Walmart, Best Buy Won’t Accept Apple Pay At Their Stores

While I think we are moving toward "chip and signature", I do think it is at least a step. Most of my cards have already been replaced with the chip variant, and at retailers that accept chip already, it will not accept the stripe when swiped. I'd imagine soon, we will be purely chip based.

As for NFC payments, I love them. Been using Google Wallet for years, and now that the mass of the general population will finally have NFC, I can see it being more widespread.

I had an iPhone 3GS and 4S, and it grew repetitive and I switched over to Android and love it. It is nice seeing Apple to have caught up, and the phone itself looks amazing and I'm trying to convince my wife to switch back so I don't have to tinker with her G3 as often.

i work at a financial institution when people lose there credit card or debit card, they don't call right away, they wait a day or two and you may not believe this some will wait a week before calling either way thats enough time for someone to run up their credit card, now it is on the person who lost it to prove they didn't purchase that crap in all honesty most people are pressed for time, they leave there wallet or phone somewhere and don't realize it for some time. and yes I have left my phone and it took 30 min for me to realize it was gone, damn nice to not hearing the dinging of emails.

What everyone's said. And you can turn off email "dinging."

Why would we want yet another company tracking all of our purchases? An ordinary credit card payment is already very un-private. Now we're supposed to let Apple know exactly how much we're spending, where, when and possibly even what we're buying?

Apple gets absolutely zero info, nor does the merchant. From their point of view you might as well have paid cash.

The credit card companies are the only entities who get the entire transaction info.

I have been saying for a couple of weeks now that if you lose your wallet with cash and drivers license in it what do you lose? if you lost your wallet with credit cards and drivers license in it what do you lose?

I think I would rather lose a wallet with my license and cash than the other.

Why? What credit card are you using that doesn't have zero fraud liability? These CC companies make so much damn money off transactions they can afford to pay for the fraudulent transactions.

I've had my CC apparently stolen/compromised 3 times in the past 7 years. Twice had fraudulent charges and never have I had to pay for it.

Walmart = corruption I got a story for you been there 18 years almost....ok enough about me
This kid I work with fell forward and to his side in the Ice cream cooler where they keep the overstock ice cream his back went out maybe for life now he's shreading paper in electronics.. He's like 23 and Walmart fucked up his back because they have so much shit in the backroom. I almost fell off a ladder there and get harasses by MGT. Every day.

Should of went to college

Fun story...the city here just replaced all their parking meters with CC swiping meters.

That do not work with the new chip CCs.

This I loose a wallet full of cash. Its gone.

I loose my credit card. I log in say I lost my card at this point. Its automatically canceled and a new one sent.

Because of the pain if that number is tied to automatic payments. The nuisance of other transactions that have been made with that number that now won't go through.

Also credit cards can be used as proof of identity to help facilitate new cards or other thingr. Cancellation information takes time to filter through reporting agencies, etc. I was shocked just a few weeks ago when my bank wanted more ID and the took my credit card. It was their card, but still if there was a lapse in my part for cancellation things could get bad

Wal-Mart actually has the Chip n Signature terminals now.
If your card has a chip on it, you now have to insert it in the hole below the keypad instead of swiping on the side. You have to keep the card in the hole until it reads, it takes about 5 seconds.
If you swipe the card that has a chip on it, it doesn't work.

I don't think the issue as to why BB and WM are going this route, which will fail yet again, has been covered. ContactC does not accept credit cards. They are trying to get rid of them because of the fees. They want direct access to your bank like Target. I have no problem with Target because they give you 5% off. WM & BB probably won't do something like that and they definitely won't be lowering their prices. Any benefits or cash back from your card provider are gone.

Apple needs to make Apple Pay available on other platforms as well to secure the market.

Does anyone even buy anything at Best Buy? I thought BB was where you go to demo products you want to buy, then order them cheaper somewhere online?

If they have a very good sale, I do. I haven't actually been in one for a couple years.... No reason to lately.

Here is the problem that I have noticed that people don't understand. American Express charges a crap load on their swipe fees, retailers accept this fact as the user of American Express will generally be well off and have a higher transaction average. If American Express users were generally not well off and a higher transaction average, then retailers would tell them to fuck off. But that is not the case, hence retailers deal with the higher swipe fee.

Now with that, a majority of people with high incomes use an iPhone. Yes Android does have some high end clients, but really not as many compared to Apple. Just watch people and what of phone they have in Beverly Hills, La Jolla, Bellevue, Del Mar, Wall Street, Mercer Island, and you will notice that a majority of them are using iPhones. These are the people that Apple Pay was made for.

If I was a retailer and I knew that I would have to pay .15% of a transaction to Apple, but they could give me a higher transaction average customer and a lower rate of fraud, I would deal with it. I might take a hit with a higher fee, but in the long run I will make more with higher transactions and less cases of fraud. On the flip side, Apple Pay will have faster transactions, which in turn will lead to more sales in a given time frame. If I can help people faster, in turn I will make more sales. A higher sales velocity if you will. Why do you think Target has metrics on how fast a cashier goes through a transaction and grades them.

Since you have a higher income source of people that use an iPhone, the higher end retailers will deal with Apple in order to gain access to these people. Wal-Mart does not cater to the kind of folks that Nordstroms or Williams Sonoma does.

Not to mention Apple Pay does remove barriers to sales, honestly the pinnacle of selling will be if a customer can go to a store, grab what they want and walk out with payment handled automatically without fraud nor needing to wait. No need to pay, see a register, or really need to talk to anyone unless you want to. Just true grab and go. Internet shopping has gotten really good at this, why do you think Amazon wants to make purchasing as simple and fast as possible?

You can see lost sales at stores easily. Just go to Wal-Mart, look at the lines and people. With decreased staffing at Wal-Mart, checkout lines are long, people get frustrated and leave. The items are generally at the spot of frustration. This is a cost to Wal-Mart twice, once on the lost sale and the second for the employee to return all of the unsold items. But in the case of Wal-Mart, short term stock value is greater for their investors than a long-term value with the use of decreased staffing. Wal-Mart has the upside in that some people will still shop there due to those being cost sensitive.

tl,dr: Apple has a high end clientele which will force retailers to accept the borg of Steve Jobs in order to make money or stay relevant.

apple pay will fail.
Apple is not a bank will never be allowed to be bank and will die by the hands of bank when they wish so.
Banks are not about to let billions walk out, they would have years ago 'if they wanted' its a billions big business that would be filled in a flash.
They are toying with these things, until the time they understand a its a $$ problem..they will probably say its creating this and that problem/ insecurity/FUD in the finance sector, and could very well have all of it regulated out of existence.

Apple, GOOGLE, MS all of them will fold at the drop of a banks hat.. business like this is nothing without banking.

You have it wrong, of course Apple is not a bank. They don't want to be a bank, they are not built to take in deposits, make loans, etc. That is what banks are for. On the flip side, banks are good at taking in deposits, making loans, keeping track of accounts, etc. What banks suck at is technology/authentication and such.

Think of Apple as an outsourcer for banks as an Authentication third party. Retailer hits Apple to prove the person whom is making the purchase s really that person and the card is valid. Apple says yep, it is valid, then goes to the bank to actually do all of the payment, debiting of accounts etc.

Almost think of Apple Pay as a DC authenticating the user, i.e. customer, from the application to another application, with Apple Pay as a Kerberos ticket.

Again, if I am bank and I don't have to pay shit for authentication and fraud is on the hands of the authenticator, fuck yeah I will take it. Less money I need to pay for authenticating/infrastructure, let a third party take over for it.

I'm sure business owners will want to pay the expense of upgrading their POS systems to start using crapple pay so hipsters can pay with their phones.

"In late 2015, American merchants will have to buy new terminals that support EMV cards, which are more secure..."

Perfect time to upgrade and include Apple Pay.

But I am sure you just wanted to rant with your little immature response.

Ugh why. NFC is the best way to pay, not some shit method those chains are gonna think up.

They are going with CurrentC, which uses QR codes that current checkout scanners can read, can be used with any smart phone and can only be tied to checking or savings accounts, so the retailer pays zero fees. Walmart has been trying to get the industry to lower their fees for years, even going to the point of forcing users to use their debit cards as debit, so of course they are going to go with the format where there's no fees.

A payment method that pulls straight out of your bank account? I will never use that shit.

How does that= corruption? Hell I worked at my old job for 14 years injured my shoulder, tore a muscle in my leg and then slipped on ice and blew out the discs in my back from l2-s1. It's been a year and a half so far is fighting with workers comp and I don't consider that corrupt. At least they have him working as soon as I got my MRI results back my work told me to go home and not come back.

It doesn't, in some peoples eyes any work injury is that works fault and they are somehow entitled to a handout of millions. All his story sounded like to me was some kid did something stupid and got hurt.

I get printer ink from there if I'm in a pinch and look through the DVD bins.
Occasionally I find a great deal on a boxed PC game there.
