I know, I know, Activision is reporting shipped units, not the number of units that actually sold, but these are the only numbers available so far. That said, are any of you playing Destiny?

Activision announced this morning it has shipped over $500 million worth of MMO-shooter Destiny into "retail stores and first parties worldwide" as of day one. The number is a little messy to extrapolate because it mushes up the "shipped" dollar figure we try to avoid reporting when possible, with the nutritious digitally distributed "sold" number.

It looks like an interesting game but unless they port it over to PC I wont be playing it. I have watch some streamers playing it and watching they try and aim on a console is painful to watch.

Playing it on Xbox One. It's essentially Bungie's version of Borderlands. No real amazing new concepts. Plays like Halo Reach but with different weapons for the most part. This is the most use my Xbox One has gotten from an actual game, though, and the first time I've turned it on since hockey season ended so I guess that's something.

Honestly I'm having a really good time with it. It's got that classic Bungie game feel.

TBH i didnt hear about Destiny until a couple days ago when they launched a live action game trailer. That trailer at first appeared to me as new movie trailer. However after looking at the gameplay etc I`m definitely hooked. However I do resonate with the idea of a pc port.

I was all set to buy Destiny till I played Warframe on the XB1. Framerate issues aside, I am so addicted I canceled my Destiny pre-order. I'll wit till Destiny goes on sale somewhere. I want to make sure the Hype is real.

It's funny how they use the dollar figure instead of actual volume shipped.

Keep in mind this is on a global scale. Using US dollars and assuming shipments are divided into 75% standard, 20% limited edition, and 5% ghost edition, we're looking at:

5,172,413 Standard units shipped, amounting to $310,344,827
1,379,310 Limited units shipped, amounting to $137,931,031
344,827 Ghost units shipped, amounting to $51,724,137
≈
6,896,550 Total units shipped worldwide

I don't see anything unusual or outstanding about that.

Just in case someone inevitably says my numbers don't add up, here are the exact numbers rounded to 2 decimals...

Code:
DOLLARS UNITS
 51724137.93 344827.59
137931031.48 1379310.32
310344827.59 5172413.79

It's extremely painful to watch me play console games, because I'm used to playing FPS's on the PC. My kids are used to them on the console. So, they are damn good compared to me. It's not painful to watch (unless you count my dignity as a gamer...). Just really depends on your background and experience I think.

Destiny is a great game from what I experienced with the beta. I am waiting a few weeks or so before I buy it, though. I will be buying it, but I'm waiting out the initial rush.

Second $ amount is supposed to be 137,931,034.48... Damn it, no edit button .

I agree.. I am fluent in both PC and Xbox controller. You can be great in consoles.. although perhaps mouse is more precise, but the fact that everyone is on the same hardware also adds to the competition factor for me. It's not just a matter of whose daddy loves them more :)

It's essentially Bungie's version of Borderlands.

I just started playing BL2 (never really played BL) and I wondered immediately if the stuff I had been seeing in Destiny videos was basically the same game. I guess it doesn't surprise me, BL2 has been a lot of fun for the first couple hours I've played.

Bought the destiny ghost edition. The actual ghost figurine talks and lights up. Charges via usb mini port. I really like it a ton.

The game? I'm enjoying it so far. I am seeing my friends hit 20 on day two which bugs me, but apparently getting to 20 is just starting the game. Getting out of tutorial. The hard sections are still ahead. The actual campaign is short and that bothers me for some reason.

MP portion is solid except for one major gripe. Sometimes the Matchmaking decides to have a 6x4 or 6x5 which is complete bs.Moral of the story there is don't go in solo or you will end up on the 4 side and not the 6 side.

I played the pants off the Destiny beta, and picked it up at the midnight launch. This may be the only physical game I buy for my Xbox One, as I plan on selling/giving it away as soon as the PC version is confirmed. Until then, I plan on getting a Xim4 to use a keyboard/mouse with the console (even if the pc version is announced soon, the adapter will be great for the Halo franchise as well)

I think it's closer to Guild Wars than Borderlands. Doesn't feel like Borderlands at all too me. I'm loving it so far.

Shame on you for letting your kids use a console :p

Then why is the article even making this a story? Sounds more like they're a shill for Activision rather than just reporting on the "news" of what's happening.

A game finally shipped to stores, there's you're story, it's fairly obviously that Activision sent out the numbers to make it sound like a huge deal. Otherwise why not wait until you actually get the first weekend/week sales numbers and report on that.

There's a saying in statistics: "Beware of big round numbers"

The irony to this "ships $500M" is they were afraid of early reviews and didn't want any published.

Something tells me this will be another game that plays out like Titanfall did where its saccharin-sweet and instantly accessible in the beginning, then slowly fizzles when people realize its not exactly a deep game.

I ended up ordering a Xim4 myself, looked really cool based on the video reviews I saw.

Makes sense, because they spent $500 million to make it, so they're going to try to sell more than $500 million worth of product.

$500m worth of suckers chewing up data caps. Well for those of us that have them. Yes I'm bitter.

I got my fill during the beta. Felt like Borderlands with some MMO elements. There's fun to be had there, but it's not for me. A friend has it on Xbone, I might check it out on there, and at least get farther than where the beta stopped. Might give me a better feel for the game. Overall though, I'm not too interested.

Shame on you for letting your kids use a console :p

They just recently got decent video cards. They play Total War series, Skyrim and things like that on the PC. Not really the FPS's.

But, like me - they play games. PC is obviously superior. But, consoles have their place. Who doesn't like firing up a SNES and playing a game of Castlevania 4? :)

Oh I understand some people can play FPS's just fine on consoles but I'm like you and I'm used to playing them on PC. I wouldnt say im terrible playing on a console but it does get frustrating and I know it would be much more enjoyable on a PC at least for me.

Not buying another PC to play one game.

Congrats. You are the 39,054,873,250,967 person to make this statement.

Still means nothing to the fact that most people playing this game are having a positive experience and not being on PC means dick.

I am sure you feel good after posting about it though.

... and not being on PC means dick.

Actually it doesn't. It's another platform with plenty of people on it that would have been happy to buy it.

Shunning the PC makes no sense from a business point of view.

Why on earth do you think you have the chops to say what does and does not make sense from a business point of view. It's not like releasing on the PC is a zero dollar investment with zero risks.

They just slapped this thing together with a bunch of Hookers and Prostitutes.

Played the Beta. Was interesting, but not interesting enough to buy it when I can't get it on PC. I HATE aiming with a controller and quite frankly I didn't think the graphics were super awesome. When it's out on PC I'll check it out again.

Would probably have bought this if it was available on PC as it piqued my interest enough during what I saw of the beta. I don't own any consoles though and even if I did, I suck badly enough at console controls to make it not worth it.

Don't own a console yet but I've checked gameplay on twitch during the beta, both times fell asleep on it Lolllllllllll tell you much.. I mean i watched the whole gameplay of last of us and still want to play it myself one day

If Activision made enough money we will see Destiny 2.
