Apple Event Liveblog

How many merchants can handle these NFC transactions. Jumping between payment methods will be annoying to most people. At frequented locations, not so much a problem. But you're making apple users think. That's problem since they want things to work without thinking about it.

Just about every fast service has a NFC capable payment method, and it really is "with out thinking" as all you have to do is touch the device to the picture with the bars.

Quite a few diners, retail stores, gas stations and fast food type joints around me all have the option to use NFC. My guess is that you'll likely see more jump on board if this is successful for Apple.

This wont be a replacement for your CC for quite a few years to come, but it's certainly a safer alternative for the places that do offer it. IIRC, from the keynote, you can also use this for online purchases (Apple will still generate you a 1 time CC number for the transaction) which is really nice too

Wonder what Paypal is thinking? lol

Who knows... maybe they'll jump onboard as a partner

WiFi calling will be available on the 6 and 6 Plus.

Wow, WiFi calling, just like on my 2 year old S3 (on T-Mobile), or the Blackberry 8900 I had 5 years ago.

Simply amazing that Apple invented this.....

Time to stop calling Casio's and Seiko's good watches?

While I hate the apple watch I don't remember the last time I spent less than $400 on a good watch.

And I can remember ever spending more than $40 on a watch....

I guess we differ on what is meant by a "good" watch.
To me a good watch tells me the time, has a battery that lasts for more than 2 years, and doesn't break when it get bumped against a wall, or soaked by water.

Anyone else find it odd they've mentioned that "you can send someone your heartbeat!" thing, like, three times, now?

WTF? Why would you ever want to do that??
I'd like to monitor my relatives and children...also, anyone with a heart condition would likely want to have this information on tap to send out to a loved one

then there are fun uses, like working out with your partner bragging about how high you've gotten your heart rate up. romantic pulses at night or loving e-notes

every keynote apple becomes more and more insulting with regard to these things. If they keep this up, one can only hope that the "journalists" one day muster up enough integrity when they do their pieces or reviews.

I think we have to start calling these things mini tablets instead of phone. I will never understand why people need phones that are so large you have to have a purse of special holder to carry the things around. I have a Nokia Lumina 520 with a four inch screen and that was the smallest I could really find (of decently reviewed phones).

I haven't had a watch for about ten year and will likely never get another one. If I need a Fitness "watch" I will get a Garmin.

I think 4.5 to 5.5 inches is the sweet spot for a phone so I think Apple got it right for the iPhone 6 sizes. At 7 to 8 inches, a tablet is considerably bigger a much easier to use for web browsing. 6" phones to me are too big for a phone and still too small for a tablet.

sell one of them and buy yourself a thesaurus and a dictionary so you can learn to differentiate between invention and implementation

Well, the thing is...what do you use your smartphone for at the moment? Generally, a handful of things:

1) Non-phone stuff, like poking around in some silly time-waster game while sitting on a bus, or reading Facebook posts or Tweets, maybe reading some news articles, etc...for all these users, a bigger interface is better.

2) Quickly pulling it out to check the time...only, you aren't doing that anymore, because iWatch! So the phone screen size doesn't matter.

3) Taking or making phone calls...only, you haven't been holding the phone up to your head to do that in SOME VERY LONG TIME, in favor of the vastly better sound and reception quality of the headsets smartphones come with. So the phone screen size doesn't matter.

4) Checking notifications for upcoming meetings/text messages/etc...only, you aren't doing that anymore, because iWatch! So the phone screen size doesn't matter.

Generally, I would agree with you that the crazy-large phones were getting annoying, but only because that point #1 and #4 remained major use cases of the device, and they wanted something sized to easily pull in an out of pockets over and over...IE., smaller. With the new watch-thing taking over those roles, and doing them better...what's left for the phone to be EXCEPT a mini-tablet?

I'm 5'11, 165 lbs, my 6" Lumia 1520 fits in my front pocket just fine. With a case, no less.

This event was a great For Apple as a corporation and it's movement away from the Jobs way of design.
However personally I'm not Impressed with the marketing gimmicks apples got to compete with the gimmicks Sammy or other droid mfgs have.

Sammy note 4
Q-Hd
3gb of ram
5.7" screen
550ppi
True multitasking

6plus
Only hd
Only 1 gb ram
Only 5.5"
Only 401 ppi

Iwatch is the star of the show

The phone is ugly. It has same camera . It is ugly in both the medium huge and childish huge sizes. It has a slightly faster processor without needing one. Watch isn't bad if you are really bored with life. It should have been square not curved. Steve jobs is dead obviously. 100 for every bump in storage that costs one dollar to manufacture. Gorilla glass. Hm.

It can help you waste your money faster by buying useless shit at chain stores.

The phone offers no advantages in communication aside from bumped up front camera and wifi enhanced phone calls. If I'm on wifi I am home. My calls are clear at home, they suck in the street or in a car or via compressed audio on Bluetooth. Watch is only interesting minor but pretty innovation . People really have no idea what their money could buy, do they?

I never bought an apple product before. I waited for the 6. Why....... It is so nothing. It needed some amazing technology and a big upgrade in f stop for the camera. It is a big 5s with minor upgrades. I'm shocked. 800 dollars or higher for something that can't fit in my pocket without looking like an idiot. I will be buying an iPhone 5s actually. Last tiny fast phone with good camera and sim card and good looks.

If the battery life was good, they would have mentioned it.

I found that really conspicuous as well, the lack of mention of battery life on the iWatch.

My god, though. Look at that thing. The full body curved stainless steal (or faux gold) looks taaaaaaaaaaaaacky.

Honestly Apple needed to hit this out of the park and they didn't. the iWatch priced at 349 is just ridiculous. I haven't paid that much for my last G-shock watch that I love to death and has been many places with me.

Whatever you think about Apple, this is still pretty funny.

It looks like a good set of products.

Apple will sell millions and millions and millions and millions of phones.
watches..who knows.

jesus christ, that event reminded me why i dislike apple as company, no matter how good their products may be. that was the most self-indulgent, pretentious thing i've seen all month.

"we revolutionize this and that. again."

"we invented this groundbreaking thing!"

"share your heartbeat!" (seriously...what the actual fuck?)

and a smartwatch (with a gold version that's, of course, called "apple edition", so it becomes the Apple Watch Apple Edition) that will literally show you that you are the center of our solar system, you hipster asshole.

/rant

sorry. battery life on the new iphones is pretty nice though.

So does this NFC buzz mean that whatever Android invents in their devices, is just really a shiny tool with no value until Apple comes and does the same thing and actually makes it something users want. Interesting

lol 'Android' didn't invent NFC

The buzz isn't that they're using NFC, but how they're using it. It's a much better/safer (and user friendly) implementation than previous digital wallets and goes beyond NFC point of sales. It can be used for online transactions as well

I'm usually against the ignorant Apple bashing on this site, but why on earth would one want an Apple watch? Even the name sucks.Apple Watch Apple Edition? Seriously? Then again, I don't see a reason to own any of the new smart watches. They all seem pointless.

Good god the butthurt is strong on here.

What apple is doing has SHIT to do with NFC technology. It is the entire payment system and implementation PLUS the fact that they have the carriers on board.

No one has been able to get wide adoption because everyone wants their own thing. Apple has the brute force and market share to make it happen.

This was the biggest announcement of the day.

Yup, the payment thing was pretty huge and honestly exciting to hear about. It's not a new idea to use your phone for transactions, but it looks like Apple is in a position to take a leading role in the adoption of that kinda stuff in the US.

Does Apple Pay mean I'm screwed if I don't have an Apple phone, or is it going to ignite the whole NFC payment thing so we'll inevitably get something similar for Android in the near future?

Personally I think it will ignite it but it will have to be led by GOOGLE and not the carriers. The biggest drawback to doing something like this is that Google gives too much control to carriers which fragments the market share because they all want their own deal.

Google will have to start taking back some control and develop this at the OS level. Then they will have the numbers to get the carriers on board to pay them a fee per transaction.

Unless that happens I think Android will be screwed in this arena.

Well I understand that NFC has tons of applications, but the main profitable one is payment tech via NFC. Basically from what I have seen is that retailers make the push to add Google Wallet, but I didn`t see many users adopt the technology (by adopt I mean not only buy a phone with the required NFC tech but also use it on a day 2 day basis). Hopefully this allows this payment system a bigger market share then when launched by others.

Except not all of us care about that stuff. I, for one, am dreading the bigger screen. The only thing I'd really care about are the battery stats. Everything else isn't really a big deal.

lol, 3rd party keyboards? wtf do you want those for? to make txting ur bff esir?

Not to mention that the particular phone in that graphic was a piece of garbage with piss poor battery performance and a laundry list of performance issues.

But emmeerrgawd the bigger wifis and faster GBs.

Exactly. 5 cousins with iPhones and all I hear is...
"Android screens are just too big and the phone won't fit in my hand," until they're on an Apple phone then its "Man I'm looking forward to a bigger screen!"
"4g LTE is worthless, 3g is plenty fast" until Apple added it in, then "This iPhone REALLY smokes your Android on downloads!"
Nothing is "revolutionary" until Apple does it, before that it a " useless gimmick."

maybe if you quit harassing people about their phones then you won't have to hear with whatever excuses they feel they have to come up with to shut you up...most people don't give a fig about arguing over the phone they bought.

After watching conversations develop I'm now looking forward to Apple pay taking off. It is going to be entertaining as hell watching all these morons lose their ass due to the security problems that are known about. I expect people on this forum of all places would know better, but I forget that most people have zero long term memory.

I don't.
All I hear is Apple this and Apple that, I swear its like a damn cult.
Seriously, one cousin just switched days before the 6 was announced citing his Android was just too big and he preferred the smaller screen because it fit in his hand better, yesterday and all I hear is "Oh my god, I just can't wait to get that bigger screen!"
Its to the point I don't even buy apples at the grocery store or harvest the apples off of the trees in the back yard.
