ASUS Announces ROG SWIFT PG278Q Premium Gaming Monitor

Anyone with this monitor also own a Shield? I just wanna make sure that game streaming works fine when GSync is set to override in-game settings. Found out the hard way that 21:9 monitors don't like game streaming, so I'm skeptical about anything operating beyond the standard 16:9@60Hz...

I just got three of these guys from Amazon. I'm in the middle of trying to get my triple SLI to work with my Titans. Once I figure it out, I'll post a review of these monitors and the frame rates I get with some of the more current games. I'm hoping my Titans will work with 3D surround with most of the eye-candy on...but I'll have to wait and see.

That's a pretty awesome setup, but you don't need me to tell you that. I can't imagine the blur-free surround goodness that you'd get with that.

Nice, but keep in mind that the driver used in the PCPER review (Nvidia Surround w/ GSYNC & SLI) hasn't been released yet. I've been thinking of also picking up 3 Swifts but I'd like to set them all up in portrait mode. If you're board feel free to try it out and report back. A lot of people are telling me that the viewing angle will kill my idea but I'd like to hear from someone who actually has the displays. ;)

I got mine yesterday, but the screen door effect is really bugging me. Coming from a glossy screen to this is a huge change for me. Any way to overcome this or is this monitor just not for me?

This is also the first time using a non glossy monitor too and I can say after two weeks I've gotten use to it.

what gpu's everyone running? got a pair of gtx770 2gb and worried it might not be enough.

I see some folks post here with sli 680's, while others are worried if their sli 780's are enough. I play mostly dota2 and cs:go, but would like to option to get new games without having to play them at the lowest settings.

It depends on your goals. If you want 120+ fps in new games then probably nothing short of a quad Titan setup is good enough.

I also have 2x GTX770 and feel that everything runs rather nicely with this display. It remains to be seen if the 2GB VRAM will be a severe limitation in the future.

Anyone get any Flicker while playing a game, I just noticed it on Titanfall, Gsync enabled and no overclock. It does it with 1/2/3 cards enabled. Doesn't seem to matter if its 60Hz, 120Hz, or 144Hz.

Yeah there is some slight flicker when FPS dips or on loading screens, main menu's etc with GSync enabled. Its a common thing with this monitor. May be fixed in a future driver or it may not. If your monitor works OK don't worry about it.

On a side note I just tried this out. I haven't even tried ULMB till now.

Yeah, I don't think any of my text is blurry with ULMB with this panel. Could you take a screenshot? Mine looks pretty normal to me. It's about as sharp as normal I think. I tried cycling between the other refresh rates with the turbo button real quick and didn't notice any difference with the text. What's your pulse width?

Also is it possible to use ULMB at 144Hz? Mine only allows me to enable it at 120Hz. As soon as I go to 144Hz it automatically turns it off.

For some reason ULMB kind of seems to make my eyes more tired anyway though. Doesn't it use some kind of strobing effect or some crap?

I took some pics but I can't seem to capture it. Its only very slight and effects certain text. It kind of adds like an extra faint outline to the text. I only noticed it because I was looking for blurry text from the posts I read about the issue you had with your first monitor lol.

Ok well you are right a couple games it does it in loading, But I just loaded up these games with Zero Problems, Tomb Raider, Crysis 3, Guild Wars 2, Street Fighter, Star Citizen, Sleeping Dogs, Farcry3 and Marvel Heroes 2015! So its only Titanfall I notice in game on a Darker level. Maybe ill try some different settings. I can tell you this , I have Almost Zero backlight bleed and Zero dead Pixels so Its a keeper. I did so something I have never done in my 40 years on the face of the planet, I bought a 3 year extended warrenty at Microcenter for $89 on this thing. I love the idea of a swap out in store and if god forbids this things craps out in 2 years I get a new moniter ( most likely a nice upgrade by then ) or the equivalent purchase price towards a new one.

I'd be happy with a single pg278q at 16:9, (though a 21:9 version would be nice someday if someone ever made a comparable one).
Nvidia doesn't scale very well past two cards and you pretty much need nvidia for g-sync and ulmb modes. Trying to maintain 100fps average is tough enough at 2560x1440 on ultra imo as it is, which would require me to get a second 780ti. TN shift/"shadow" gets so bad in portrait mode on many monitors that it becomes like a solarization effect, and this monitor is reportedly as bad or worse than some in that regard. Personally I also can't stand bezels being so central in a PPP setup. LLL (landscape triple monitor surround) at least could keep a 16:9 as your main viewport with the side panels used for immersion, but the fps hit is massive in either case especially on 2560x screens.
Then you have to consider compatibility, bugs with g-sync, displayport and such in those setups. Not even worth considering for me.

I'm looking forward to the oculus rift eventually for more of a VR "surround" experience though. Even if the first iterations are 1080p with large pixels vs perceived "screen" distance, the overall mocap + VR experience should trump that. Whenever the 90hz+ with blur reduction oled consumer release models come out I'll be buying one.

Hey guys. I have a similar issue to others had with my new PG278Q. I lose the option to use ULMB and G-SYNC. I don't know for sure because it only happens after work, as I only have about 10 hours on this monitor. It doesn't do it when the monitor goes to sleep (I just tested it). Although it may be after extended hours of sleep. My PC doesn't hibernate.

Issue is 'resolved' by disconnecting displayport and reconnecting. Using stock DP cable.

I know this issue is brought up in conjunction with other issues, but not by itself. I need to find a forum with a subforum just for this monitor. Too many subjects in this thread.

I have played CIV 5 and Battlefield 4 with no issues using a Evga 780 FTW Dual. Haven't found any dead pixels, and Im not looking. I think that is the equivalent of searching your brand new car on the showroom floor with a magnifying glass, but I am old. I would probably do it if the monitor took a significant portion of my wage and I had nothing better to do. Kudos to the guys who do go the extra mile.

By the way; first time poster, long time listener. Been reading the site and the forum since '98/99. Bought my first graphics card, a Diamond 770 from the this review (and other sites, most of which are long gone) http://hardocp.com/article/1999/07/29/v770_tnt2_ultra_review/#.VAxiAYPF_D4

Well the moniter worked last night , now this morning after coming home from eating breakfast everytime I try to at any game ( was all working ) I'm getting the out of range bug. I tried to unplug the cable ( the display port cable provided from Asus ) that didn't work, I just re installed the drivers and that didn't work. No games work with Gsync enabled and I cannot even access my OSD it's locked, and one other question ULMB has been Greyed out since I first turned it on yesterday ( I couldn't select it ) is there a trick to get that to work instead of Gysnc? Oh lord this thing might be getting returned by the end if the week.

Can you clarify what the flicker looks like? I noticed that in some games the brightness would pulsate every 5-10 seconds or so. Meaning... The brightness would all of a sudden jump up then back to normal within a split second. It may or may not have been accompanied with a stutter. For example, The Walking Dead credits scene (which is 2d) would have a slight stutter every so often and it seems that the brightness would pulsate at the same time. It didn't do it in game though. Only the credits and maybe the menu screen.

Next I tried Gunslinger. The pulsating actually happened in game for that one.

I tried a couple of other games which didn't have the same pulsating.

So I guess it's just a G-SYNC artifact? I hope that can be fixed because it's really annoying. And I hate to keep dropping the "it's an $800 monitor", but it's an $800 monitor. It shouldn't have any problems.

Would a single 780Ti be enough for this?

From my experience it's plenty fine. I don't know how demanding BF4 is over Bf3 but I easily can abuse ULMB to the fullest extent, and make kids cry hacks all day long. No issues in any other game but I do find myself using ULMB far more compared to GSYNC.
Are there any services that remove the anti-glare from the monitor?
Well, I know Vega did some work like that on the VG248qe. Not sure when he gets back though, or if he would even risk a monitor like this considering it's the price of a VG248QE surround setup. I almost paid him to do the Surround setup I had with VG248QE's but luckily Nvidia screwed the drivers up for Lightboost so I ended up selling 2 out of the 3 monitors to friends.

Wise choice. I'd have done the same if I had the option.

I got the out of range bug as well, and a reboot fixed it... for now.

Yes the flicker is just like you described. Its not too intrusive mid game only on loading screens and if the FPS takes a sudden dip with a split second freeze/stutter.

do you have the 2gb sli 770s as well?

do you have the 2gb sli 770s as well?

Yup, two ASUS GTX 770 OC 2 GB cards in SLI. The only thing that truly seems to trounce the shit out of these right now is GTA IV with the Icehancer mod but then again I would not hold that as a great example since it is very much a hack.

Personally I don't use antialiasing (fine with FXAA/SMAA etc) that much so I'm getting away with less VRAM usage.

Just had the out of range bug for the first time. GSync then vanished from control panel.

Closed game using console and exit command. Unplugged displayport cable, plugged back in and all was well.

my samsung A750D 120hz 1080p 27" screen gets out of range on wakeup and used to rarely blink during usage. I'm on a long 25'+ heavy gauge (24awg) extension cable though. When I switched to nvidia card, it became pretty much unusable on extension because the signal strength on dp was so weak that the monitor would drop out a lot.

I kept a 1' "dongle" displayport cable connected to the extension right on top of my desk next to the monitor base, so that any time the signal would drop out or blink - I could unsnap the connector and reconnect it. Pita but it worked. Other than the bandwidth I am not a fan of displayport tech/connectors/signals at all. I could run hdmi/dvi for 50' easily to my tv, 25' to my pc no problems. Displayport is a weak signal, even weaker than usb.

I would just like to take the time and thank all of the un-official beta testers who are working very hard at making sure this display has all of the bugs worked out of it by the time I buy :D

I would particularly like to give a shout out to all those special AMD people that took up spots in the line for us Nvidia fanbois....thus allowing us to dodge the dreaded beta tester bullet ;)

Anyway, when are these gonna be in stock again :p

well, i got to say this thing is nice.
a bit over priced , but does work well , mine has 0 problems so far .
did have an issue with ULMB not working in games , but it was my own fault for not removing the light boost i had in for my other monitors.
and yes , KDR is going up :)

Just played 10 levels of the middle of Metro LL. I was worried my evga 780 FTW wouldn't be able to get decent frame rate @ 1440 in this game. I have all video options all the way up, except 0 SSAA. I am averaging 60-85fps. With G-Sync its very smooth with stutter once per level or so; not during action... seemingly random. The monitor is working very well for the reason I purchased it (G-Sync). I had a ton of tearing in this game previously.

I really wanted it because of BF4 though to get rid of the blur and raise my KDR. Haven't played that though.

Edit for honesty: I have just recently observed some framerate dips to 45 on the later levels of Metro: LL down to 45, which is noticable, but not that bad. Game still runs smoothly.
Also I can alt-tab out of a game without causing issues to Frequency, G-Sync or ULMB.

Also edit for specs:
i7-2600K @ 4.8GHZ on p67 /16GB Memory @ 1600mhz. Intel 530 256GB SSD.

Edit again: During the Metro: LL church level framerate drops to 35 which start a little stutter; nothing like before this monitor though.

How many of you purchased an extended warranty plan from your store of choice? After the catastrophic failure that happened to my last one, I'm actually considering returning this one, too.

For one it isn't perfect (or very close to it) anyway...
Two if things go wrong, I'm, what... gonna have RMA to ASUS (which has one of the most notoriously bad RMA services of any tech company in existence)? And probably pay for the shipping? That's not a very attractive prospect.

I might just get rid of it and wait for an iteration that has fewer problems (if it ever comes out).

Also after the catastrophic failure that my last one had in conjunction with the backlight blinking in every game regardless of FPS (or some of the crap in my screenshot), I'd suggest if anyone has some similar issue you should just go ahead and return it. None of it is normal. I'm not sure about loading screens and such but... if it starts happening regularly during games, it's probably not a good thing.

Didn't the box say 3yr Asus warranty on it?

The A750D needed a display port cable with pin 20 disabled to fix that random no siginal problem.

I would return it on the basis of the backlight alone. Would not stand for any of that shit personally.

I ended up with a good one, no dead pixels and uniform backlight. To be honest I have had a lot of success with ASUS products (motherboards, soundcards and monitors) and they have all been of high quality, reliable and performed well. However the number of reports about monitors having QC issues does worry me though. My main concern is will this thing last? Only time will tell.

There seems to be quite a lot of happy Swift owners in the UK and Europe though, it should not make any difference where the unit is sold but I wonder if they rushed a lot through to the states to meet demand... Take it with a pinch of salt.

It is a delightful monitor but in any case if mine starts to misbehave then I plan to re-purchase the BenQ XL2720Z and fall back on that. Only 1080p but a solid monitor.
