If you pay any attention to Facebook, then your page likely was inundated with mass hysteria regarding Facebook Messenger's rather wide permissions requirement. FB dev Peter Martinazzi tries to set the record straight on a special page in FB and even includes some external sources to back his statements.

Like most other apps, we request permission to run certain features, such as making calls and sending photos, videos or voice messages. If you want to send a selfie to a friend, the app needs permission to turn on your phone's camera and capture that photo. We don't turn on your camera or microphone when you aren't using the app.

Im sure another "experiment" is already in the works lol
FB can do it once, they can do it again.

If they wanted to put an end to this nonsense, they should have addressed it sooner. By now it's already gospel in the public's eyes...and as we all know, the public is stupid and believes everything on the internet.

FB has a messenger app? I'm on FB for keeping up with various friends I have throughout the world, but I don't have the app...or the messenger app. Did it previously access peoples mics and cameras?

Facebook has eroded whatever benefit of the doubt I've had for them long ago. It's unfortunate that they can obtain my data from my friends and family members...

messenger wise, I am wary of this sort of damage control.

I think the best part in this thread is how some posters think they even have any privacy. :D

What's worse if no one brings up the topic of privacy anymore because "it doesn't matter anymore, we have none". When that happens, "no privacy" will take an new and even darker meaning.

The funniest thing is people using the regular facebook app believing the fear mongering-ass articles that first "reported" this "issue". Why? Because the facebook app they are using to complain about the additional facebook messenger app has ~90% of the same permissions. But then again, that's none of my business.... Where's my tea?

Benign or not, I don't want to install another app just to get a private message. It's inconvenient. All they've managed to do is move me back to the mobile website. I don't want another chat app, another sms like app or anything else. AFAIC, the primary advantage of FB is the ability to do everything from one place. Take that away, and I might as well go back to email.

why are you calling it facebook still?

Facebook is now known as "ALS ice bucket challenge-book"

Android upped the security settings on apps, and now apps have to spell out a lot more what they need access at...
