New 3DS and 3DS XL handhelds were announced by Nintendo on Friday. More than just a simple refresh, they have larger screens, more buttons, better battery life, and NFC tech built-in. Alas, it appears they won't hit US shores this year.

The new models launch in Japan on October 11, with the new 3DS priced 16,000 yen (around $154) and the new 3DS XL 18,800 yen ($181). The new 3DS XL will be available in Metallic Blue and Metallic Black, and the new 3DS in White and Black. A Nintendo press release notes: "As for the overseas markets, our local subsidiaries will separately confirm. However, there will be no U.S. and European launches this calendar year."

Handhelds are useless now. Just use your phone or buy a Shield instead.

Their game library is still way better than mobile gaming platform though, which is filled with P2W stuff.

I wonder if they upped the resolution to go along w/ the increase in screen size for both models.

The new 3DS is not backwards compatible with older 3DS models. Have fun with that.

Ugh , here goes more money soon into a pit! Il be buying it if it ever does hit NA. Love Nintendo and there games. Even with PS4 And Xbox1 they have nothing on the games Nintendo has . It really isn't all about how shiny or sharp the picture is but how fun the game is. And not to mention i share it with my family/kids and Nintendo has alot of family entertainment . FUNZIES!

The fragmentation of the userbase annoy me. But a new model is still interesting.

These incremental updates that create comparability issues are annoying, for a company who's demographic will have trouble distinguish what the "new" and "old" 3DS's are. Just make a new handheld and name it something else.

Regardless, the new buttons and hardware look interesting.

Perhaps because my kids are getting older, their interest in ANYTHING Nintendo has really waned the past couple of years.

I really respect nintendo's first party software, as being really clean and still fun.

it's a shame they dont sell on other platforms. seems like cellphones have replaced or soon will replace handheld's for most kids in america.

The 3DS destroys any type of gaming you can do on a smartphone or tablet alone. There is still a huge market for handhelds.

You right, all the old 3DS can go F*CK themselves!

Are you serious. Since when can an OLD console play games from a NEW console? Like what would be the point in upgrading to the new console if your old one can still play the game games?

You're an idiot. That's the norm for practically every hardware released since the beginning of time. I bet you're mad your Gameboy wont play Gameboy Advanced games, too?

Case in point, Final Fantasy, on handhelds they have lovely RPGs, some SRPGs, etc, on mobile devices they have "lets tap the screen as fast as you can, btw if you want to unlock characters that's 99 cents, oh you died ... so you want play some more? Pay us money". Equally sad that Capcom isn't doing any more Marvel fighting games, mobiles have a horrendous looking POS that will probably cost money to play each character.

My XPeria Play begs to differ. Emulation from Atari through to PSX. No need to jailbreak or use proprietary loader cards. Plenty of Android games still run great on it and more companies (notably Sega and Square) are porting their titles to Android.

Nintendo, like Apple, is a closed ecosystem... and suffers as a result.

On one hand, you DO have those F2P IAP based games. Many are terrible.

On the other hand, you can't play a game on the N3DS that you've purchased before unless you want to buy it again through that console's market... IF Nintendo decided to make it available for that generation.

Moneygrubbing both ways.

Not the same.

When you have 3DS re-releases (like the XL etc) coming out less than a few years later than the original...

It's not a new handheld, it's like an Xbox One.5

Kind of like the Wii U you mean?

Maybe he should have said "handhelds destroy mobile when it comes to legally playing games?"

I do hope you're not trying high and mighty about this since you were posting in the thread about turning the Raspberry Pi into an arcade machine.

This. If you want to play a game there is no comparison. Tablet/phone games are in a different league from real PC/video games. Saying tablet/phone games are in the same category is like saying someone is a Formula One racer because they speed 10 MPH over the speed limit on a highway in their Toyota Corolla.

I think you're the idiot here. ;) Are you saying the various Xbox 360s and PS3s (there were three of each) should not have been backwards compatible with the launch titles/mid life titles?

The New 3DS is a 3DS variant; it is not a new console like the Game Boy Color to Game Boy Advanced was. It is like the Game Boy Advanced to Game Boy Advanced SP, or PS2 to PS2 Slim, ect.

Actually, its clearly a new console with backwards compatibility when you consider that Xenoblade Chronicles will only work on the new model. This is extremely similar to the Gameboy to Gameboy Color transition. Most titles worked on both devices yet a select few opted to be Gameboy Color only. It isn't like Advance to Advance SP or PS2 to PS2 Slim because both of those had identical game libraries - the 3DS and New 3DS do not.

The statement wouldn't be that hilarious if the mobile phones had more than a handful of interesting games that are not emulated/ported. Even with the ported games, touch based control is often cluncky and terrible and very few publishers have sufficient reason to make games exclusive to Shield or phones. Nintendo may have an archaic ideology on how to do things, but they also have some of the most creative minds evidenced by how well they are able evolve game frachises over the years.

Xenoblade port to 3ds i wonder what that says about the original Wii. Shame more story driven wii games weren't brought over to NA and EU till way too late in it's life cycle. Still bought Xenoblade, The Last Story and Pandoria's Tower.

phone is no good as touch screen controls are yuck,

I brought a gamepad for my phone but then found out it only works on very few games so was overhyped.

Plus the 3DS has a proper games library vs the junk on phones.

Is a shame the ton of good 3DS games cant be played on something like the wii-u as I hate portable gaming.

an example is final fantasy crisis core, excellent game, excellent story. Handheld only, I played on my pc via emulation but it never got released to a big screen console. It also never has been released on PSN so cannot be played on the vita either.

The original 3DS was released 3 years ago. For comparison the DS was released in 2004 and lasted until 2011, when the 3DS was released.
