Valve Supports In-Home Streaming on Latest GeForce Cards

Valve and NVIDIA have just made game streaming better than ever. Last week, Valve officially released support for hardware encoding on NVIDIA GeForce GPUs in the Steam client. Pair this support with one of our latest GeForce GTX GPUs and you can play remotely from your PC connected to any Steam-enabled system in your home at resolutions up to 1080p at 60 fps. “We’ve worked closely with NVIDIA to support hardware encoding on GeForce cards with our Steam In-Home Streaming technology, and the result is nothing short of amazing,” said Sam Lantinga, at Valve.
 
Nice. This is basically want I wanted from nVidia' SHIELD stuff all along - the ability to play on my desktop, anywhere in the house.

This wasn't the case with their in home streaming before?
 
hmmm, time to bring out my old Nvidia Ion based net-top based box and see if streaming to it from my Titan has improved.
 
Is this so one could enrich his toilet experience or is there a reason not to walk to the desktop itself?
 
I'm behind on this technology....does this mean I can stream games to my 8.1 tablet from my SLI gaming rig, or to my old dual core machine I keep in the garage?
 
Could I setup an Intel NUC and stream from my 780? This would really be cool for gaming in the living room.
 
This is very interesting to me. What sort of input lag does it add I wonder. I'm sure a lot of it comes down to network speed.
 
That's cool, home streaming works great on my network (which is GigE). I do realize that most people don't have Cat 5e in their walls. I can see how wireless might add too much latency. Now only if they could add hardware encoding on Radeon cards...

Definitely, I've done it on a Ivy Bridge chip using the HD Graphics 4000 it worked great and CPU usage was very low. I believe in just needs a GPU capable of decoding H264 on the client side at least.

Steam has supported in-home streaming generically (Intel, Nvidia or AMD) for some time, by using a small amount of system resources (a combination of GPU/CPU but I'm not sure on the ratio). This new enhancement takes that a step further: when In-Home Streaming detects a GTX6xx or greater Nvidia card, it will utilize the GPU's onboard H.264 encoder chip and hardware accelerate the process completely for zero impact on system resources. It's the same encoder chip that Shadowplay leverages for zero impact recording.

Why this is a nice enhancement is because it frees up resources slightly for games that will max out a PC, and more importantly it tightens up latency even further (for example when I stream Dark Souls 2 to the living room HTPC now, I can no longer detect any difference between streaming and playing locally. Prior to this hardware acceleration enhancement, I still kind of could tell.)

Now only if they could add hardware encoding on Radeon cards...

That's really a question for AMD.

I do exactly that to both an i3 NUC and a Bay Trail NUC using a 770. Even the Dell Venue 11 pro (Bay Trail) works great over wifi.

Streaming has been working great for a while now. Even high fps titles are working surprisingly well.
 
Too much latency for any game I care about.

I thought so too after trying it last month over a cat6 wired network but last night I tried it over wifi on my new Surface Pro 3... color me shocked; VERY low latency... OVER WIFI!?!? I don't know how all theses changes work but they work.

I'm impressed Valve and NVIDIA :cool:
 
I used it at home several times. Unfortunately, even over gigabit LAN, the latency that is introduced into whatever you're playing makes action games, or really anything that requires a degree of reflexive response intolerable. I got some mileage in Skyrim using the streaming functionality since that game really doesn't consistently require quick responses, but my attempts to play Batman: Arkham Asylum were a bust almost instantly. It's very difficult to play certain games when there is almost a half second of delay between action and response.

TL;DR Cool tech and all, but lag is not trivial.

Maybe your experience will be different but colors were shifted like mad streaming from my Desktop to my SP3. both my desktop monitor and my SP3 were calibrated using Spyder pro hardware.

Sniper Elite 3 was completely unplayable because of how dark it was
 
I don't see any noticeable latency streaming over an 802.11g wireless network that would hinder my gameplay. Would probably be even better over ac. Source PC is wired, destination devices are wireless. IIRC the stats window in Steam said there was an average latency of 18ms. Going to try with my PC wireless this weekend.
 
So Nvidia is touting this but won't enable Shield type streaming for Tegra Note 7.... Thanks Nvidia.
