If you have a teenager, this app is for you.

"We need to develop an app that just shuts their phone completely down and they can't even use it," she said to herself. "And I ... literally just started researching how to develop an app." Once disabled, the child's phone can only call a list of pre-selected numbers to obtain a code to reactivate it. In the process, they are forced to check-in with their parent or another caregiver on the list.

If they're [H]ard, they'll see it as a challenge to overcome rather than a punishment.

So let me get this right.
They took 1 function that almost every antivirus/security app already has (remote lockdown) and are calling it newly discovered?
rofl

So now I need to make the app to unlock and remove this app and sell it for $1?

The crazy thing is this feature SHOULD be being done at the carrier level.

You should be able to set up a "child's phone." You control the list of numbers it can dial from your account page online. So it can only do 911, and whatever other numbers you allow.

You should also be able to do the same thing with texting. Forcing the phone to only text allowed numbers on the list.

There would be no way around this because it isn't happening on the phone.

It would solve... pretty much every problem with giving a young child a phone or a teenager that refuses to behave.

You come in here and crap on this womans dream with your simple answer and logic? HAHA

Seriously though, it would be so easy on their end and would make them money with people that would sign contracts just for that ability.

now someone who understands how this works

but, make sure to appropriately name your app something like "Taming a Horse" :p

Amazing SP episode!

Yeah, I could see this being a huge selling point for parents. Control who you kid can call or receive from, be able to read their texts, see exactly how much time they're spending on the phone and with whom. Even how much time and when they're playing games. "Johnny, it shows you were playing <whatever game> for half an hour during math class today. I'm afraid I'm going to have to disallow all games during school hours from now on."

I'd go for it. I was hoping there was an option for it with Verizon already... Sad there isn't. Not a whole lot of incentive. Why limit access when they get paid for more access?

Kids with phones definitely needs to be addressed. In addition to giving you full control over what a kid is allowed to do, the app should be able to completely hide itself, and also be able to snoop on every aspect of the phone. That way your kid can install shit like snapchat and you can now exactly how much of a little shit your child really is.

Misbehaving child? I have an App for that.

Well, odds are if you're giving your kid a phone, it's part of a family plan, likely with shared minutes/data, so limiting one phone on the plan wouldn't really impact the overall base cost of the plan.

But I could see parents being willing to pay extra for the privilege of monitoring and limiting what a kid can do with said phone. I don't know... for $10 a month I'd go for it if I had a kid.

They could just get a different SIM and/or phone. Instead of useless 1984-ing, maybe basic parenting could be applied.

Or how about just not be shitty parents so that your kids respect you enough to call you when you want them to?

Or better yet, cut off their phone til they learn some respect.

How is a child going to run up an exorbitant bill with the phone company if their phone is locked down?

There are strong financial motivations for not locking down kids' phones.
Sure the $20,000 bills make the news and get slashed, but the far more common $200-$500 bills for excess or non-covered usage just get paid.

Get a dumb phone instead?

No shit huh? Parents that get smart phones for their tweens have no one to blame but themselves. You give a kid such a distraction and then expect them not to be distracted from you or anyone else? If your logic is to be able to reach them in case of an emergency every provider still sells feature phones and you can disable texting from the line. Problem solved. Or you know, you can purchase a 700 dollar smart phone for them, neuter it with this app and feel like you really solved (a self-inflicted) problem.

They need an app for parents on how to raise a child.

I see too many parents giving ipads to their kids and walking away thinking how smart their kids are. Spend time with your kid and raise them right then you won't need phone lockdown apps.

So a mother "invented" consumer driven mobile device management (MDM)? Really ....

So for all the AirWatches, MobileIrons, and Tangoes of the world, take heed: There is a market for lazy parents. Time to cash in.

Never gonna sell. Everyone thinks that they're the perfect, brilliant parent. Tell them to do something, they'll do the opposite. And, of course, every child is perfect. Just ask their parents. Nothing is ever their or their child's fault. It's always someone else, someone else's child, the schools, the teachers, the cops, the neighbors, people do not want to be told what they should and should not do. Read any headline about a kid who did something wrong and the parent automatically defends the kid and blames someone else, even when they commit murder, because it reflects directly on that parent's ability to raise that kid.

There are lots of people who don't have children posting in this thread.

Lol. That doesn't sound like unethical abuse at all. You should probably also put cameras in your children's showers to make sure they aren't up to no good.

You don't need an app for that.

Just revoke their phone privilege and double the time with every offense starting with one week then two weeks then four...
