34" 21:9 UltraWide Displays (3440x1440) - LG UM95/UM65 & Dell U3415W

What exactly do these moronic devs say about Eyefinity/Surround? Or do they forget that its extreme aspect ratios are even wider than 21:9?

I own both, and while it's not supported in most games, Eyefinity would give a gamer an advantage far beyond 21:9. And yet between the two, Eyefinity is supported much more often than 21:9 right now (more likely due to 21:9 becoming much more popular only after getting 34" 3440x1440 panels)

Xin -- That's true and I've never thought about it that way... doesn't make much sense except for the fact that eyefinity is a lot more prevalent

Just spent the last 5-6 hours doing a side by side comparison with this monitor and a 55" Samsung 1080p OLED TV (~$8,000). I sat 2 feet from the monitor and 6 feet from the TV for obvious reasons.

I greatly, hands down, preferred the LG's PPI and aspect ratio for computer/games. The LG does a very good job masking it's "mere" 1000:1 contrast ratio, better than any IPS panel i've seen. As for movies, well OLED simply is an incredible experience even if you are use to the best plasma on the market. My jaw was on the ground. Nothing compares, it's like looking at real life.

I was honestly quite surprised with the opinions I formed. I expected OLED's infinite contrast to make a huge difference in games but I wasn't seeing it, especially in well lit games. I was also expecting more fluid motion in games due to the .1ms response rate. With game mode enabled, it was a little better than IPS, roughly the same TN 60hz, if not a little worse. Outside of game mode, input lag was far too high to play, but it did result in very crisp motion almost on par to TN 120hz.

Until we see 4K OLED, I don't see this monitor being replaced. However, due to OLED burn-in issues, it is still up in the air. My friend already got a minor burn in of the task bar and he only uses a cell level of 3 out of 20. He has his screen saver set to one minute and pixel shift of 4 too. Hopefully they fix this in the future, but I have a feeling it will be a limitation of the technology.

Guys do you suggest buying vesa mount?

That is totally up to you. Vesa mounts are probably better than any normal stand of any monitor simply because you can do more with a vesa mount as opposed to a regular stand. Try using the regular stand and see if it's good enough for your situation. If it isn't then go vesa mount.

I was really looking forward to OLED, seemed like the display we were all looking for. Then found out about the horrible burn in issues and it really bummed me out. Sucks that you have to use "tricks" to try and avoid the burn in.

At least we made the right choice with the LG eh, this might be the perfect monitor this gen.

Now if I could just get someone to trade my 24" dell 4K IPS for a ROG swift. God I had that 4k monitor, $1500 down the drain that was.

Would be close to perfect if they fix the backlight bleeding issues.

What don't you like about the 4k Dell? DPI scaling?

True Color Finder wants me to connect the i1 display pro to the monitor's USB hub. How are you suppose to hook that up when the monitor doesn't come with the required USB cable to attach the hub to the computer? I don't have a cable like that. Was it suppose to come with one?

Also, are you required to leave True Color Finder running after hardware calibration?

Well a good ergotron arm is another 150 dollars. anyone know of cheaper options that works with this monitor without sagging?

it also looks like my hp zr24w monitor's stand could work as a vesa mount, but not sure. It has the 4 screws in the back.. but then i would need something for my 24 inch. Maybe I'll go that way and get a cheaper one for the 24 inch to work both horizontal or vertical.

There is no USB cable with the LG 34UM95 so you need to buy one. Actually you need 2. One from the i1 Display Pro to the monitor and one from the monitor to the PC. I think the i1 Display Pro should come with a USB cable so you only need to buy another one so you can connect the monitor USB to the PC USB.

I don't think you need to leave True Color Finder running since I don't but the program is not power hungry so no need to worry if you need to run it or not.

Both of those options are cutting it pretty close in terms of lbs and I'm not sure they will work

I thought that you would say that.

Other options include:

Ergotron LX (supports up to 25 lbs.)
Ergotron MX (supports up to 30 lbs.)
Humanscale M2 (supports up to 20 lbs.)
Humanscale M8 (supports up to 40 lbs.)

This monitor without the stand supposedly weighs 14.8 lbs., so any of those options should work.

so basically any arm mount will probably be over 120 dollars. Any stand options? something like the one AOC is coming out with that can be adjusted upwards?

While researching a boot issue I have with the LG34UM95 I came across a possible solution for the windows that move when you switch displays, you can read it in this superuser question. I hope this helps some of you.

The issue I'm having is possibly related: Currently I have a PS4 and my computer hooked up to the monitor, PC on DisplayPort, PS4 on HDMI. After a PS4 session if I want to start my computer, I have to set the display to DisplayPort first, otherwise my PC doesn't see the monitor. So if I start my pc first, and then change the input on my monitor, I still don't get a signal. Anyone else having this?

PS It seems to me a lot of this stuff is actually DisplayPort (and possibly Windows) related and has nothing to do with the LG34UM95, what do you think?

Regarding Monitor mounts. I have a dual Ergotron MX; The arm sags down to the desk with the UM35. Is there another bolt I need to tighting in the arm so it wont sag?

Actually, if you check eBay you can often find the Ergotron LX and Humanscale M2 in the $75-90 range.

Isn't there a tension bolt you can adjust? 2.5 mm hex on the back of each arm.. Should be 2 locations...

I have the lighter-duty LX and have no problems with lag at all. Sounds like you need to tighten some bolts.

The ebay stuff are all used and anything that states new is probably really used or was a sample. I doubt a new one will be under 100. (this is for the desk mount. i understand the wall mount is cheaper but that isn't an option for me as I am renting)

well even this says 33 lbs. not sure if it will really work though because it is cheap and some reviews say it sags down at the pivot.

worst case I'll just get those http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001HA6KOC...TF8&colid=28LNIA67E43KC&coliid=I3VUYBWG1OO2ZL stands but it just won't look so nice but better than stacking books underneath or just suck up another 150 bucks and buy the mx. I guess i'll decide that later. Just wondering what to keep an eye out for. There are a lot of things to buy this year like new phone + smartwatch for that phone, ps4, gtx 880 possibly two for sli etc. so just trying not to spend too much if not necessary.

This weekend I just got and installed an Ergotron LX myself and it is FANTASTIC.
Hated the stand that came with my 34um95 (what a cheap stand for such a high priced monitor)

Always wanted that arm (which IMHO is the very best of them all!) but always had "good" monitor stand in the past with lots of adjustment. But the Ergotron is really in another league compared to a good monitor stand.

Got mine for 135$ CAD including shipping.

Here are a few pics (still need to clean the cable clutter that was hidden behind the monitor though!)

Wow.... LG just decided to open the flood gates!

YES, A CURVED 34" DISPLAY (BASED ON THE UM95) IS COMING .... and more!

And a new gaming monitor...Everybody getting a ROG swift just went....wait wait....let me have a look at this a sec.

Not surprisingly it looks like the success of 21:9 and the UM95, LG has decided to go full throttle on new models around that design.

Couldn't help but notice a different stand as well.

Well eff me running sideways up a hill...I don't even know if having ti curved will make all that much of a difference to me visually in terms of immersion (since it's still not IMAX size), but seeing as how I already dropped the $$ for two 34UM94s from the recent Massdrop order it makes me a very sad panda. If that gaming monitor they mentioned was 27" and 1440p and an IPS panel....double eff me - but it doesn't sound like it is the latter two and its only 24".

You wont see one in store for a while. Year end at best I'm thinking. I'm wondering if the new 4k monitors will take more from the 21:9 and thus kill the 21:9 sales? 21:9 monitors dont require the GPU horse power of the 4k though so may not. Most people do not want or can afford two or more high end GPUs.

P.S. We should make a thread for the new monitors so as not to clutter up this one any more than it is.

While I think the announcement of that 34UC97 is exciting, I'm with you...I can't see it drastically increasing immersion but I'm sure it will be an improvement. I got to check out the Samsung curved 55" TV in person and I was far from blown away (not to mention it's probably detrimental to anyone not sitting dead center, which is much more likely with a TV than a monitor) but for PC use I can see a curved display being a more tangible improvement because you're a) closer to it, amplifying the wraparound effect and b) unlikely to have anyone viewing it from, say, a recliner off to the side. Hopefully the curved PC monitors don't have the edge distortion that I read about which supposedly plagues some of the curved TVs.

Regarding the smaller gaming monitor, I can almost guarantee you that it won't be IPS. Sounds like a nice alternative to the ROG Swift and it should be a lot cheaper, but I don't think I could ever go back to using a single 24". Three of them might be nice but then you're going to struggle to maintain high enough frame rates in newer games to take full advantage of the 144hz...and I already decided that I wanted to experience wider-than-widescreen WITHOUT bezels which is what led me to the 34UM95/94. :)

WITHOUT bezels

That is exactly it. In my ideal world I'd have 3x1 surround, each monitor being a 27" IPS @ 2560x1440 with a bezel thickness of < 1.5mm per monitor edge for ~$350 a piece. Unfortunately, ultra-thin bezel monitors with those specs don't come cheap so like you said - off I went to the 34UM94/95.

i think if you have just one of these monitors then the difference won't be all that big compared to a curved one when you compare price, while the improvement in viewing will be minor. But for some that slight extra immersion feel might be worth the extra cost. However, the difference in curved will be much more significant if you were to have three or two of these monitors side by side.

i say enjoy the new 21:9 immersion for now then upgrade to oled, 4k, 120+hz, possibly larger and maybe even wider monitor in the future when they become more mainstream and worth the price.
