so after trying out several Linux Distros i gave LinuxMint a shot since somebody there claims it works with my Huawei modem. Downloaded the iso (yes i got a 800mb download limit each day, makes downloading iso's fun).
Installed it and guess what...of course the modem is not working at all.
So LinuxMint, nice community good help in forums...yeah right. How im gonna get there ??
You need to register to create an account to post in forums to get help ...good thats normal.
Now whats that ??? I need an registration code, how im gonna get it. Simple.
You need to connect to the internet within LinuxMint, open the chat tool in LinuxMint and ask for that registration code. After that you can create your account and ask for help. WTF
Helloooooooooooo...thats exactly my problem...it does not detect my modem, how im gonna connect to anything ???
Do they ever think that maybe connecting to the internet might be exactly the problem ?
Kinda joke of the day

Sorry man, I'm sure some other member is going to be able to help you, or at least help you register or post the question on your behalf.

btw may I ask where you live, or which ISP, for the 800MB limit?

Linux Mint is basically Ubuntu. If it isn't known to be working on Ubuntu, there's a very good chance it isn't going to work on Mint.

I assume you are using Ethernet? What's your Ethernet card?

BTW your ISP sucks. What are you using?

so wont work.

Silly they would make you do that.

Not too silly, when you think about it.

Forum spammers have gotten obnoxious this summer. Another forum I post on has been fighting a war of continual 3-4x+ daily banning of a spammer that gets passed all the standard checks. Something like this is a good way of cutting spammers off at the their feet....allbeit if you have a shitty ISP and are still using a less-than-supported modem it sucks.

I guess, a recent study had shown that about %95 of all captch systems can be bypassed by bots easily.

But even then Mint should perhaps do an offline code generation based on some algorithm vs needing an online connection.

Captchas generally don't do much anymore. IF you sizable one you MIGHT see an increase in spam on a popular forum.

A good anti spam plugin stops a ton of spam, email verification helps a little, and Captcas help a tiny bit. This method of anti spam works great but absolutely sucks for real people.

globe broadband philippines. Huawei usb dongle. Acceptable terms of fair use for browsing. Yeah i know it sucks. 800mb ourdays is a joke.
(miss my old comcast cable)

well they got a supported hardware search. Found my modem as working out of the box....

using phone ? expensive...could buy a new netbook for that phonebill

okay....i sent them an email and really got a nice reply including link to their tech support forums where you dont need a registration code. Too bad i didnt get there directly from their website.
I miss the "old days" when navigating was still simple :(

finally got that modem to work in LinuxMint. Ist not a hardware problem. Its the software that comes with it. Simply blocking that and modem works right away. Easy setup in networks connection. Done.
Connected to LinuxMint chat help, really nice people there to help.
Idles with 600MB RAM usage a little high but better than windows 7.
Just wondering that after over 4 weeks of asking in linux support forums that nobody could point me in the direction of a possible software problem.
Btw download limitation doesnt work in Linux....nice side effect ;)

Which software comes with 'it'? You mean Huawei had some linux software shipping with it? Or is it something that came with Mint?

that USB dongle got some Software onboad from ISP. Installs and runs itself when you plug it in a windows PC. No, it got no Linux software onboard. Its supposed to be used with windows based systems only.
That modem is Huawei but ISP is Globe. They sell that in a package with sim card, modem and software preinstalled.
If i block that software the modem works fine in Linux, i just cant use the features anymore like texting and calling.

I still don't get how you would need to block some windows software to run something on linux. Your mint will automatically disregard any windows software on your stick. Windows software does not run on Mint unless you command Wine to run it.

Are you sure you're not talking about your USB dongle being detected as a memory stick in linux instead of usb modem because of the storage for the windows software? That is a common problem with Huawei and fixable by usb_modeswitch.

So you can now bypass the 800MB limit? Hope you don't get caught...

well i used it for Linux to download a couple of programs and updates, kinda around 300mb, plugged it back into my windows pc and the data usage history showed only 4mb. Happens everytime i do that..so im not really intenionally bypassing it.

ok, i used makulu before. Its a Debian distro with wine preinstalled. Wine of course executes the windows software on the modem. Even though modeswitch was working, the modem refused to connect.
Linux Mint doesnt come with wine. But even then every time i plugged in the modem some error messages showed up about not able to execute or open a program. Then another error message cant mount drive... In the end the modem of course did not work.
Now i kinda blocked that and it works. Dont ask me about the details im still trying to figure out myself how that happend. Im new to Linux and i still got no real idea what im doin...
for now im happy that it works and i can use my old netbook again ;)

if youre interested, i was trying out Ubuntu 12, Lubuntu, Q4OS, Sparky, Makulu 6.1 and Mint 17.

Yeah ok so your problem was not the software, it was linux mounting your USB modem as a USB flash drive because it detected the drivers section storage. This is a very common problem with huawei, actually happened to me personally.

It could simply be an effect of the software on the modem not being designed to run on Linux. It doesn't mean that your ISP isn't tracking your data usage.

well i get over 800mb out of it a day. Can do my daily stuff and still got enough left for "popcorn time"...

Just don't act surprised when the ISP sends you the nice 'you have exceeded your quota by 2 gigabytes and each Mb above that is USD 1,50' letter.

I'm pretty sure they'll close your SIM once they find out you've been exceeding the quota somehow. But so far you're lucky I guess!

possibly they gonna do that...but SIMs are cheap. No big deal.
On the other hand, its not my fault if they dont like to support Linux. If THEY want me to use windows only then it would only be fair if THEY pay for it. Otherwise i choose whatever OS is convenient for me.

I couldn't get this to work either! Linux sux!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

That's...that's not a very good logic to follow.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I haven't seen one of those in over 20 years!
Thanks, you just made my night thinking about how bad my internet is now in comparison to using that thing!
:D
