What to look for in Used Rackmount Servers on eBay?

You'll probably get errors. It looks for a default amount of fans that operating. At least that's been my experience.

Hopefully it will just be a "press F1 to continue" type error at boot time. I can live with that (even though I'd rather it powered on automatically)

I'm just hoping the noise level from the HP DL180 G6 i just ordered is tolerable.

It's going in the basement, so it doesn't have to be quiet, but from what I am reading online, as soon as you insert a riser in the PCIe slot (which I will need to do) all the fans go to 100% (since HP doesn't know what you plugged in and how hot it gets), and there is no way to override this behavior.

The server has 8 60mm 14000rpm fans.

This guy measured it at over 100db!!!

At that noise level I'll be able to hear it from the basement when I'm on the second floor of the house! Not to mention that at full bore each of the 8 fans uses 18W of power. Thats 144W just for fans!

I've seen it jokingly referred to as the HP DL180 Dreamliner...

Major design fail on the part of HP which I unfortunately did not discover until after I ordered it...

I may have to cut out the existing fans and replace them with quieter, lower power, lower RPM units.

I have a 160 G6 so it's 1U and it's not that bad to be honest. My switches are quite a bit louder. I have 2 of them and they both have quad port NICs in them and neither of them changed the fan speed when they were installed.

It seems Canada always gets screwed over with stuff like this.

I got both my DL160 G6s from Ontario. 2x 4 core Xeons with 32GB RAM for $350 free shipping each.

They are hard to find and are mostly all gone, but there some good deals in Canada back in early winter.

As I remember wrt my DL180 G6... if you use recognised HP expansion cards you are fine. Stick something in that isn't HO, like a non HP badged LSI array card, and the BMC won't know what it is so sticks the fans to high. Unlike the 3xx range there is no control within the BIOS. The DL180G6 is the loudest server in my rack (beating my Supermicro RJBOD's!) Which is why until I can be arsed to mod the fans its unused.

Forgot to put - see link here, someone used Zalman fan controls to reduce the noise - http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/ProLia...sy-fan-speed/td-p/4662576/page/3#.U91nN_5OUuU
