34" 21:9 UltraWide Displays (3440x1440) - LG UM95/UM65 & Dell U3415W

For people that still want to claim there isn't 2 controllers in this monitor, another person reporting issues with half of the screen over on OCN.

I setup an RMA for my 37 day old monitor. The problem is that for the second time the right half of the monitor freezes but the left half still works fine. I can even drag windows through the right half and end up on my third monitor on the right of that.

I wanted to share my RMA story so other know what to expect, at least for the short term. I tried to use the online chat, and after 15 minutes of waiting, I was told that I would have to call in for support. After an hour on hold, I used the email support while still on hold. After 1.5 hours, I was just about ready to hang up and to my surprise someone answered. Some cool dude down in Panama City, Panama. He went through a couple of things with me and ultimately decided on an RMA(like I was gonna accept anything else).

He took all my info and said I would be sent to the advanced replacement dept to take my credit card info. Another 15 minute wait and I finally get through to someone in Alabama. Another very nice lady. She says they don't have surplus stock so they would be sending me a new one. Wow! I was surprised. Thinking about it some more, I'm thinking they know there is a problem with the earlier monitors and they are just replacing them but not telling anybody about it. She told me that it would ship out of Texas and take 3-5 business days. The really strange thing is, she said I wouldn't need to use my credit card and she had already placed the order. So, I'm cautiously optimistic that I will get a new monitor in the next 3-5 days.

Once I get the new monitor I'll report back on what rev and build date is. So, if I get a new monitor, I will be very happy.

That doesn't mean there's two controllers though... just could be a general panel defect. More people would be running into this if it was some kind of controller issue.

For example, the half screen issue with MST monitors affected *all* of them

I've twice had the right side half of my UM95 go bonkers, but in both cases it was after awakening the display from sleep. It has never happened while the monitor was on and being used.

In both cases I simply cycled the power of the monitor to correct the problem.
Both occurrences taking place several weeks apart, so I'm not particularly worried about it.

That's great news.

Was anyone having flickering problems with AMD cards by chance?

I have the 34UM95 paired with a Sapphire Vapor-X R9 290X 4GB TRI-X OC (yeah, that's a mouthful) and my display suffers from graphical glitching/flickering with DisplayPort 1.2 enabled using Catalyst 14.4. I have tried both the DP cable that came with the display and a heavier gauge cable that I had laying around and both exhibit the same symptoms. Sometimes I get the corruption, other times I do not; I am not sure what the trigger is. Once it starts to happen, though, it gets progressively worse such that the display becomes unusable until DP 1.2 is disabled. The visual corruption is accompanied by static/popping through the speakers.

I have an MSI GTX 780 OC 6GB in another system but haven't had a chance to try it paired with the display yet.

Yep, same exact thing here. I think it's the DP port tech on the AMD cards. My 7970's would do the same thing on my Samsung s27a750d panel.

AMD users, I would suggest reporting it to AMD. Still no flickering here after updating NVIDIA drivers.

I did for over a year to AMD. After numerous emails, they finally told me it was a defect of the monitor :(

Now, I know this isnt true as my last 3 DP panels have had issues.

Yeah, I kind of blew off AMD video cards because of glitchy things. losing the proper mouse icons in games used to drive me crazy, and it was just a driver issue they never fixed.

Sort of sucked too as I became quite the fanboy after the 4870 and 5870.

Ah well, went back green and haven't had to deal with this stuff you guys have to with our LG. Ignorance is bliss.

Was in best buy today looking at the 29inch of this and my wife of all people was like that's to small lol. She was like it needs to be taller. Said I could get the 34 lol. Think I'm going to wait till the AOC comes out to see what the price is on it. Didn't want to spend over 600 on a monitor. Have to by a monitor and a tripple stand so I can my work monitors above this. Being on the sides would be way to much head movement. Dual 290's should drive 3440x1440 fine on all games right?

I'm with you on that. Many AMD cards offer a performance advantage at a given price point when compared to nVidia. Yet, every time I've been lured in I've been happy with their performance but always went back to the green side due to weird, glitchy issues with AMD. Not sure if they're driver or hardware related but that's been the case every single time when I've tried an AMD card. I've just had better luck with nVidia cards working well in every scenario so I'm forced to pay more for the same performance that I'd get with an AMD card in most cases. Additionally, it used to be the case that while AMD cards would boast higher peak frames, reviewers found that nVidia delivered a smoother gameplay experience overall as their minimum and average frame rates were higher. Not sure if this is still the case these days but it used to be in the 5870 days and earlier.

Crossfire vs. SLI support and performance is another matter, and so is Eyefinity vs. 3D Surround support. Ideally, right now I'd like to have a 780Ti as well as an R9 290x to have the best of both worlds.

Dual 290s should make for extremely playable games on 3440x1440 yes, maybe not so much in the future but for now, yes. Just like how 680s and 780s, normally very powerful cards, are showing signs of struggling with demanding games and high detail on this monitor. Of course this assumes that you want 60fps with the detail cranked up...that will be more difficult to achieve as time goes on but you should be fine for a while. You can always turn the detail down to maintain 60fps but who wants to play games on a monitor like this with the graphics settings turned down?

As for the AOC, I'm contemplating waiting for it too but I don't think there's any way it'll sell for $600 upon release. By the time it's available for $600 or less there will likely be better monitors out which is why I'm waiting for the 34UM94 to hit Massdrop and if it can be had for $800 or $850 with a 3 year warranty then I think I'm gonna pull the trigger.

Thanks, guys. I knew about WSGF, but unless there is a way to search or filter by aspect ratio it looks like I'm faced with clicking each game title to check the for 21:9 support. With nearly 500 games in my Steam library, that's a lot of clickin'. I was looking more for a specific subset like "The following games in List A natively support 21:9. These other games in List B can be made to support it with a hack or edit."

I think that if a game is listed as Hor+ it will support 21:9 because the game engine expands the fov horizontally while keeping the vertical fov relatively constant. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Pre-order prices for the AOC u3477Pqu have started to drop. Lowest so far is €569 without VAT, so a US price of $550 is still possible.

That's if AOC actually gets their shit together.. Europe release is very soon, and still no mention of this display at the AOC US website, and no US pre-orders anywhere.

Yeah, I hope it does sell for that! At that price, it could very well sway me from the LG despite no internal LUT. But if the Massdrop happens first I'm not sure I'll have the patience to hold out for the AOC, haha. I need one of these in a bad way...

I have a 780 Ti, and I also get random flickering/corruption when DP 1.2 is enabled.
I don't think it's necessarily an ATI problem, might be the display itself...

I understand that internal LUT is great and all but if the AOC does not have all these backlit and freezing issues that the LG has, even at the same price I probably will want the AOC more. The fact that it could potentially be much cheaper is an extra bonus. Now if the AOC also have these issues then I don't know which to go with. Plus I dont have a calibrator

This has possibly been answered in the pages previously and did not readily show up on a search, so apologies if it has ...

I just got my monitor set up tonight and noticed an "interesting" quirk. I have a Retina Macbook and a gaming PC connected, when I switch inputs from Displayport (PC) to Mac (Thunderbolt) all of my window positions on the PC ge reset for lack of a better word. Everything is crammed into the upper-left corner just like I had set the resolution to 800x600 or something.

I realize this could be just the way they implemented their input switching or hopefully someone here can tell me how this can be resolved :)

Appreciate the advice,

I am inclined to agree. I plugged the DP cable into the motherboard DP port which uses the i7-4790K iGPU and am unable to produce any sort of video glitching. Plug the cable back into the R9 290X and the glitches return.

Hmm this got me a bit worried.. Got a 7970 and waiting with the finger on the trigger for the AOC but now I might have to hold off on that until nVidia release their 800 series(oct/nov..such a wait..:()

Oh I totally agree. I too would rather have a monitor with none of these reported issues vs. an internal LUT. But as far as I know, the jury is still out on where the actual problems stem from and how many people are affected. Hopefully by the time the AOC is released, we'll know if these issues are being caused by the actual monitors themselves, the cables, the DP interface, the video cards, or the drivers. If the AOC is released and no one is reporting similar issues, I'd be inclined to say that it's something with the LG units. If the AOCs exhibit similar behavior then we're still kinda up in the air...is it the cables? Interface? Drivers? Something with the panel circuitry?

I almost talked myself into going with the 34UM65 last night as I haven't read about any issues with it and games would perform better, but I'd really like the smaller dot pitch and 1440 vertical resolution of the UM95. With the UM65 I'd be gaining width but no height, which would be okay, but it's not like it's only half the price of the UM95. Considering there is only a couple hundred dollars difference between the two, I'd really prefer the UM95 and just upgrade my graphics card if I need to.

Sigh, I just need to be patient until more units are shipped and we can try to determine where the problems lie. Hopefully they are correcting issues with the backlight bleed and making firmware updates to address any initial issues. Not sure if the anomalies mentioned in this thread can be fixed with updates to the monitor until we know what's causing them, though.

I decided to give the 34UM65 a try. I got one from Costco last Friday. So far no light bleed, just average IPS glow. Much better than the UM95 I had that was orange. Also since Costco's return policy is so great (90 days) I can always return it if I decide to go for the UM95. I was coming from a 1920x1200 display and performance is almost equal. Pretty happy so far.

This happens with all of my monitors when they get switched off or unplugged. It's just how Windows handles "losing" a monitor. Which version of Windows are you running? On 7 the icons usually end up back in their original spots once the monitor is reattached.

I haven't tried my GTX 780 yet but I would probably wait, were I in your shoes. I do find this whole issue somewhat surprising given that AMD is the one that asked for the FreeSync extension to DP1.2, so I would have expected their stuff to work flawlessly. Guess not.

Aside from the "DP1.2 enabled" corruption with my R9 290X, the 34UM95 I received from B&H looks gorgeous. No odd tint. No dead pixels. *Very* minor light bleed in the lower right corner that is not discernable if eye level is 2/3 the height of the display and brightness is set to 50% (it came at 100% brightness which was too much).

As I have a need for 2 of these displays, I will probably pick up the AOC u3477Pqu for comparison.

The AOC is the same panel as in the UM95.

I think they're all using the same panel.. the LG 34UM95, LG 34UM94, Dell U3415W, AOC u3477Pqu, and the new Philips display that's to be released in September at IFA.

Dumb question, but how would that panel be any different than the one some have problems with?

monitors do not qualify as TV or computers. So Costco actually have a "lifetime" return policy on that.

Like with televisions, the panels themselves may be the same, but the electronics driving them could be entirely different. Purely as an example and in no way meant to be factual, the AOC might support DP1.2a with FreeSync, whereas the LG, with the same panel, might not. My problem is not with the visual properties of the panel, but with the behavior of DP1.2 when connected to an R9 290X (works fine using DP1.2 on the motherboard).

~3 times over the last few weeks i've noticed an "unsync" tear right down the middle of my screen for a split second. Seems to happen about once every ~20 hours of usage. It almost looks like a vsync tear, but it's dead center of the screen going vertically, and happens even on the desktop.

No one else experience this?

Doesn't that only apply to actual members, not people who paid the non-membership fee? I bought from Costco and i'm debating exchanging due to the above issue, but they don't even list the UM95 anymore. I'm still trying to figure out if this is a simple firmware issue...

I never noticed any tearing problems, only flickering/corruption when DP 1.2 is enabled.
Once every 20 hours sounds kind of hard to catch in practice, though.

If I disable DP 1.2, corruption goes away. I'm using the DP port on an Nvidia card, so it's not
only an ATI problem. However, judging from some other responses here, the IGP on
Intel motherboards handle DP 1.2 without corruption problems. So not sure whether
it's the GFX card of the monitor at fault here, but something's not working right for DP 1.2.

i connected usb from monitor to the pc and true color finder failed to initialize. did anyone else have this issue? do i need to have a calibrator tool connected

So, dumb question for skimike and alamone since you are both having problems with DP 1.2: is there anything to be gained by having it enabled? I thought that DP 1.0/1.1 was more than sufficient for the 34UM95 in terms of bandwidth. Is there any particular reason that 1.2 should be enabled on this monitor?

I contacted Costco to see if I could setup an exchange, but they told me that the monitor is no longer available. I assume that just means that won't carry it anymore.

Now I have to decide if I want to keep this one, or return it and buy from some other source. :(

DP1.2 is required for 10-bit color functionality. The colors pop a bit more, can be more accurate if taking advantage of the calibration capabilities when paired with a spyder or x-rite, and gradation is definitely better. Where a 6- or 8-bit display might show color banding, a 10-bit panel (I believe this panel is really 8-bit + frc) will show none. I feel like the display calibrated better under DP1.2, when comparing a photograph to the screen, but there may be a psychological factor at work there because I can't do a side-by-side comparison.

Since I game pretty heavily on the monitor, it's not a huge issue for me but it is one of those things that just nags at the back of my mind, making me regret giving AMD another chance. Not too much longer until I can swap it out with an 880, at least.

This problem isn't AMD exclusive i believe. 3 posts above Alamone said he experienced the same problem with his nvidia card. BTW could be firmware/driver related. After i upgraded my ASUS Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II bios everything worked like a charm using catalyst 14.7 beta.

Yes I have experienced this as well. Maybe 4 times in the last 4 days. I am using HDMI since it is my only option at the moment. I had little bit similar tearing/flicker with my Asus PA246Q monitor with HDMI, but changing to DP helped. I hoped that changing to DP would have helped in this case too but I assume that you are using DP and still experiencing this.

video of pa246q flicker http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZDsOkVG1bk
EDIT: however on 34um95 it seems to be only 1 line of flicker

I am using DP 1.2.

Hoping for a firmware update, happened twice today. It's rare enough that I could tolerate it, assuming I know it's not faulty and going to randomly die.
