What plans does Satya Nadella have for the Xbox brand? Let's just keep our fingers crossed the company doesn't start cranking out Xbox watches, phones and tablets. :(

"I also want to share some additional thoughts on Xbox and its importance to Microsoft," wrote Nadella. "As a large company, I think it’s critical to define the core, but it’s important to make smart choices on other businesses in which we can have fundamental impact and success. The single biggest digital life category, measured in both time and money spent, in a mobile-first world is gaming. We are fortunate to have Xbox in our family to go after this opportunity with unique and bold innovation. Microsoft will continue to vigorously innovate and delight gamers with Xbox. Xbox is one of the most revered consumer brands, with a growing online community and service, and a raving fan base."

Sounds to me like he is saying they are doubling down and Xbox is not going anywhere.

*Spits his Coca-Cola all over his monitor*

BUH-WHA?!?!?

Oh please tell me he's not going to try to Steve Jobs his job.

pretty soon you'll have the xphone, the xpod, the xpad, the xmug, the xpen the xOS and the xInflatableDoll(anatomically correct)

WooHoo, just as I predicted in my mind, Microsoft hate is coming on strong. :D

I would almost expect to see phones and tablets. Watches, not so much.

I like microsoft for their business stuff, i even like their operating system, but outside of that i have ZERO faith in them because just as they get their product figured out they abandon the market

Not that you are wrong because there is evidence that says otherwise but, when it comes to the Xbox brand, they have been consistent and stable with it. (13 years of Xbox and still going strong.) Heck, even my Surface RT tablet which is supposedly supposed to be dead in terms of popularity is still get consistent updates.

I trust Microsoft to do that more than most other companies out there. (Google, Acer, Apple and so on.)

Let me decipher this statement for the rest of you.

They want to find additional ways into your pocket with micro-transactions via mobile games.

Smart watches at this point is a gimmick device. They do the same things a smart phone does only smaller visually and this is at a time when people are demanding larger screens on their smart phones. It's a dangerous space to get into according to industry insiders. Many watch makers have reported 20% to 30% decline in sales over the last 5 years. Why? The smart phone. in the UK, only 1 in 7 people where a watch, in the US it's something like 1 in 10.

What it would take for me to wear a watch?

Comfort. It would have to be very light weight and not sticky and or causing sweat. I would want the ability to talk from my watch. Holding my hand up to the side of my face / ear without a cell phone to talk would not really be that big of a deal. Try it. It's rather natural feeling. I would want a scrolling display much like a marquee. Instead of stock market numbers scrolling at the bottom, other information could go here.

I trust Microsoft to do the right thing more than all those companies, on that I agree with you. I'm particularly talking about things such as the Zune, their original tablet pc, the horrible job of continual development for windows ce to the point were ford is pulling it out of their vehicles. They invented the smart watch and failed at that. The zune one is the biggest one that bothers me because in the end it was a superior product, but due to it not being awesome initially they decided it wasn't worth the trouble of fixing the brand. Xbox is a super strong brand and it might work. But if it gets tough i dont see them sticking it out. If they keep producing the surfaces ill change my mind because they are awesome and having trouble penetrating market share.

I don't want something with an antenna actually strapped to my body. As for watches, I stopped wearing one in college, long before I had a cell phone. It's not like it's hard to find a clock and see the time. And most often the precise time is irrelevant. Leave when you need to, arrive when you get there. I'm not prone in a ditch somewhere waiting to blow the charges at 0300 so the assault can commence.

Microsoft has no choice cause the Xbox One is failing faster then the Nokia Ngage. But it needs more then just Microsoft ready to throw money randomly at it.

#1 Still needs to be cheaper. Costs the same as the PS4 but has less power? That doesn't make sense.

#2 Multiplayer should be free and shouldn't require Xbox Live monthly payment.

#3 Needs more exclusive original games.

Just make Xbox one games play on pc. Then we'll be in business

Make Xbox360 digital library (think live and all) pc compatible. Not only does this extend the life of the system, it makes a immediate potential revenue stream for many games that might be considered "dead". This also makes Windows8 more attractive to the gamer crowd. This also gives the xbox360 a possibility of a new user base, extending the life of the platform (you think Ps2 lived on awhile? - this will make xbox360 live on).

God damn people dont know history at all. Microsoft has held back computing by DECADES. you TRUST THEM???? ARE YOU INSANE????? MS poured BUCKETS of money in SCO trying to kill Linux and you TRUST THEM???? FUCK!

Um, what? Do you not remember how the original Xbox One plan was the most restrictive anti-consumer console ever made? The plan was for you to "dial-in" every 24 hours like an inmate on parole or else you couldn't play your games, even single player ones. There was of course no plan as to what happened to your games once they inevitably got shut off (like they already have with earlier Xbox games). Kinect was mandatory and had to be always on, monitoring, or else you couldn't use the system. There never was a clear message as to whether used games would be possible, or only under certain conditions. They STILL don't have clear answer for indie developers. "Consistent and stable" has not been their goal with the Xbox One.

Yeah, whatever you say, enjoy your products then that do not have long term support. Amazing to me how folks can hate a company so much that..... well, maybe not so amazing. So, in other words, you are stuck in the past at E3 2013, eh? Good luck with that, I hear a Delorean makes a great time machine.

What I hate is the concept of ANY game 100% dying because of artificial reliance on a company server that will get shut off at some point. Imagine if you wouldn't be able to watch movies that are older than about 10 years, it's the same concept, yet it's somehow tolerated in gaming. Microsoft seemed to be celebrating the concept with the Xbox One, which I found atrocious. Now if they had come out and said they had an end-of-life plan, that would be a completely different story, but there's not a lot of reason to think they would have.

Also I don't know what you mean telling me to enjoy things without long term support, that's kind of what all this is about. Ending support is one thing, turning thing off with a switch it another. I like games to NOT DIE, support or not.

One company tried the kill its competition? Ahhh duh?

Could not have said that better.

Everything tetris42 stated was correct.
There were huge press conferences about it last year, so I'm not sure why you're so quick to make fun of him.

People were hating Microsoft for what they were doing with the Xbone (pre-release).
It wasn't until they got rid of all of the horrid DRM and system check-in "features" that individuals started to look their way again.

...and yes, the DeLorean does make a great time machine.

I have to agree with this.
In the interview between Angry Joe and Major Nelson, this was one of the key points he brought up.

Nelson took the microphone from him and basically said "deal with it".
Companies like that do not deserve backing from their loyal fans and supporters.

Unfortunately, Microsoft went from being the rebel of the 80's and 90's, and turned into exactly what they were fighting against.
Linux just picked up where it left off.

To quote Steve Ballmer:
My children - in many dimensions they're as poorly behaved as many other children, but at least on this dimension I've got my kids brainwashed: You don't use Google, and you don't use an iPod.

We don't have a monopoly. We have market share. There's a difference.

The number one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential.
There's quite a bit of irony in that last one, considering Microsoft has gone from empowering individuals (MS-DOS to Windows 7) to enslaving them (Windows 8 and Phone 8).

Linux OSes and it's user-base may not be perfect, but at least we're trying to wake people up and have them realize that drinking the cool-aid provided by Microsoft, may not be such a good thing. :(

Holy shit, even I didn't realize that the Xbone was that expensive.
I thought people bought consoles because they are cheaper than a PC... and all of that is just for one year?

^ Wait, Windows? Guess the joke's on us! :p

They should sell the Xbox division or spin it off. The name Xbox is synonymous with Red Ring of Death, and financial failure.

Not really if anything the microsoft association hurts xbox brand name more than any of that. Because it's popular to hate on Microsoft. RROD wasn't that big of a deal to most people as microsoft ate shit in order to make it right, as long as the person wasn't a complete dumbass most RROD cases could get their xbox repaired or replaced for no cost. Which in large part where that whole financial failure comes from, plus the fact that division contains skype acquisition and windows phone.

Anyways h8ers gonna h8

Sounds to me like Microsoft is getting into mobile gaming.
