If reports from macrumors are true, it looks like Broadwell has been pushed back even further, into early to mid 2015.

Have been wanting to pick up a MBPr 15 but was waiting for a potential fall refresh. Guess it is all clear now :D

I was wondering if I should wait for a refresh...guess this answers that question :D

They can still update them this year with Haswell refresh and Nvidia 800-series Maxwell mGPU so they will update the rMPB soon, just not with Broadwell.

I don't see how they could put an 800M series GPU in a retina chassis.

Slightly disappointing, my MBP 2011 is constantly overheating and have been trying to hold out until the next line of rMBP's come out!

For what I'm going to use it for, the GPU won't be of any use since I'm not going to be gaming on it. I have time and can wait a bit to see what sort of light refresh they'll do this year though.

But the 800m is three times hotter and consumes five times as much power. Maxwell was never meant to work in laptops.

Fine by me, I would like my late 2013" 13" MBPr to last a while :D.

I just don't see how a thin chassis like a retina MBP can handle the heating/cooling and power issues of the 800M series. My retina MBP with a 650M gets blisteringly hot whenever I game on it. But, I don't build MBPs. Maybe Apple will figure out a way to do it.

Where are you seeing these heating and power issues? The 800M series if anything should use less power and run cooler.

Go look at the razorblade:

Its about the same size as a retina macbook pro, they cram a 870m in it, no issues.

As I wrote, I don't build laptops. Congrats, Razer. Too bad you couldn't have helped Apple with the 650M retinas.

Nvidia comes up with TDP targets for their mobile parts, which is basically how hot they're allowed to get and how much power they're allowed to use.

Their whole engineering goal is to get more performance while using less heat/power, and that's exactly what they've done with the 800 series. Just because the number is higher doesn't mean you'll necessarily need a 1000 watt power brick and water cooling to run the chip. Notebook GPUs have to work inside notebooks :)

The issues with the 650M getting hot in the rMBP is Apple's fault, not Nvidia's. Macbook Pros have had this problem since forever.

Until I was made aware of that Razer Blade, the only laptops I'd ever seen with 800M GPUs were 1+ inch thick beasts from Sager, MSI, and Asus.

Which is why I chided Apple and wished (not entirely in jest) they'd consult Razer on mobile GPUs.

I actually had one for about a week before I resold it...

It was a fine laptop, but Windows 8.1 did not handle the 3200x1800 resolution well AT ALL. Maybe they've updated drivers/software since then, but it would run games in tiny little boxes if you ran it at less than 3200x1800. Many programs also had microscopic text as well.

Otherwise it would have been a near perfect laptop (just had meh battery life).

If you hadn't noticed, Intel said during its quarterly earnings today that Broadwell is still on track for the holidays. No guarantees that Apple will be part of that first wave, but I'm sure it'd like to have some genuinely improved Macs shipping in 2014.

I currently run 8.1 through a VDI session using the Horizon View and it scales perfectly. I also had Fusion installed and it scaled properly but had no need for it once I got View configured.

For games I've been using Steam Streaming, very surprised at how well it handles it over 802.11ac.

Just grabbed a 13" Air for $799 with student discount (no, I'm not a student ;)), pretty sweet deal for a nice portable laptop that I'll only ever browse the web on and code.

To be honest, the addition of a retina screen on the air line-up sounds great, but I don't want a 12" laptop. 13" is my sweet spot for laptops (why I got rid of my 15" rMBP). There's something about the shape of the air that does it for me versus the 13" rMBP. Might be the $500 price tag difference as well, hah!

Yeah, I am not too big on the 12 either, I think 13 is perfect for productivity. For me 14 is too big, 11 is too small, 13 is just right and I do not know if I want to give up an inch. I do not need "more" portability

I like my 15" rMBP, but it's more laptop than I want/need. A 13" Broadwell rMBP is gonna be sexy sweet. Hope we see it before year's end, but I doubt it.

Scratch that, 749 bucks for the 13" base at best buy right now with a student discount. Get your friends with a .Edu account to hook you up.

I'd be all over that if I didn't already have my 15" rMBP. Not willing to take that big a step back from what I've got now.

For sure, the rMBP is a beast, and I miss mine, but in my situation it was completely useless. It was heavier than I'd have liked, and I already had my desktop which obliterated it in power. It's a hell of a daily driver though for the folks that use it strictly for work.
