I've been looking at the buy/sell forum posts alot recently, and am wondering why is it that so many people are trying to sell their R270/280/290 & 77,78, & 79xx series cards ?

Weren't these cards just recently released, or are they really just not that good for some reason...and what are the alternatives that make it so tempting to want to replace these cards in the first place?

I know video cards are forever & constantly changing like everything else in computer tech, but are things so bad now that everyone just upgrades everything all the time just for the sake of upgrading and getting those small, incremental increases in performance .....

Apparently I have missed something along the way, but after reading through 1000's of spec sheets & reviews/reports/press releases, I just haven't seen any MAJOR, SUPER-DUPER, BREAKTHROUGH TYPE of advances in GPU tech that would IMHO justify this constant upgrade cycle.....

Can someone please enlighten me :D

Lot's of people bought multiple cards for mining. It's not really profitable any more with GPU's, so they are selling them off.

it has to be mining because i saw a report the other day saying that gpu sales are also down. people are buying miners used cards instead or the miners brought up the percentages and now they're comign back to normal maybe

People where buying batches of 50 graphics cards each and setting up mining rigs with them. Some people are selling off their graphics cards now.

These video cards were used for mining Scrypt-based cryptocurrencies. With the release of ASICs made for mining these coins, difficulty has gone up and so it is not profitable to mine with GPUs anymore. There are now X11 and X13 type coins that are right now easy for GPUs including NVIDIA, but the potential for profit is not nearly as much as it was with Scrypt.

This sums it up perfectly.

Good time to grab a used card if you need one imo. I've seen a 7970 for $155 and the same 270X in my server for $140, as well as a few reference 290 cards selling for ~$250

I have a question: Is it risky buying a used mining card? There is a guy near me selling a lot of 7950's, I could get 2 of them for about 2/3 the cost of a 280x and was thinking of jumping, but the word mining has me kind of nervous about pulling the trigger.

Crapshoot.

Crapshoot.

That's kind of my feeling, I emailed the guy about their running conditions and this is what he sent back.

"Total run time for the GPUs varies. I ran them all for 3 weeks From jan 26th to feb 17th. Then stopped after the first halving to build the mining enclosure cause it was starting to warm up. I never let the cards exceed 75c and their total average run temps were 72c. I never got to run all 24 GPUs at once after feb 17th. I stopped mining in March due to a Severe family emergency, what I have posted is all that's left from a 24 GPU farm. Not listed are 4 more 7950s that need testing/RMA. I sold them on reddit and had to exchange them because the user reported "odd behavior", although I havent had the chance to verify, so I'm not sure what's wrong. The 5 in the picture, however, work perfectly fine"

I don't think it's just mining... part of it is the soon to be released Maxwell cards from Nvidia. The 800 series.

...in my opinion that is.

A lot of people have been in this game long enough (myself included) to recognize that once the 800 series cards are on the shelf, all of the 700 series Nvidia cards, as well as all of the AMD 2XX series cards will drop in value, potentially by quite a lot.

So, the time to sell is now. Sit on the cash and hedge your bets. If Maxwell pans out, providing 10% or 15% performance increase at half the power consumption, expect to see even more used video cards hit the forums.

PS: Also, eBay fucking sucks balls now, from a sellers perspective that is. It's scam central and the fee's are out of control. They're in a death spiral if you want my personal opinion. So, more people will be selling their used gear on forums where legal mumbo jumbo doesn't get so much in the way.

Total newb question, but what is an ASIC?

Application Specific Integrated Circuit.

Its basically a chip that only has one purpose.

In the case of mining, the ASICs only job is to crunch the numbers for the algorithm being applied.

I think selling your card now would be silly as those cards are still a bit of a ways off. I also think that the #s that people are selling them in indicates miners selling for the most part. Selling right now would be a bad idea if you were just looking to get more $$$ for your card before the next gen as the prices are (or atleast were, I haven't looked in a week or two) so low for used.

do you guys think i'll be able to get at least $200 out of my 770 once the 800 series releases?

This question has been asked a dozen times here and it always turns into an argument between miners who claim that mining doesn't hurt cards (most of the time they have cards up for sale on this board), and people who are smart enough to not believe them.

I guess no one realizes that this is a troll thread. The OP knows exactly why these cards are being sold by the dozen. Well played OP, well played. :D

I sold my 7950 and made profit and upgraded to the R9-290 .. Bitcoin drove prices up crazy so I sold the 290 for +$200.. I been laying low running a 560GTX SE and now SHTF as it also effects new card prices and I pick a new R9-280 with 3 free games for $209..

Now with a stable brand new (never mined) card I feel that taking a chance on a mined card is worth it to crossfire with it and i'm not worried about Nvidia 800 or AMD 300 cards because the 79xx cards can still run any game with the 3Gb of ram.

I'm personally running a retired mining card. I picked up a 290x for $300 shipped.

For me that was a no brainier. The best card at the time I could get new was a 280x for $300. It is only recently that I'm seeing some 290s touch the $300 price point.

Now of course, you have to use some common sense. I would get a r9 2xx, not a 7xxx. Most warranties that are transferable are 2 years from manufacture. A lot of those warranties on the 7xxx series will be ending in a few months. Also, make sure it has a transferable warranty (i.e. xfx and asus).

even if my 290x dies in a year it will still be under warranty. By the time the warranty does run out (December 2015 worst case scenario), i'll be ready to upgrade. For some people who can drop $600-$700 on a card, than of course they will stay away. But I paid $300 and get the same performance as those who paid $500+.

There are also plenty of 280x (rebranded 7970s) on ebay for ~$170.

Just remember, coin miners usually run their op 24/7 and abuse their hardware.

I have bought quite a few AMD cards or cheap . I am assuming they were all mining cards . Everyone of the cards I have bought are now in systems I built for friends and family. They are all running trouble free and everyone was happy about the price . I warned them about the potential abuse the cards could have gone through . But they were more excited about how cheap they were and being able to get more for less .

I am also running a mining card a MSI R9 290 gaming which I got for $265.00 . The seller was off loading 15 cards and for that price I was willing to take a chance . Other than the card reminding me of my old GTX470 . I am very happy with the purchase .

I'm sure there are quite a few people who did this, but I think the majority of those people unloading 10+ cards had setups like this:

what do setups like these cost? and how fast could a person get it back? is worth the investment? to me thats very qquestionable

at one time it was worth it. I'm too sure about the economics of it though. Google mining farms and look at them on youtube. You'll see plenty of people who did it.

the people that went balls out and got in early made a ton of cash, easily recouped the hardware costs and were making profits pretty damn fast.

The late to the party people that went balls out didn't do as well.

Anyways that goes balls out now is probably not making a smart decision.

It's buyer beware. Some hardware was riden hard and put away dirty. If you buy a cheap, used and abused card you may regret it. Other hardware was taken care of and even though it was ran at nearly 100% for weeks/months on end, it's still in usable condtion. As posted earlier, it's a crapshoot.

I concur with what a few others have said, most of them are parting out mining rigs, just to try and get some ot their money back of what they put in, since its not profitable to mine with gpus anymore. It's either that or some of them are selling to get some cash to put on other things because they have some extra gpus laying around.
