Formula BOINC

Yeah it appears to be so far, but I really will not know on this go around, since I will not be running it a full week to establish a true RAC

For those keeping track Numbers does much better with HT on.

Grandpa....give me your list of projects favor HT and not and I will add it to the all inclusive DC list. And preferably separating each sub project too just in case...

We are now only down 73 points from first place. Keep up the good work gents. :)

To get in the top 10 at primaboinca, we will need ~1.6 million points. This project also has strong potential of being added to the DC-Vault.

Yafu is a multi thread work unit. I haven't ran much there, but we only need ~65k points to get in the top ten there.

Choices choices choices :D

We are now only 64 points away from 1st place in League 2. Keep it up guys. I just bumped my file server another 12 cores and am testing my 7970 in it this weekend. Did a few other minor upgrades and am hoping to get to another 16 core/32 threads at least online for testing. But Father's day apparently means everyone else requiring Father's attention day. That and for some reason people think I should mow the lawn still... The joys of being the adult...

Running Rioja Science and it does better with HT on I get 25% to 30% more PPD with it on than with it off.

I also have Yafu running and it does not seem to matter, but not sure yet. It does use all cores per single WU but runs weird i will use 100% of all cpu's for 25 to 60 sec. then all cpu's will idle from 10 to 90 sec.

Also boinc appears to have a problem with YaFu credit it apears to me that it has a problem with multi threaded apps. http://yafu.myfirewall.org/yafu/forum_thread.php?id=160

Grandpa_01, could you summarize your hyperthreading findings in a single post or new guide? I would really like to know which projects besides LLR (PrimeGrid) benefit from HT off vs. HT on. Thank you!

brilong, thanks for chiming in. I have begun a list in the all inclusive DC List that I will be adding these to as I see people report them. I just haven't had time to comb through the threads looking for past info. I know WCG supposedly favors HT, but I have not done anything official. If someone would like to confirm this, it would be appreciated. I am also looking for info for each sub project because the apps are different.

That was a pretty steep jump. We are not only 49 points away from first place.

We are down to 4 points now I would ventur to say that on the next updat we have a very good chance of being #1 in our dvision :)

Why? Did they step up their production or did you see them comment somewhere?

They moved back into #1 spot, idk if they steeped it up or if it as just a coincidence.

Hmm . . . This seems like it could be fun - never really looked at it much before. Seems like we could maybe make a run at a team or two in Enigma or maybe one in Asteroids. Maybe we could overtake Ukraine with a big push in WCG.

Just have to be careful not to lose a spot somewhere else.

Glancing through the projects, we could still easily move up these projects and they have work available:

Edges - currently 3rd
SAT - currently 28th
BURP - currently 13th
Gerasim - currently 20th
Lattice project - currently 17th
LHC Six Track - currently 30th

SETI and Moo! are GPU capable projects that we could also try. However, SETI would require way too many resources for the little gain it would give. Even Eagle07's 27 Teslas probably wouldn't we worth the effort there. Moo! on the other hand could but it really doesn't like systems with more than one GPU of the same brand within the system. So, you would have to exclude GPU's in those rigs. CPU work could be done but when you compare CPU points to those of GPU's it really feels like a waste even though it is a perception. On a brighter note, if the push on Moo! was done, it would also help push our position at RC5-72 in the DC-Vault. Just make sure to follow the directions I gave in this post: http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1040794811&postcount=1947

We are up to 2nd for Edges. It is probably the biggest jump from 2nd to 1st, but it is small potatoes for the numbers we have been putting up.

SAT- 26th
BURP - 13th
Gerasim - 19th
Lattice - 17
LHC Six Track - 31st (lost a spot)

Just a heads up for anyone wanting to run lattice. You WILL need a 24/7 stable box if you want to attempt it. The WU's take over 3 days to complete on an OC'ed 2600k and they don't bother to do checkpoints. So if you are a day in and your pc shuts down all progress is lost!

I saw someone complaining about it on their forums 2 years ago and it would seem that is still the case... Definitely not something a casual person would want to attempt since all work will be reset if you restart the computer.

EDIT: Update on Lattice. Unfortunately this project doesn't appear to be worth much time. On some of my Windows clients they are approaching a week of working on the same unit. I'm not sure how to tell how much credit it will give but reading from some of the 8 month old posts on their boards it sounds like I should be expecting 1k or so. It's hardly worth the time and effort to attempt the project if the payoff is so low. I'm going to try to watch my Linux boxes as they seem to be a faster at turning around WUs but we'll have to wait and see.

I attempted crunching for the Lattice Project and never completed a work unit, for the reasons you gave. Having WU's that take 3+ days to finish, while having no checkpoints, is ridiculous since it makes running Lattice with multiple projects almost impossible. I gave up and detached all my crunchers from the project.

You can run a virtual machine and have it do snapshots. That is how I recommend running Lattice Project

That's actually a pretty good idea. For right now it doesn't seem that you can get any WUs anyway since I haven't been able to pick up new work. Might be worth another look once work starts flowing again.

Yes...any project with no or little check pointing should be ran in a VM that has snapshots activated. Worst case scenario you start back at the last snapshot. Also, if there is a project that rarely has work, you can have a VM constantly watch for it by only having the one project on there or a list of them that rarely have work. This works good if you set your main client to pause if certain cpu utilization is met. Just a few tips. Finding that right settings is up to the user though. YMMV. Just keep in mind that using GPU in a VM requires some extensive knowledge using Pass through and isn't supported by all VM software. I haven't found it to be worth the hassle.

The team is up to 533 points. Keep up the good work guys.

We are now in the top ten for Collatz. Though it is only worth 1 point, that is an accomplishment from being so far back. Keep up the good work guys.

With a small push we could earn some easy points at Rioja Science, LHC six track (if they can maintain enough work), ibercivis (again if they keep their work up and flowing), Gerasim (which has a BOINCStats challenge in a few days), and EDGES.

If more members attached their Android devices, Macbooks, Lenovo laptops, or HP laptops with the 3d driveguard software, we could make a better dent at Quake Catcher Network.

I have attached my Android tablet and an old HP laptop to QCN. I would also attach my MacBook Pro, but I typically use Bootcamp to run Windows 7 on it, instead of OSX, and it doesn't look like the built-in accelerometer is recognized by Win7.

I attached my two Androids, however it looks like only one is compatible (the other failed with "computation error" so I detached it).

We gained another spot in Collatz, so we are now getting 2 points for that project. We will gain another spot soon. :D

Looks like my attempt to run QCN on my Androids is pretty much a complete failure. Not really sure why though.

They don't do things like other BOINC projects, so don't expect the same behavior. However, I am not sure how they actually do the validating. I know they run a script every week or two to credit though.

Ah, ok. Well then I'll just let it do its thing. Its not like it is hurting the WCG I have running alongside it.
