Last played AC and ACII. I'm thinking about playing AC:IV and trying the series again.

Is it worthwhile to play Brotherhood, Revelations, and ACIII?

Mainly wondering from a time stand point as these I believe these are roughly ~40hour games, which at my current time budgeting for them would take possibly 3-5 weeks each.

That would depend on what you think about the modern timeline aspect of the game.

If you don't care about it, you could probably skip from ACII to Black Flag (although I really liked Brotherhood). Revelations was rather meh imo, and Im apparently the only person who slightly liked AC3 lol.

Brotherhood continues the AC2 story, so only worth it if you care about that. I think it's probably the best game in the series. Revelations ends the AC2 story but I haven't played it. AC3 is garbage and for all practical purposes unconnected with 4, I'd definitely skip it.

I'd say play Brotherhood if you want more of Ezio, or go straight to AC4.

Actually the overall story involving the modern timeline is one thing that interests me about Assassin's Creed.

I'm wondering if the story aspects can just be caught up from reading the wikis or whatnot as well.

But I'm wondering if there are some significant story elements that are better actually seen (or played). For example with ACII the reveal at the end and the Eden element seemed more interesting to discover during play as opposed to reading about it.

I've seen the recap movie in Brotherhood for example and that wouldn't have been helpful at all had I never played ACII.

I remember hearing ACIII wasn't good. What were the complaints/issues with it?

Story-wise, you can just read synopses or even watch YouTube videos of the important cutscenes. While the two spin-offs are connected to AC2 in-game (Ezio's plot), the modern story for both is unique.

AC3 was just kind of boring. The side stories were fun, but the main plot was yawn-worthy. Plus, Connor was the most uninteresting lead from the series in spite of having a good background story. A lot of the mechanics from #4 are in it, but they're just poorly used.

I'd skip straight to #4, but learn the plot to the others any way you can. #4's far and away the best game in the series.

I liked the story and environment of AC1, I thought AC2 was better, but unlike AC1 I never finished AC2, I am also only about half way done with AC4, but never bought AC3. I don't think you need to know much about the story in AC4, there were flashbacks in the game at some point IIRC.

The biggest problem I have with the AC games is that they get boring after a while so I end up shelving them for something else. AC2 I ended up stopping not because of the game, but because I played the PS3 disc version half way or so (rented the game), but bought the Digital version and the saves weren't compatible. So I would have had to start over from scratch and I just said f**k that lol.

3 wasn't that bad IMO, and I thought it had the best feel in terms of overall combat to date.
The story had all the elements to make it interesting and involving, but it was just meh. Dude was rather dull, the best part was playing his father in the beginning IMO.
I only played like 30 mins of 4 so far (Hard to find time...).
Looking into the DLC (Freedom Cry or something like that), I'm thinking it could be a fun/condensed way to enjoy the AC4 mechanics, and have a short campaign. I'm not sure if the story is good though...

My problem with AC3 and AC4 is about 3/4th of the way through I stopped playing.. Not because it wasn't good, not because of glitches.. Because I got completely and utterly bored. It feels like you're doing the same exact thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. I've yet to finish 3 or 4...

Thanks for the thoughts. Will need to digest them and see what to do.

I do have quite a bit of spare time away from home at the moment which is why the online synopsis/videos for story is something I considered.

By the way how does ACIII: Liberation fit into the series? I forgot about this as it was originally for handhelds I believe but seems to have now been ported to other platforms as well.

I admit I had this same feeling with ACI and ACII. ACI since while the basic concept of the game was refreshing at the time it didn't actually have much variety in terms of what to do. ACII was just very massive and large, as such you're bound to get some repetitiveness (I find this occurs with any larger/open type of game really).

This is also why it's somewhat daunting to consider going through 4 of them in a row :p Makes it a bit worse since I want to play through Batman:AO as well, another open platform/stealth/action game.

Black flag is fucking bad ass! Do not wait to play that game. The pirate aspect is so much fun. I almost never played it because I though pirates were lame, but seriously, this game, the way they do pirates, is amazing. For what it is worth I never played ACI or 2 played brotherhood till 3/4ths of the way through played revelation 3/4ths of the way through (my favorite until i played Black flag) Finished acIII (i think that is the One where you are connor the native american) and Played black flag twice.

The best thing about Black flag is the open world has so many different aspects to it that make it such a great game. Boss ship battles, ship to land warfare, deep sea underwater exploration, ship to ship warfare, cavern and island warfare/exploration, and classic city warfare. You pretty much get to do all of this when ever you want, Some aspects don't open up until a little bit of story progression but it is not that big of a deal, because it is handled like the other ac games. So it is expected. Oh yeah there is also hunting on land and in the sea (harpoon fishing). Honestly explaining this makes me want to play this game again.

The story was pretty good too as well. I was never a fan of the "modern time" aspect of the games and how it made me stop playing the past. and considering this game had the least amount of that gave it more appeal to me. I also am fascinated with past civilizations and technologies and black flag tied that aspect in pretty well. To be honest i found myself getting lost in the open world with all the things to do and explore it made the story very fractured in my mind. Plus I will not reveal a funny twist with out a warning but the Big reveal to one of the characters was pretty funny because i never knew it was what it was supposed to be believed. (I know that probably makes no sense)

I would suggest playing AC black flag even before batman AO i could only play for an hour or so before i realized it was just a bad Batman:Arkham city

I didn't think Connor was dull, I just thought he was a whiny bitch.
hahaha. This is why i didn't like acIII connor was a horrible assassin.

I recommend going with AC2, AC2 Brotherhood, AC2 Revelations, & AC4. AC1 & AC3 are lacking the kick that AC2 epitomized so well.

AC: Rev is mostly fan service to give closure to Altair and Ezio’s characters. Which wasn’t that great even for the hardcore fans. Desmond’s part and overall story is pretty boring. Although I could say that for most of Desmond’s scenes throughout the series.

AC2, Brotherhood and AC4 are good though IMO. Yet I still say start with AC4. The ship battles alone are a lot of fun.
