I have the ability to pick up these monitors pretty cheap until I realized they only run 4K at 30hz.

Are there no firmware updates or drivers that take care of this like what happened with the Seiki monitors?

Its an issue with the controller board in the monitor. Dell went with the 30hz one, to either be first to market, or save a few bucks.

Also, Firmware updates or drivers will not give you 60hz @ 4k on a Seiki, it just allows 120hz @ 1080p on the 39" model, instead of frame skipping.

I thought it was specifically the UHD scaler. Older model scalers couldn't do 3840x2160 at 60Hz only 3840x2160 at 30Hz. To overcome this manufacturers used two UHD scalers resulting in the need for MST tiled displays like the Asus PQ321Q and Dell UP2414Q. The other option was for manufacturers to use only one UHD scaler and be limited to 3840x2160 at 30Hz.

Its no wonder that the Dell P2815Q would drop in price because newer models with newer UHD scalers capable of 3840x2160 at 60Hz are already in the market and increasing in number. Also recall that the Asus PQ321Q entered the market at ~$3500 MSRP and can now be had for less (~$2600 new and less then ~$2000 used). It makes sense that any model with the older UHD scalers would drop in price because even the more expensive models are being supplanted.

It's kinda bananas that a 32" PC monitor with crap tiled 4K displays are selling for $3k while in that price range legit HDMI 2.0 high end TVs are already available at that price. The high end PC monitor market just has too low volume I suppose.
