samsung 512GB 840 pro ssd $359

Looking at reviews on Newegg's site itself (which this is for some reason sold on Ebay on behalf of, suspicious), it seems these have an unusual (for SSD's) early premature failure rate. I would be careful about leaving good feedback right away and doing some strenuous testing upon receipt.

Also, Amazon has it for just 10$ more... well without tax; but there are other sellers that probably won't have tax listed on there for a comparable price.

Considering I doubt that these have a comparable return policy when bought on Ebay, it might be recommendable. I kind of expected these 840 Pro's to have 5 star reliability at all points, so seeing that kind of a failure rate is surprising (at least on newegg). Might just be a lack of samples.

Samsung SSD prices are probably dropping because Crucial got aggressive. The Crucial MX100 512GB is $219 on amazon. Is the Samsung Pro 512GB faster enough to justify the $140 premium?

Personally I don't think any of the high end drives are worth their premium. I have a computer with an old slow 64gb kingston value (not the premium fast ones) ssd, and in windows (not benchmarks) it honestly seems exactly the same as a premium ssd. So for me I'm going for a reliable company and dollar per gigabyte. You do a lot of file transfers or benchmarks then maybe its worth it.

The Crucial MX100 when it was at 199 for 512 was probably the absolute best $/gb SSD deal that's been up yet. And it's one of Crucial's newer ones, which is probably better than the M500. I'm not sure what the 840 pros have that supposedly justifies their price premiums. I think they have faster transfer rates and a higher warranty. Supposedly more reliable, but I don't think that's even an issue anymore. Maybe a few more features better for enterprise I guess? I think they might be outdated relics at this time, what with all of the other options out there now.

In real world performance you won't notice much. Just in benchmarks you would see a slight difference. Even the SanDisk Extreme II 480GB, after it's price increase since it's drop (was at about $230), is still probably a better value drive than the PRO because they really compete with each other and yet the Extreme II is a lot cheaper.

The MX100 is an 'okay' drive, so sayeth the bible of HD review sites: http://www.storagereview.com/crucial_mx100_ssd_review

It is faster than the M500, but the M500's an 'old' drive at this point.
