Is there a go-to model that is recommended here? Thanks.

Look HGST. This is the brand for Hitachi drives that are being manufactured after the WDC purchase of Hitachi's storage division.

Although with any drive you have to remember that there is a ballpark 2% to 10% annual failure rate for drives over their 5 year expected lifetimes even if you don't subject it to extreme conditions. So remember to always backup the data you can not risk losing.

I picked up 8x4TB HGST drives (the desktop class ones). Ran them all through a several day read/write test and they all passed. Have had them in a ZFS array for several months with no errors so far.

So, anecdotally, I would also recommend HGST.

+1 on HGST Have 4 deskstar 2tb 7200rpm in a raid5 array for filesharing and media streaming. Have had them on for 3 years now with no issues.

HGST Deskstar is great, their Ultrastar is even better. WD Black is also good.

I use the Samsungs since I rage-quit Seagate. They work great. If you look up previous threads of mine you can see how long that has been going on, without any problems (and I closely watch SMART and I scrub my raids).

Doesn't Seagate Manufacturer Samsung hard drives (if they are still in production)? I mean Seagate purchased Samsing's hard drive division a few years back.

So I bought the UltraStar 2TB version. This thing appears to be a pile of crap. Load times are extremely slow and the whole system will hang while the platter spools up. I bought a second thinking the first was defective and have the same issue. I don't have it in power saving mode. Is there some other setting i need to change?

Please make very sure that the SATA data cable is plugged all the way onto the motherboard, and that the SATA power cable is plugged all the way in on the PSU end if it's a modular PSU. The process of removing and adding HDDs can make those cables wiggle just a bit loose on the other end, which can cause that sort of problem and explain why the issue happened to two HDDs in a row.

Which SATA ports do you have the drives plugged into? Intel Sata6, Intel Sata3, or ASMedia Sata6? What OS? Did you load most up to date drivers or go with what Windows (assuming that's your OS) loaded for you? Have you run any kind of benchmarks on the drives? Do you have them in a Raid config or JBOD?
