Washington Post article on the 2.4 billion hours spent watching E Sports. This was first reported on the IHS Technology website.

Biggest markets are China, USA, and South Korea.

300 million in advertising will be generated.

More people (32 million) watched the League of Legends final match than the World Series final game. Source: Daily Dot.

PewDiePie makes $140,000 - $1,400,000 per month just off the ad revenue on his Youtube channel. He has nearly two times the subscribers than Rihanna. Source is The Atlantic.

None of these articles touch on what Twitch.TV streamers make. I've watched $100,000 donations go to a single streamer.

So how many of you chose the wrong field coming out of college? :)

I bet a lot of people who play DOTA and LOL want to be like the top guys get into a club and get paid for playing video games...
Kinda like being a comic book artists for the now defunct Marvel comics..in the 90s

It always makes me sick (read: jealous :p) when I see stories like this. I wish I could go back in time to get stuff out there when Youtube is on its meteoric rise. I think it would be too hard for me to start nowadays. I don't consider myself very interesting or creative in a way to stand out and get the kind of attention required to make that kind of money. But man, I would love to get paid solely for playing games for a living.

I don't get it. I'd rather play games than watch them. After about five minutes watching I typically think to myself "I could go play games myself" and that's what I usually do.

Coming from someone who is TRYING to get into the youtube market now (already a partner), its incredibly difficult because there are SO MANY people already doing many things that to break into the market, you truly have to do something more remarkable than everyone else to even get noticed.

Very interesting market for esports emerging... a real global market as you can see with Riot working their League of Legends game in many continents and able to broadcast their games GLOBALLY in real-time from all locations. Whereas baseball world series becomes more a local sport with the word "world" tacked on to it.

I wonder if it could not be much more than that without our little cheating problem.
To not count the editorial that does not follow the market stream. That could not follow...

Ditto.

Only time I watch someone else is either when I'm at a family members house...or if I'm debating buying a game. Or if I'm gawdawful bored waiting for a game download that has DL servers that are getting hammered.

I just don't understand the PewDiePie thing... he seems to be intentionally annoying, and yet people watch. I assumed he was just buying subscribers like many of the popular ones do by saying comment and you can win $500 and what not.

He did that a long time ago to build up the subscriber base he has today, now he just does crap stuff and gets paid crap tons of cash. I would take Freddie Wong over PewDiePie simply due to quality content. PDP updates once or twice a day, but its all crap, FW updates once a week, but u get quality stuff.

Yep. I'll watch some online game reviews to see if I might be interested in a particular game I'm on the fence about. Or watch some gameplay video on Youtube or whatever. But it doesn't typically take me long to figure out what I want.

Back in the day I used to just buy games without too much thought with information gathered before release. I've been burned by too many titles to do that anymore.

I really enjoy watching the fighting game tournament streams. While I could certainly play myself, there's no way I can play that well. It's like watching the UFC and then wanting to go and fight in the backyard. I think it's entertaining to see what the best players can do. That said, I would certainly get bored watching certain genres.

I admit I watched something from PewDiePie once for 30 seconds before closing it and never coming back to his page again .

I actually watched one of his videos today just to remind myself why I disliked him so much, lol.

His voice seems very annoying. But he seems to release a lot of content, which is why it seems people like his channel.

I watch a lot of competitive MTG matches because I play competitively and study other peoples play styles and practices. I imagine the same is for DOTA and LOL but honestly those games just bore the shit out of me. It's always these 45 minute matches that once someone makes a mistake disconnects whatever it sways to one side and its just people losing for 20 minutes. Additionally people who play those games have the worst manners I've ever experienced in a game. I quit because I don't like spending my free time being called a fa$$$ for an hour at a go.

I used to play CS etc competitively and yeah there's jerks but I don't recall anyone getting banned for life for jerking off on camera or whatever creepy shit the DOTA pros are getting banned for this week. Fucking savages.

I watch Mechwarrior online matches on twitch because I get tired of watching Disney movies all evening. So kids watch what they like and I watch what I want until bed time when I can go play.

Is it weird/strange/bad that this is the first time for me to ever hear of PewDiePie? I don't know how he could have about 27.5 million subcribers without me knowing. Is that number real or is that a joke?

Numbers need context, 27.5m might seem like a large number but in what context?

Youtube has roughly 1 billion users and global internet usage is at over 2.75 billion. Percentage wise 27.5m is rather small.

For example some more context for some of the numbers -
300 million in advertising will be generated.

As a comparison to see how far the gap is still with traditional sports, this years Superbowl (1 event) generated $240m USD in advertising revenue from the US market.

In this case you're using global viewership numbers (particularly bolstered by China) across all accessible mediums versus just the US TV viewing numbers. In regards to China specifically the final game of the CBA finals had a viewership of 54 million in China. For those wondering what the CBA even is, it is is the Chinese Basketball Association.

Baseball television viewership is also on a significant decline in the US since the 80/90s.

Agreed.

I only watched twitch when I wanted to watch an SC2 Pro play, also I would watch SC2 tournaments. Also I'd watch it to see gameplay of games that I might be interested in. So there's some good reason behind it (learning the game better and for entertainment purposes). But, I don't play SC2 as much anymore so I have pretty much stopped watching twitch completely.

I was watching E3 on Twitch yesterday, and there were 300,000+ people in one channel watching along with me.

I imagine this is the exact same thing people said when traditional sports first hit TV.

^ That's a good way to look at it. You really can get into it like you can with sports (non e-sports). I would talk about starcraft in the same way people would talk about football/basketball. You have your favorite teams, players, and the competitiveness is there too.

Markiplier is the only person worth watching on YouTube in my opinion. He's hilarious, especially his oculus rift horror games.

He needs to be hit by a bus and killed. I watched 1 video for about a minute and I wished I could do extremely violent things to that annoying twig, and that was before I knew how much he money he made off idiots that think that shit is entertaining. I think i read somewhere that he made 4 million last year. 4 FUCKING MILLION DOLLARS, wtf is wrong with people supporting this madness. I'm guessing there's a lot of 13 year old girls masterbating to videos of him around the world.

For me watching tournaments (people playing games on a world class level) is a very enjoyable. Though lately I only watch GSL.
