Western Digital 4TB Red WD40EFRX - $140

Oh man. I hope it still there when I get home tonight, cause dibs take 4.

some nice asshole would put on a sale after i bought what i was looking for.

great deal, i believe these would be the same or similar class as the hitachi quiet drives. i think the desk star pros are better but this price is good.

$20 cheaper but then I would have to mix drives. Is it worth it?

Hmm, looks interesting, which ones are better though, these WD Red or the HGST 4TB Deskstar Coolspin?

In for one...this will more than double my almost-full HTPC storage.

How is red compared to black? I would say my usage would be mid-high i/o 24/7.

I kinda like these but losing a 4GB drive would be a big hit if there was a lot on it. Not sure I like anything over 2GB and even that's a press for home use

So buy 2 and do RAID. :p

Anyone's actually shipped yet? I guess they are backed up having sold so many...

So my order details say UPS Ground as the shipping type, but there is no tracking information of any kind, or even anything saying that it actually did ship.

Estimated delivery is June 11 - June 17. I guess we'll see.

Has anyone else gotten any information?

Nothing yet. I am always skeptical of sales like this...doubtful that they actually had 1,400 units in stock in a warehouse somewhere.

Just got shipment notification. Spoke a bit too soon I guess, but I am used to sellers shipping the same or next business day.

Just got mine today. They did a pretty bad job of packaging...it was basically a drive sealed in the anti-static bag, floating around in a 8" cube box with some air bags. I could hear/feel the drive rolling around in the bottom when I got it.

I'll pop it in and test it but it wouldn't terribly surprise me if it was fucked.

Exact same situation and concern. There's always a catch isn't there when it seems too good to be true. How difficult is it to ship it in a box?? I guess they will have 1,400 angry customers.

Mine wasn't even in a box. Was inside a thick layer of bubble wrap inside of a bubble envelope.

What do you use to thoroughly test it other than full sector scans? WD diagnostic tool?

Not sure yet, I still need to pop it in my HTPC. I put it in a USB dock and it seemed like it was working fine, but I will definitely test it further.

Yours at least looks like they tried to wrap it in the bubble wrap. Mine was just rolling around in the bottom of the box with all the air packs loose on top.

Yeah, but I'm still concerned. It was nicely sealed inside that 1" thick bubble but it would have been better if it came in a box and not in a large loose bubble envelope.

My concern is because I'm putting lots of very valuable data on the drive. As such, I'd much rather pay $35 more for peace of mind. What's another $35 over the many years this drive should work. Just my 2 cents. Not sure yet, on the fence about testing or returning and ordering from someone who knows how to properly ship hard drives.

Just a quick update: Got the drive installed in my HTPC and have copied over 500 GB to it so far with no issues. Ran some tests on it as well and no issues, so I guess it's fine. Doesn't excuse the seller's piss-poor shipping, but at least the drive is fine.

I mean, these drives are built to take shocks of 250Gs when non-operating, so I'm not that worried.

I had (4) 3 TB reds shit the bed in one year, all at different times. All the failed drives started making faint clicking sounds and smart indicated read errors under the alarm threshold. There is at least two firmwares since some of the replacement drives had the same model number and others that a different one. Make frequent backups or carry a shelf-spare if they are in an array.

Drives are not as fragile as you all seem to think. That bubble wrap is more than enough even if the drive is not firmly held in place inside the carton.

Hell I ship drives wrapped in newspaper until they can no longer move around in a small priority flat rate box, been doing it like this for years, so far no problems.

Has anybody verified whether the warranty is valid from this seller?

what method are you guys using to test these drives? I will most likely be putting these into an array in the next month but want to go ahead and run full tests on them as soon as they arrive

Yeah, except in my case the drive was just sliding around in the bottom of the box with a few air packs on top. There weren't enough packs to actually hold the drive in place, nor were there packs surrounding the drive to keep it from hitting the side of the box repeatedly. If the box got kicked/thrown/etc, it's very likely that all of that force could have gone directly into the drive.

However, I agree, they can take a LOT of punishment when not in operation. So far I can't find any issues with mine (have copied over 2 TB to it so far).

Should be, it's a brand new sealed OEM drive...I don't see why it wouldn't have full warranty.

I just used the WD testing utilities, which have a Quick and a Full scan. Also shows SMART data which isn't always that helpful, but still.

I bought 2x of these but mine were not so lucky to be shipped nicely.

Sent mine back, already got my refund.
From the look of the box and the deflated baggies, I figured UPS was enjoying World Cup action during their off minutes. The horrific part was when I picked it up at more door and the first sound heard was a "ka-thk" sound. One hdd falling on top of the other while shifting .

Yeah, I left neutral feedback and noted the terrible (and slow) shipping practices. Definitely leave feedback...I would probably even go negative in your case, that is ridiculous.

badblocks is your friend.

Looked up my serial number and shows a full 3 years of warranty

Wow, I guess I got lucky in that mine was shipped in the protective bubble. Definitely would be wary when the anti-static bag shows signs of holes or punctures from the PCB.
