GOG.com will offer DRM-free online gaming with its new service, GOG Galaxy, the company announced today during a livestream.

This "optional client" will allow gamers to play games without needing to connect to the internet.

"We believe gamers deserve a better experience," the trailer's narrator said.

"With GOG Galaxy, your game will always launch. No online activation required ... Being online will always be optional."

If players wish to play online with friends, they'll need to connect; sharing achievements online with friends will also require a profile. GOG Galaxy will also include a cross-play feature that allows them to game with friends who have titles on other online venues.

Check out the trailer above for more on the service. More news on the service is expected this year, and those interested can sign up on the service's website to participate in The Witcher Adventure Game's closed multiplayer beta.

I wish CD:pR success with this, one of the last good guy game developers, but the whole "no-DRM" thing doesn't really gun my engine - I rather have all my games in one place if it comes down to a choice between the two. Still, competition and competing marketplaces are good for PC gaming overall.

Been waiting for something like this. I like having a client for my game purchases.

I hope they go down the right integration path with this. If, beyond having an 'optional client', they can build open platforms for in-game overlays, chat (leveraging existing protocols there) and achievements, they could have something interesting.

Otherwise, a "client you can use if you want with its own vendor-specific profile" isn't very exciting. At worst, it's kind of problematic. My preference would be for more open systems any other client can leverage and fewer proprietary clients — even those that are optional.

I am on a wait and see on this one. I guess I can see them needing one, but overall, I am a download the installer and data person. Every game I bought from GoG or Humble that is DRM Free is on my file server. I even buy games I already own on Steam via GoG or Humble so I have both the client option and DRM-Free installer available to me if available.

I agree though the name Galaxy might give them trouble with Samsung.

I could buy into something like this if it means launching my games without the client on and only use the client to update games. Requiring you to be online to turn it offline and the need to leave the client on is so last decade.

I'm sure Samsung has the name Galaxy trademarked for their hardware. Using GOG Galaxy for a program that has a different purpose than anything Samsung is doing should be fine..

Interesting. I was just wondering to myself yesterday when GOG would put forth a Steam competitor.

Indeed. I can't imagine anyone downloading the FREE software portal and thinking they are somehow buying a Samsung phone or tablet.
