What's the smallest screen in inches I can get that will do 1080p?

Is it possible to get such a monitor non-wide screen?

I need a small monitor (current one is 17 inches) for my cramped desk.

Thanks for your advice :)

You can certainly get 17" or 19" 5:4 monitors that do 1280x1024. I'm not so sure 1080p would be so important, unless you plan to watch movies on the monitor. And since it's so small, I am guessing you probably won't be watching many movies on it to begin with.
Both NEC and Eizo have decent monitors at that size... NEC being a lot cheaper, and some are IPS.

There are also 21.5" IPS, 16:9 1080p monitors out there, but not sure if that is too big for your desk or not.

1080p and non widescreen doesn't exist. 1080p = widescreen, unless you have some janky none square pixels that make everything look squished.

Yeah, am guessing he just figured 1080p is the 'standard' and didn't take into account aspect ratio. Or he needs that res for gaming or movie watching. But yep, it won't come in non-widescreen flavors.

You can get 1200p in non-widescreen, but it'll be somewhat a pain to find and pricey. You just get black bars due to the extra pixels. They would be 20" or 21.3". Just mentioning it if the OP wants non-widescreen as a requirement, yet wants the extra pixels too.

I've made 2 of these in the past, using these controller kits (not this *exactly*, but from this Ebay seller)

You order a separate LED LCD panel 15.6" or 17" with 1080p res, and tell NJYTOUCH the LCD part number, They tailor the LCD controller's firmware for your LCD. Once you get it in, all you have to do is mount it - This works really well if you're handy and have a dead laptop or two. It's a easy as mounting the LCD on hinges / bezel, and mounting the hinges on a sanded and painted block of wood. The controllers run on 12V, so if you're super handy, you can make your own wire and run it from your PC's PS using an E-SATA power connector.

I''ve seen someone use an ipad retina screen before as a computer monitor. 9.7" 2048x1536

Thanks folks for explaining my options, I appreciate it. It looks like my options are very limited unless I want to buy a widescreen, and one considerably larger than my current 17" square screen.

I keep hearing 1080p is better for gaming and watching vids, hence my desire to obtain it.

go led never look back 21.5 is prefect anything larger sucks unless you just use it for gaming.
Untill a new screen technology exists that doesn't harm a persons eyes...I use 24" and 27" for gaming but can't stand it for web surfing.

What would it cost to have a small screen like this built? I need a small 7 to 9" 16:9 screen that I can hook up to a 980 ti via display port or hdmi or dvi. Thanks for any help you can offer.

You'd probably better off buying one, they can be found easily online, found a 1080p 7" with hdmi for $185 on amazon. Cheaper if your order one direct from china.

buy adapter, buy ipod or LCD panel, mod that shit.... why?! he asked for monitor suggestions, not a weekend project cobbling shit together. so far munkle has the best options.

KISS!

pendragon1 They barely even make 15.6" 1080p panels, nevermind smaller ones; but they do make much smaller panels with even greater resolution, and LCD controllers which are known compatible and work great (which is what OP had originally asked me about).

you were responding to Manny, who thread jacked.
I was responding to the OP, Wolfdale75.
