Hello,

I am looking to put together a new box, primarily to run Plex, along with Sickbeard / NZBDrone, and Sabnzbd or comparable NZB client. I would be starting from scratch, needing everything except a monitor and the HDD's.

Low power would be nice, but not essential. I don't need anything beyond the most basic video card, preferably onboard. It does not need to be particularly quiet, as it'll be off in a corner by itself. It'll be on a wired 1 GB connection, feeding 3 x Roku 3 units, a tablet, two phones via Plex, and a laptop. Despite all these devices, there will not be more then two streams needing to be transcoded at a time, but I'd like to be able to handle a minimum of 4 x 1080 streams for futureproofing.

Aiming to spend ~$550 CAD (~$510 USD) for CPU, Mobo, ram, power supply, and case. I already have some 3 and 4 TB WD Red drives and a small SSD for this project. Anything beyond this, and I might just buy a 4 bay Synology and transcode using my laptop.

Just as an example, I was looking at an AMD A10-6800K for $130 CAD, but know nothing about current AMD products outside of their video cards.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

Solid start so far with that list. PSU wise, I'd aim for the Corsair CX500 or the Seasonic SSR-450RM.

I am close to settling on the following, any suggestions?

Intel Core i3-4360

Mushkin 2 x 4 GB 1600 ram

Corsair Carbide 200R case I'll be using a couple 5.25 to 3.5 adaps to allow for more HDD's if needed.

ASUS H87M-E mATX LGA1150 H87 DDR3 Motherboard
That CPU is not a good choice in any way. It's a Core i3 that costs $175 that doesn't offer anything that justifies the extra costs over the $128 Core i3 4130. Especially considering that the quad-core Core i5 4430 is only $15 CAD more. So yeah, that CPU is not a good choice at all.

With that said, I would really reconsider going AMD in this case: The AMD setup you originally had could support 8 hard drives right off the bat whereas that Intel setup only has six SATA ports.

As for the case, I'd spend the extra $10 for the NZXT Source 210 Elite since it can hold 8 hard drives as is:

COmbined with a 4in3 module and you're looking at 12 hard drives total.
