After disclosing its workforce diversity data, Google says it is working on recruiting more women and minorities in the future.

“We’re not where we want to be when it comes to diversity,” Laszlo Bock, Google’s senior vice president of “people operations,” told the NewsHour in a statement prior to a broadcast interview Wednesday. “It is hard to address these kinds of challenges if you’re not prepared to discuss them openly, and with the facts. All our diversity efforts, including going public with these numbers, are designed to ensure Google recruits and retain many more women and minorities in the future.”

Who the hell cares as long as the person can do the job well. (Notice I am not a politically correct advocate?)

When are the NFL and NBA going to finally embrace diversity? There are no women on their teams, and black males, only 6% of the population, are grossly overrepresented in those organizations.

Forced diversity is forced. This is the same issue with Wheel of Fortune. (If that was the game that had the issue.)

Google employ the people based on skillset, not because of colour.

If only white males are the ones that fit the bill, so be it.

I would love if we had 50% women working here too but the number of female network engineers I have come across in the past 15 years can be counted on a hand or two.

It's not the white males who are taking it all, it's the asians. White people are 78% of the population and 61% of Google. We had the same "problem" at my school, and it's not a real problem. Hire whoever can do the work and racist rabble rousers can go yell at a wall.

Reasons why there are so many more men than women working in the tech sector:

1) On average, men working in tech don't have good hygiene and scare all the women away.
2) On average, men can sit and stare at a computer screen for much longer than a women can.
3) The ratio of nerds that are men are much greater than women.

In order words, this is not news.

Although I am not in favor of government interference and I dislike quotas intensely, there is a certain wisdom to diversity (which is why most companies embrace it at some level) ... people from different backgrounds bring different perspectives to problems ... this can be true if it is male vs female or Caucasian vs non-Caucasian or wealthy vs poor

The range of people who can "do the job" is often quite wide ... choosing a mix of people from within that range is generally beneficial and gives you a stronger mix than if you only pick from the top (expensive) or bottom (fewer high achievers) or middle ;)

Hopefully this will open the door to the next big diversity gap (people with degrees vs the non-degree people) ... I would like to see more companies embrace apprenticeship programs in place of college or recruit former military folks rather than moving in lock step support of our liberal and ineffective higher education system in the USA

It's nice to see Asian males now lumped in with "evil" white males.

It never ceases to amaze me that liberals simultaneously claim businesses are greedy and only interested in profit, yet claim they make hiring choices based on race, rather than picking the most qualified (profitable) candidates.

my only complaint about it is there appears to be a shortage of asian females

;>)

Yup... It's such a terrible issue to end up with an uneven hiring group.

Rather than hire the person who is better qualified, will fit better into the current environment, let's hire someone because of their race or gender... (The most PC correct thing to do!)

Tech support is the most obvious example to pick on. If you can find a minority female who loves to play video games, spend their free time working on computers, and can still do the job description while being able to lift 50 pounds then more power to you. (Printers, desktops, servers, battery backup equipment) They don't necessarily need to have those traits but if 3 out of 4 people in your department are all into the same things it kind of makes the other one an outcast and it's not going to be as enjoyable for them to work there. (They'll probably just end up leaving anyway or it will cause more problems for HR if you try to put someone in a role they don't fit)

Good, because its so annoying when a company just concentrates on hiring the most qualified candidates instead of insuring they have a native american, black female, cross-dressing Filipino, and lesbian aborigine midget in their rainbow lineup.

Fact is, certain industries tend to attract a certain segment, and with Google it wouldn't be surprising if you have a bunch of nerdy white and asian males dominating the ranks. As long as they are the most qualified people, this isn't a problem. We don't complain that there aren't enough white and asian guys in the NBA do we?

Can we see HardOCP's diversity chart please?

If you're going to judge Google, we should be allowed to judge you.

oh dear. what if the stastics/data say that the women and minorities just did not qualfiy... yes folks lets lower the fucking bar....google don't lower bar raise it. By hiring more based on sex and or race welcome to breaking the law..

Its pretty sad that companies even need to keep "diversity records". It simply means those qualifies to do a job will passed on while those less qualified will get the job simply based on race/gender/religion/insert any thing else

I honestly think that if you look at the qualifications for this job, the people with proper education and credentials probably have a similar ratio to this employment graph.

I can't imagine that there are enough Non-Asian and Non-Caucasian women with the proper education/experience to make a sizeable difference to this graph. I may be wrong but this is just my opinion.

It doesn't really amaze me that people like you manage to turn everything into an asinine rant about liberals.

This is just saying that white and Asian males are generally the best in tech. Next.

Or maybe they don't look hard enough ... they could look at bringing more workers in on H1B visas (I know this is controversial with some folks but it does help build diversity and capture qualified people who might otherwise support their home country corporations instead of the USA multi-national corporations)

They could also hire more managers with different qualifications since I often see technical folks complaining about being forced into the management path ... one of my best managers was a Psych major with no technical degree ... he didn't try to micromanage my activities (like engineers were more likely to do) and he trusted MY technical judgement

Having more diversity in the management chain (especially executive leaders) almost always benefits a corporation (look at exceptional CEOs like Indra Nooyi) ;)

It's your ideology that looks at the makeup of an organization, determines that it's "racist" or "sexist" if the numbers don't reflect the demographic makeup of the country, and INSIST that it be "corrected" without regard to qualifications.

I know it's humiliating to see this brought into the clear light of day, but you OWN IT.

On average, if a worman is half way good looking, doesn't smell and fixes up even a little, the men in tech around her will become like drone bees serving a queen. So women don't have to try is they don't want to.

Go look at an advanced CS/CE class or program at ANY uni. in the U.S. and you will see numbers that are even "worse" than Google's numbers for their tech category. The fact that they managed to find so many women tech workers (17%! holy cow) is freaking amazing.

Anyone consider that whites are not a majority in California?

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Latinos-set-to-surpass-whites-in-California-in-5146876.php

But seriously who cares, is there evidence of them hiring a less qualified person because of the color of their skin? That's the only time I'd think there might be a problem.

Is there evidence that they aren't already hiring the most qualified?? Is Google just irrational, preferring to indulge their racism and sexism in their hiring policies at the cost of not getting the best candidates for the job?

As long as there is no discrimination I think forcing diversity is stupid. People who have proper qualifications for the job should be given the job plain and simple. Am I a "minority" in thinking this is the best approach?

Who the hell cares as long as the person can do the job well. (Notice I am not a politically correct advocate?)

Ya all this politically correct crap is getting ridiculous. Hire the best person who applied for the job skin color or gender should never factor into it.

This is just saying that white and Asian males are generally the best in tech. Next.

There is a certain assumption implied here that there is only one best person for the job, which isn't always true ... since we rarely see a role for the individual contributor anymore in the modern workforce you have to look at a wide range of non-technical skills of workers as well (how they handle conflict, how they work with others, how they handle adversity and difficult working environments, how willing they are to support the corporate culture and requirements, etc) ... this is why most companies support the use of behavioral interviewing now to weed out people that might have the technical skills but lack the other skills/behaviors necessary to work in the team based cross-site multi-functional project world that exists in most corporations ... not all of these people will be of universal cultural backgrounds (unless you artificially make it that way yourself) ;)

That said, it might be more cultural that Google is primarily white males ... Google does expect (rightfully so) that you commit yourself completely to their projects (this can result in long hours and very antagonistic project reviews, from what I have heard) ... women, in particular, might not be in favor of working for a company with such a skewed balance towards work instead of life ... most white males (especially the younger ones) don't care about work-life balance as much (as long as they are adequately compensated for it)

I was going to say this.

I hate reading stats like this. What companies will do to try get equality in the work place. When it means nothing as long as the job is performed.

Sometimes you're looking at a selection of candidates who are all approximately equivalent in their qualifications and you just have to pick one. People have an unconscious bias to pick people that they perceive as being similar to themselves. It's usually better to diversify your employs though. You get better results from people who come from different backgrounds all working together. It's gives you a better chance for someone to come up with a solution outside of what you and your other employs might come up with.

That being said, diversity is not race or ethnicity. Diversity is something unique to every individual, based on their unique experiences. Race and ethnicity can give you hints about a persons potential diversity, but it's a bad idea to hire blindly based on those assumptions.

People get so caught up in this kind of thing. The concern and red flags should be going up ONLY for things that are happening to PREVENT hiring or retaining due to race or gender. To even consider someone's race or gender in the equation of hiring IS, by definition, racist or sexist. Even if it's FOR increasing the minorities, it's still choosing someone based ethnics or gender, and not sole on merit!

Just because the discrimination isn't pro-white-male doesn't mean it isn't discrimination! If it's not based on merit alone, how is it NOT discrimination?!

More diverse workplace is a sign of a much healthier company.

You would think, but not always. I have experienced multiple examples where diverse workplaces have more communication problems and dysfunction. Biggest problem is that "high school" groups form and generate communication within only that group. When it comes to group to group sharing, breakdown.

I see it everyday. It's not really a racial deal either (some are, sure). Some cultures are quiet/reserved and others are loud and aggressive. It's a matter of comfort or fear versus gender/race/creed.

I hate hearing about this diversity crap.
How about you employ someone because they can do the job?
If you start using race as deciding factor for employ-ability then youre asking for a world of hurt
This political correct sh*t is getting out of hand

Unless your definition of merit is too narrow ;) ... Google produces products for a worldwide audience and consumption ... it doesn't hurt for them to have an employee base that gives them insight into what that audience wants and needs ... that said, a company like Google will be more of a meat grinder and because of that it might limit their appeal to certain groups (young white males and Asians don't care as much about work life balance or family requirements as other groups may so that may skew their employee base towards those groups)

Vast amounts of research has been done on why women are not a common sight in tech, and it has nothing to do with all of the things it is blamed on.

I find it a little surprising that Asians is only 30%. especially when you consider that includes South Asians. In one IT company I used to deal with it must have been at least 40% South Asians and then the rest.
