KB2919355 installed fine on my two laptops but on my Windows 8.1 desktop it just refuses to do so. The strange thing is that the Windows Update error code I get isn't consistent. Sometimes it installs fine but then reverts during reboot (error E0000100), other times it'll log error 80246007, 80070002 or 80248007.

I've tried doing an sfc /scannow run, which works fine, I've tried renaming/deleting the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, I've also tried doing DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth as suggested on numerous forums, but I just get this error when doing that so I'm stuck:

Code:
Error: 0x800f0906

The source files could not be downloaded.

What can I try next?

if i remember correctly when says couldn't be downloaded it's too much load on the microsoft server.
They recommand trying off peak hours.... blah blah blah.
IF it doesn't work you can try and repair the windows update. Which might work (search troubleshooting) fix problems with windows explorer. Then run /dism with /checkhealth and /Restorehealth after.

If the image still won't download fix, next they recommand doing windows restore before the windows update but thats unlikely to work. zzz , windows refresh if that fails. (nope)

Whats more likely to fix the problem is if you have the windows 8.1 cd/ usb you can install with updates or try a repair without losing anything. This is the most likely way to fix the problem. So you d have to download the iso if you went through the store.

Very annoying as it's happened to my laptop. (it works perfectly... just updates that are fubar).

w8.1 image messed up by a windows update x.x. windows store update for crucial update is dumb.

anways hope u get it fixed and don t have to reinstall. (tired of running scans )

This link talks about a completely different problem, but there is some good troubleshooting steps that might help you figure out what is going on.

I pulled the download from MSDN as soon as it was available and it came down as 5 updates. There was a link in the download that had a recommended order to do the install:

Code:
Recommended Install Order
1. KB2919442
2. KB2919355
3. KB2932046
4. KB2937592
5. KB2938439
6. KB2949621

Maybe make sure you've got 2919442 installed first?

I have tried to install KB2919355 manually and that download includes all of the prerequisite updates. When I try to install all of those other updates they just say they're already installed, so that isn't the problem unfortunately. The servers can't be busy either because I've tried the DISM thing about once a week since the update came out.

However, that link does mention something that might be worth looking into. I don't think I've changed ProfilesDirectory but I do have a secondary HDD for storage. I wonder if I ever moved my "official" Downloads folder to that drive or something, which might be breaking things. Even if I can't see anything out of the ordinary, I guess I could try unplugging the drive, updating, and plugging it back in and seeing if it installs that way.

Also, KB2961851 doesn't supersede KB2919355 at all. The former is an IE11 fix, the latter is a 600+ MB major update for Windows 8.1

Your right, it superseded 2964444. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=2964444 Got my patches confused.

I know one thing this update has about made my laptop unusable twice. It keeps trying to install then fails and wants to reboot\ boot loop. I just system restore before the update. I need to see if there is a setting to turn off the automatic reboot \ install update feature. Being in the middle of something and having it just shut down on you even though it warns you is stupid!

I am going to try some of the fixes you all have posted above and hope they work.

Thanks!

Well removing my HDD didn't help. Still can't install it, which means I can't install any more Windows Updates either.

What else can I try besides a total Windows reinstall?

Never mind, I managed to fix the problem by doing an in-place install of Windows 8.1, then installing all available updates, then installing KB2919355, then again installing all available updates. All of my programs and settings appear in-tact so got there in the end I guess!

After KB2969339 update on 6/25/2014 , kb2919355 finaly installed successfully on it's own. Took microsoft awhile to fix. Gonna check the dism to see if everything is fine.

You should never have to reinstall on an update :p
