Hi,
Been a very long time since I posted here. The system I am running is in my sig. I have a pair of Intel X-25M 80 gb SSD Raid 0. So my question is with the new SSD's is it worth running a pair in raid 0 now a days? I am in the process of building a new system

Intel 4470k
Asus Z97 Sabertooth Tuff
32 gig ram haven't decided on which to buy yet.
SSD waiting for info.

Is it for "using" or benchmarking? If using for real-world stuff, then no it's not worth it to run 2 SSD's in RAID0, as your real-world performance differences are unnoticeable (i.e Internet anything, office stuff, playing games). So for example, a single larger 512GB Samsung SSD is going to perform just as well as 2 256GB Samsungs SSD's in RAID0 in most normal real-world usage scenarios and save you setup and failure headaches. A single SSD won't give you better benchmark numbers, but benchmarks don't reflect real-world normal usage either.

If you do like posting big benchmark numbers, then two RAID0 SSD's will still give you better numbers, but as I mentioned, you won't be able to tell the difference except in very specific usage models.

The old system I am using now is been running for almost 5 years with a pair of intel x25 80 gig in raid and not once have I had a problem. I love how fast it boots in raid. I only run the os on the ssd's. I have about 7 tb of hard drive space I install my games and anything else.

Just get a single 250GB or 512GB Samsung EVO or Crucial M500/M550 (Crucials slightly smaller). You will not notice the difference in raid0 especially booting because raid0 only benefits reading and writing large files sequentially and that does not happen in booting. Booting and most other applications load lots of smaller files scattered throughout the disk instead of reading 1GB files sequentially.

The old X-25M's didn't support trim and their GC wasn't exactly the best, and while 2x X-25M's in RAID-0 will always be better than a HDD, they will grow noticeably slower over time, and pretty much any SSD from the last 2 or 3 generations will stomp all over them at steady state (basically after a month or two).

I recently got my Samsung 840 pro 512 and am loving it. (ordered the EVO but long and funny story... got the wrong package (condoms) instead of the drive. Amazon didn't have the EVO drive I ordered. Gave me the Pro at 100 dollar discount. I was out an additional 9 bucks for the pro over the evo.)

Oh and with the rapid software... it performs like a pair of SSD's in raid0. Quite nice. And I run everything from it. (off system storage for any large files or images I need to store long term.)

I guarantee you that if you unraid those 80gig SSDs, you will not notice a difference in boot times.
