Is a 780Ti overkill for 1080p gaming?

Guys guys can we shift the attention to my problem lol!!.... New Overclockable motherboard or save up and get a 780 later?... If I buy the new mobo I cant afford a new GPU... That is how my situation is lol..:D... I am pretty sure I will see a difference in CPU hungry games.. but take your pick guys....
Sorry :D.

I think in your situation I would buy the new motherboard, then save the money to buy a good Maxwell card when they're finally released late this year or early next year.

Nothing is overkill for anything it just means you are more future proof .

Got it mate :D.. Everybody has said that point here..!!... I will forget the word overkill from now on.. OK?!:)

Not really, no. Overkill is in the eye of the beholder. However, the confusing part to me is that when someone spends 700$+ on a GPU, why not spend as much on making their display configuration that much better? 1080p is pretty much bottom of the barrel at this point IMO. Why not 1600p IPS? Or 1440p? 1440 is pretty cheap now.

Just IMO. Whatever works for you, overkill is different for everyone.

Never in my upgrading experience have I run a new piece of hardware, GPU, CPU, RAM, HDD, or whatever, and afterwards thought, this is really more power than I need, I should have saved some money and bought something slower and cheaper. I have never experienced that.

I don't think there are many people that can tell the difference between a 780 and 780ti at 1080p. I don't really suggest people pay the ~$200 difference at that resolution.

This is very true. A GTX 780 Classified has lots of power available, 375 watts to be exact.

Kingpin got a 15,000 overall score in firestrike with a GTX 780 classified

That is what a R9 295X gets!

You can get one for roughly $450 refurbished by Evga on newegg, with a warranty available. kingpin had his overclocks through the roof ofcourse! And some crazy cooling going on, with a 5.9Ghz 3930K lol. Must be nice..

But, you can unlock this cards voltage to, and send that core clock to 1375mhz and 7200 MHz memory. And it is a GTX 780TI killer. Not to mention, two of these cost the same as a GTX 780 TI Classified.

Until I got my GTX Titan 6GB, and this GTX 660 OEM. I never realized how important two 8pin power connectors are for big boy cards like the 680, and 780 and up. And for lower cards, like a 760, a lot of them have a 8pin and 6 pin, vs. some only two 6 pins.

you video card could clock to 10,000mhz core. But if the power is not there, it will only throttle down and do nothing. Sometimes, I just wish I could plug mine in to the wall to.

I remember years ago, they actually released a DUAL GPU 6600GT and it plugged in to the wall. 110v. lol

nothing is overkill for 1080p gaming. I stepped up to 120hz gaming and lightboost and a regular 780 is just right for most games, but there are many that would run lower.

If you have the money, get what you want. With anything computer related, its not overkill, its whatever you want to afford. It WILL be outdated eventually.
