The Wii U is done

Mario Kart will sell a lot of consoles. The real question though is how much? It's insane 35 million copies were sold on the Wii.

Two week bump tops, maybe 300k for the month and it'll bottom out.

Some peculiar announcements from Nintendo today. Seems like they'll really be investing into the 'figurine gaming' market (think: Skylanders and Disney Infinity), some cell phone apps (a Mario Kart app), and, curiously, entirely new consoles for emerging markets.

God none of that will fix their fundamental problem. It's as if Iwata is scared to bring the fight to Microsoft and Sony.

New consoles for emerging markets (think cheap hardware with even cheaper games), of which will never see light in western markets or JP and SK. Highly plagued by piracy.

Smartphone apps for games that do not have huge market penetration. It'll be worse than the Knack App on iOS and Andriod. Emphasis was implied with apps and not games. Iwata saying:

Selling games for smart devices could jeopardize other segments of the company’s business, and revenue from such an effort “cannot be a pillar” for Nintendo, according to Iwata. The company wouldn’t pursue making games for smartphones unless it could be successful.

“Our games such as Mario and Zelda are designed for our game machines so if we transfer them into smartphones as they are, customers won’t be satisfied,” said Iwata. “If customers aren’t satisfied with the experience, it will decrease the value of our content.”

No games transfered onto smartphones from game machines have continuously generated tens or hundreds of billions of yen over a longer term period, Iwata said.

Is horribly misguided like everything else he comes up with or says. You can create remarkable content on smartphones. Of course you wouldn't put a 3d Mario or something ridiculous on mobile. You innovate and design games around your platform, they have the IP to dominate on mobile.

The skylander plugs won't do anything except create a small amount of yearly income. It's doable and I understand why but it's not what they need to focus on.

Considering the emerging markets make up huge amounts of untapped potential, I'm glad to see Nintendo go for them. This is one of the best long-term ideas for almost any company right now. These markets are going to mean $$ for anyone who can capitalize, with over a billion (hell, probably over 2 billion) people falling into this somewhat broad category in the coming years, why not go for these markets?

I'm glad to see Nintendo make a very sound business choice. Now they need to move more Wii U's and hire a better marketing team for the holidays to sell the shit out of Mariokart and Super Smash.

I wonder if the emerging markets console would be something along the lines of a Wii Mini (red and black Canadian wii). The system would already have a huge amount of games to release with it, and they can price the thing very nicely for that market.

It makes good sense to go with a variant of one of their existing platforms.

One thing about the new Nintendo figurines, I'm hoping they create a separate line of games, or make it into some sort of meta game that's set apart from the core games. I'd be really bummed out if they make the next Mario Galaxy-esque game require you to collect a bunch of figurines to be able to unlock all of the game's content.

I still think Nintendo would be better served entering the mobile game market. I understand them not wanting to bring their AAA software titles to the mobile platform, but smaller NES remix/Game and Watch-style titles, would definitely be a good fit and keep their brand recognition strong amongst a new generation of kids that are associating videogaming more with characters like the Angry Birds or those Minecraft Creepers.

It doesn't make sense for Nintendo to have a mobile proprietary platform of their own and release their own first party titles on outside mobile products at the same time. They have a dedicated user base of 3DS owners. Even if its slowed down that doesn't mean its in the position the Wii U is in.

This E3 will be very interesting , I know Nintendo isn't doing a presentation but they could still drop a bomb on us.

Yar, I believe while they're not doing a traditional conference, they will be releasing a Nintendo Direct video with announcements on it. As well as a similar Best Buy demo promotion like they did last year.

I see Nintendo brand recognition going straight into the toilet with the Wii and Wii U. My kid knows all about Minecraft, Angry Birds, and Skylanders. She mostly associates the Wii with Wii Bowling and party game shovelware. The Wii-U to her is just Nintendoland since that is all she plays when she goes to friends and family houses.

Interesting. My girls don't even know what an XBOX or Playstation is. The only thing they know are Kirby, Mario, Skylanders, Rayman, DS Games, and a smattering of online tablet games (Cut the Rope, Angry Birds, Candy Crush, etc.). Guess MS and Sony's recognition don't mean squat anymore too....

Children tend to follow in their parents likes and dislikes (religion, food, sports, etc). Every time I hear about someone's kids liking something more than something else I just think to myself they are really talking about their own habits. Their kids just picked it up.

I dunno, some of the crap my kid's into doesn't interest me whatsoever, and a lot of the stuff I'm into doesn't interest him either (except for Star Wars - everybody loves Star Wars). If anything, I think the biggest factor for kids is what their schoolyard friends are into.

Yeah, that was my point. The anecdotal comments, whether for or against, don't mean much. Whether or not your kid things "Nintendo" when you say games doesn't mean anything about their brand recognition. Personally I think Nintendo still has a good brand recognition going, even if it is more on the portable 3DS side.

I hope Nintendo can turn things around and get some better 3rd party support. I like my Wii U and it was mainly purchased to play awesome 1st party games anyway. Hopefully they can sell some more consoles.

Its going to be a very slow burn to turn the Wii U around. Even years from now I don't think it'll be a real 180 but something closer half that. The key now is to get manufacturing costs down to as long as possible , keep a steady stream of games going and work on bringing over more indie devs. The Wii U has a lifespan that isn't over and Nintendo isn't going to sink another few Billion dollars into a new hardware platform anytime soon. Right now it has to play the long game while expanding its attitude on modern gaming , time to let go of this entirely closed ecosystem of platforms and embrace its strength in branding.

Nintendo needs to fire its upper food chain as well and bring in fresh blood that will take the leaps required to make them stay relevant.

Honestly all I personally want is a new Zelda/Metroid on the Wii U. That would honestly be such incredible news. With Mario Kart 8 and SSB's coming this year has some seriously good titles on the Wii U. I have yet to be excited for anything this year for the Xbox One or PS4 but that could also change after E3.

Should be a really interesting E3 regardless though.

sadly and ironically, i just dont see them turning around the 3rd party situanilly without stronger sales.

Hate to even post to this thread but Mario kart 8 just called and said Wii U isn't dead.

Looking good, I was caught by surprise with the lack of maps for Battle mode, though. I'm thinking battle mode specific maps would be potential DLC candidates.

Doesn't mean jack. Super Mario 3D World also got amazing scores including many perfect scores. Didn't do much to move Wii-U consoles though. You can declare Mario Kart 8 as the Wii-U's savior on July 1st after we see what a month of being released has done for sales of the console.

Edit: I think the game looks great and I'm looking forward to play it. I am not bashing it in anyway and I fully believe it deserves the scores it got. But calling it a savior is a bit premature without actual data showing it helped move consoles. Many people expected SM3DW to be the Wii-U's savior and it didn't work out so well.

For me the Wii U is the funner of the 3 consoles. It just has more games that me and my family enjoy. That saying there is a huge dearth of games on all 3 consoles and I am fully expecting as the libraries for the ps4 and x1 develops that my preference will change.

It's Mario kart it's meant to be a blast playing with friends if it is should be a 10/10 all day seems like some we're nitpicking like there is a better cart racing game out there lol

Mario Kart is lookin' good. I'll have to pick this up around launch so I can get the free game download (thinking Zelda) before the promo expires. Pity I won't be around my Wii U all summer.

Im getting Zelda too I think. I think that will be harder to find for me than Super Mario Bro's U, so thats my best bet.

I just preordered MK8 on Newegg, I'll be playing the hell out of this upon release. Too many good games coming out at the end of May.

Man after the Treehouse explosion they can buy some time to holiday 2016 and launch their next system.

I'm sure it'll move Wii Us but I doubt it has legs. I was surprised Mario didn't have a larger uptick.

Wii U sales have quadrupled and MK8 has a 20% attach rate.

Lifetime Wii U sales are 6 million. The PS4 is at 7 million.

Good for Nintendo, between MK8 and the announcement of some titles at E3, there approval rating is going up faster than Obama's. ;)

Second, dont listen to next-Jin

Lol if anyone listens to me about anything it should definitely be in regards to Wii U sales and market analysis.

lol im pretty sure nobody listens to you period on these boards. You have 2 seperate threads with people talking about you in the exact same manner, its hilarious how blind you are to patterns, and yet you think your market "analysis" is so top notch. Every single thing you say can be quoted in the exact same way from gaf. Every single one of your posts is nothing but a collection of posts on other sites, you provide 0 analysis just reuse the piss that shows up on other boards

I picked up Mario Kart 8. I really enjoy it. Fun game.

Extremely excited for the next Zelda. Looks like it is going to be awesome. Also, have Super Smash Bros for the Wii U on preorder :D

Very much this. It's like people who are political "experts" that do nothing but regurgitate what they hear on MSNBC or FOX News. No analysis. Just a blend of plagiarism, pessimism, and conjecture.

Nintendo and the Wii U are doing just fine. I love mine. Picking up Mario Kart tomorrow morning and having a little MK/GoT finale gathering tomorrow night. :D

It's a very good game but once you start getting to the later cups on 150cc the rubberbanding is pretty ridiculous.

MK8 is a great game, still doesn't change that the Wii U is struggling.

PS4 is actually at 8.1 million vs 6.3 for Wii U.

The scariest part for Nintendo, Just the PS4 version of Watch Dogs sold more copies and has a higher attach rate than MK8. The PS4 also moved more systems with the release of Watch Dogs than Nintendo is with MK8.

The difference is Watch Dogs is not Sony's ground breaking gem for the console nor is it the most anticipated PS4 game of 2014, it's just a good 3rd party release. MK8 is the best or 2nd best Nintendo has to offer in 2014.

Don't take it as Nintendo bashing, I have a Wii U and MK8 and play it often with the wife and kid, but Nintendo is still in deep trouble with struggling Wii U sales. It's not hard to jump 500% on a flagship title when your sales were abysmal. Prior to the week of MK8 release, the PS3 was outselling the Wii U

Nintendo had a very promising E3 this year, but they need to step and and get these games out before 2015.
