BOINC

I asked Carle over at QCN how long they expected to survive since he last messaged me and told me they probably only had a few months left. Here is his follow up response.

Any official blog post or funding page you can refer to? Maybe I can drum up some support on reddit? : )

At the moment, your long runs are in line with others with 750 Ti's, though it seems there are still some teething issues with getting it optimized for Maxwell. Hmmm, I just attached it to mine to see how they run. I'll let ya know!
I had a feeling that may be the case. Thanks for confirming it.

Yeah...the 750Ti's are kind of a disappointment right now. I don't know if it is the coding or nVidia up to its old tricks... I think the 780Ti's will be what I dream of for quite a while.... lol

On a side note, the CPU apps at GPUGrid are finally working stable on my machines. Even my netbook is doing them now.

Edit: linuxrouter from Crunching@EVGA has some numbers for the 780Ti https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rJfEKtxaLfpoCpWe-LhdylWzO1TeCGXryWM7mUnpxCE/pubhtml

Seems there weren't any GPUGRID wus available last night during my 12-5 download period. All 4 of my cards are doing E@H this morning.

Yeah it did I went for a while witout any last night so it appears to me GPUGrid has all the help it needs, I am switching my GPU's back to primgrid for now.

Hmmph congrats DooKey that is a bunch of points. But keep an eye on your rear view there is somebody lurrking back there.:D

AerospaceResearch.net is proud to announce to be selected for the Summer of Code in Space 2014 (SOCIS) program run by the European Space Agency (ESA).
SOCIS "aims at offering student developers stipends to write code for various space-related open source software projects. Through SOCIS, accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios. In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and bring in new developers."[0]

As an official SOCIS mentoring organization, AerospaceResearch.net[0] accepts applications for mentors and students for ESA SOCIS 2014, now! As a mentor, you can realize your space software, and as a student you are coding it during the summer and are paid €4000 by the European Space Agency for it!

For you students, the application period starts now and will end 15/05/2014. Prepare yourself and read our and all the other 20 organizations' ideas. And then come back to AerospaceResearch.net, because we have the most awesome coding ideas for your. They are all space applications! Here is a brief overview:

[SSGT-XX] Solar System Grand Tour (continuation of last year's GSOC project)
[DGSN-XX] Distributed Ground Station Network
[COMT-XX] Comet Trails (supported by Institute of Space Systems, Stuttgart University)
[SNET-XX] Sensor Networks for global satellite reception with SDRs and GNSS performance measurements (supported by RadioPunks)
[DEOP-XX] Dynamical Evolution of Protoplanets
[XXXX-XX] YOUR IDEA! Propose it today!

The application period for mentors is open and you can apply via [1]. So be creative and propose your idea and be a trustworthy mentor to a young and creative mind!

This year it is ESA's 3rd Summer of Code in Space. SOCIS is open for students aged 18 and older[0]. It offers diverse projects ranging from software development for Mission Control Software, to Graphical User Interfaces, to firmware and also academic work on basic algorithms. People can also mentor emerging developers during their three months of work and provide support and personal help.

On a private remark about last year's SOCIS, AerospaceResearch.net was lucky to have been selected as an organization and mentoring one student. Together with SOCIS spiritual brother, the Google Summer of Code, we want to repeat last year's success in this combined teamwork and even provide an even bigger experience for the selected student(s) and building a important software supporting the space community.
So this is your chance again to combine three things you like during summer: space, programming and money. Of course ESA looks for talented programmers like you! Take this as a good networking chance.

Even if you choose to take the mentor role for the student(s), it will be inspiring because you support great students and great space projects. You, as a mentor, can propose and let your space project ideas be realized! So if you have coding ideas for your project, you can propose them to us and we will announce them on our ideas page to the coding SOCIS students. Here is your chance to find further helping hands in your project's team.

AerospaceResearch.net has open space for everyone.
We are looking for your contact and application!

They have also mentioned in their threads of not having anyone volunteering to code a GPU apps for them. If anyone is interested, this would be an awesome opportunity.

Interesting differences. Clock speed or IPC driven?

For those who still participate, OProject seems to be down at the moment. Their web server and work server are both down.

OProject sucks. It has for probably a year. The admin has pretty well given up on it and is now trying his luck with Beal@home. It is having similar issues that OProject had. I would recommend avoiding it altogether.

It has been my backup of a backup project that has a few wu sitting and waiting to report. Seems like the man behind it is a scammer of sorts then. That's poopy.

I don't know much about him being a "scammer" but he does seem to have big ideas and problems delivering. He never presented a working ALX app that did anything. Awarded points were horrible for Windows systems. He never got check pointing to work in some of his apps. He never got the progress bar to work in some of his apps. His site was always slow and problematic. He then asked the community on their thoughts of starting a BOINC stock exchange where you could buy and sell points and was serious about it. His badges were screwy most of the time and weren't awarded correctly. Then, after the stock exchange issue died, he kind of stopped commenting in his forums. Other volunteers also pointed out that the apps he was using (he didn't code them) weren't known for being the best or the most accurate. Now he is active with getting Beal@home going which I'm assuming he is hopeful to get some kind of reward money for. That project also is experiencing headaches in all the same categories that OProject seemed to have consistent troubles. He really just isn't qualified for the job IMHO.

Hi BOINC volunteers,

We are a fairly new project that has been running for about 3 years or so now. We are an academic group located in Université de Sherbrooke (Québec, Canada) and NRG stands for Najmanovich Research Group. Our project is already listed on BOINCstats: http://boincstats.com/en/stats/126/user/list/.

As some of you may already know, we are mostly interested into drug design. We have been developing FlexAID, a method that allows to predict if a molecule may act/bind on a particular target. More info on our method can be found here: http://bcb.med.usherbrooke.ca/boinc.php.

We are currently investigating if our method can distinguish between true binders and non-binders. We are doing so for a lot of targets mentioned below [*]. We have nearly a million of tasks to execute and NRG needs your help!

We have had a few issues with FlexAID regarding Computation Errors in the past. However, those were all resolved through the many years of development.

Our method will soon be published in a scientific journal, and we wouldn't be here today if you, BOINC users, have not been there. We are very grateful and thanks a lot for your support.

Francis Gaudreault
Ph.D student & BOINC Administrator

Since emailing an admin didn't work a few years ago, I posted publicly in the formula BOINC forums to have them fix our team name issue so that we are fairly represented. Basically, we are not be awarding the points from the 7 projects that use HardOCP instead of [H]ard|OCP

I have witnessed this problem first hand. I haven't done a lot to try and work around it. I figured it may help others whom might want to use Moo! to push our position at RC5-72 or those whom just like the project. It has been a problem since last year, but many may not be aware since our team hasn't been real active there.

http://moowrap.net/forum_thread.php?id=337#5730

As many of you already knows running Moo with a dual+ gpu hw with the latest boinc client is really complicated. We have the following possible scenarios:

1- revert to BOINC 6.xxx thus losing any openCL capability.
2- do nothing: tasks are downloaded but never start.
3- app_config with <gpu_usage>1.00</gpu_usage> (I tested it on a couple of HD6950 and noticed a *huge* performance drop)
4- same as above but also adding <max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent> (this works but *only* if Moo is the only gpu project you run)

The problem is that, regardless of the configuration you use (3 or 4) a Moo workunit will always notices that you have a dual gpu setup and tries to start two "crunchers" (in the third scenario the result is 4 threads fighting for just 2 gpus). This is something that comes by design from the original dnetc.com client. I don't think that something can be done here, by the Moo administrators, for solving this....

But having the source code of the client and a little bit of knowledge and time to spent (that I don't have by now....) shouldn't be too difficult to just insert a couple of lines in order to completely disable the multithread capabilities of the client, thus solving a lot of problems here.

Running Moo out of the box is getting more and more complicated... The lack of proper support of the latest AMD Tahiti (and newer) gpus and problems like the one I just described above are continuously pushing away users from this project...

TN-Grid is a platform that uses Internet-connected computers to do research in various scientific projects. You can participate by downloading and running a free program on your computer.

TN-Grid is based at the Research Area of Trento of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and currently hosted by the University of Trento (UNITN). The first project we host is

gene@home, in collaboration with Fondazione Edmund Mach (FEM) and the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI) of UNITN.

We would also like to thank the members of the BOINC.Italy community who are helping us in this testing phase.

I have set up our team at this project. It is still in Alpha, so should only be worked on by those willing to deal with start up headaches. It requires an invite code which I have been given. Interested individuals should PM me for the code. I will add it to the all inclusive list later.

Added it to the all inclusive DC List

I'm still trying to get them to fix our standing at Formula-BOINC. We are currently 3rd in our division and we aren't getting all of our points. Einstein isn't listed, WCG has the wrong team, etc... Basically the 7 projects that use HardOCP aren't being tallied right.

Two of my machines are temporarily down, pulled the vid cards to sell them and replaced with low power GPUs, and I'll be migrating them to Linux tonight. Getting strapped for cash so freeing up roughly £100 whilst reducing my power draw can only be a good thing, plus the CPU projects typically interest me more anyway.
After re assessing how much space I have I've also decided to cap my dedicated systems at 5 - the "rack" will accommodate two more but then I'd need a new switch, new surge strips, and possibly a new rack as it's really not as sturdy as I thought it was, it is only a cheap plastic shelf unit after all :p
Finally got around to making a start on my stack of laptops to fix up, sold two immediately which may become part time borgs, now just 8 to go...

I'm making progress with fixing our situation with Formula-BOINC. I'm guessing if they fix it, we will slingshot from 3rd to 2nd with ease. However, I am just guessing. If we wanted to take it serious there, we could probably give Rechenkraft a pretty good run for their money...

Nice work, here's hoping they can and do fix the naming issue :)

Off topic random fact of the day, their website actually uses the same template I used to create my first ever website, odd coincidence.

I have another borged donation PC being prepped. It is a dual core Optiplex 360 that will be ran part time for a local not for profit involving kids. It will most likely just be used to play some kids games and learning CD's.

I was asked as well, but I am still on the fence. I like the idea of having good team competition and good team relations, but I am highly against people getting handouts for stuff they don't earn.

For example: If a member wanted to obtain a badge at a project. I'm against other members letting them use their hardware on a temporary basis just so they can earn the badge. That isn't right. The badges reflect your contribution and is a sign of your commitment. If someone else just hands you the badge, then they earned it not you. I think goals are there for a reason. There must be times of failure so that you can truly appreciate when you succeed. This t-ball mentality in society needs to stop. People aren't learning how to cope and adapt with failure. But that is my soapbox.

On the other hand, I think teams really need to start engaging each other more. Whether it be through fun banter and jests as they antagonize one another or it be through co-operation for a common goal. I think too many teams are closed to the rest of the DC communities and totally miss the mark at times. So, I leave it to you guys to decide on what you would like to do.

I also wont hold it against anyone who helps them out. We all know how bad they could use the bump in cred.....LOL j/k

I hadn't been at Einstein for a while, but apparently they are BETA testing a new GPU app that requires double precision video cards. I figured this would be important to those with mixed card setups where one card might be DP capable and the other card isn't like I have done many times.

Due to the excellent work of our French volunteer Christophe Choquet we finally have a working OpenCL version of the Gravitational Wave search ("S6CasA") application. Thank you Christophe!

This App version is currently considered 'Beta' and being tested on Einstein@Home. To participate in the Beta test, you need to edit your Einstein@Home preferences, and set "Run beta/test application versions?" to "yes".

It is currently available for Windows (32 Bit) and Linux (64 Bit) only, and you should have a card which supports double precision FP in hardware.

Fight Malaria@Home News. This would explain why I ran out of work.
Sorry for the delay in responding to your messages.

We have compiled all the data into a single database (no mean feat as it's now 118GB!) due to our limited resources this was spread over a number of HDs. The FM@H data is 95% complete. Kevin is in the process of pulling out the remaining failed dockings for re-docking on the BOINC server.

The new name of the server will be FiND@Home for FightNeglectedDiseases@Home. Over the summer we'll build a website front-end for the data, that will be searchable and interlink with other online resources (e.g. Uniprot/PDB/KEGG). This should make the data easily accessible for biologists interested in exploring the output data. We'll build it with future BOINC data from other genomes in mind (e.g. TB).

Many thanks for hanging in there for us...
Ant

Yeah they chose the new name so that the next time they finish up the science they can just role out another sub project. It sure makes things easier on them and the users.

So, what does everyone think about us trying to get the 7 BOINC projects that use HardOCP to merge our accounts or change the name to [H]ard|OCP to be consistent with the rest of the projects?

There is a [H]ard|OCP already at Einstein that seems completely inactive. I know there are a couple teams at WCG, but I'm not sure if the current team captains of those teams care or not. I'm just shooting ideas out there because it really would simplify things if we can get them to do it.

+1. It would avoid confusion for new startup users and hopefully it might fix some of the stats automatically.

I just wasn't sure if any of the team captains had issues with trying to get it fixed and such because the project admins may require them to put in the request. I also don't know if any of the team captains on the "other" teams are even active and care or not. Those captains don't seem to post in the forums anyways....

Do your best. We need identical names for the team to make sure we don't split points.

King_N[H] and Sheep221 are contributing to the wrong WCG team. Both members are registered to [H]ard|OCP(613). Everyone is contributing to HardOCP(1411) with the exception of these two members.

Anybody know how to contact them to let them know?

If we really want to clean up the WCG teams, my vote is to merge [H]ard|OCP(613) and [H]ardOCP(1242) into HardOCP(1411) and then rename the team to whatever matches the other projects. Maybe metallicafan can chime in since he was able to get himself appointed Captain of HardOCP(1411) and might know the best way to make this happen.

I PM'd Razor_FX_II and metallicafan to see if they could do anything about it first since they are our official teams captains at those projects. Razor_FX_II is just an admin on SETI, but that should still give him some ability to represent as far as the name goes. The other teams that were created I have not tried contacting. I will leave that up to metallicafan to orchestrate if he can.
