DC Vault 2

That would explain why it's been down for a few days then...nice of them to warn their donors.

Exactly. That isn't just something you wake up one day and say "Hey, I think I will just shut the project down today".... I'm hoping it is someones idea of a dumb joke, because shit like this really pisses off volunteers.

Yeah...I still have work trying to upload too. It would have been nice for them to give like a week or two notice and to stop work generation. And here I was about to donate a considerable amount of time to them. I had neglected to support them for so long and now that ship has sailed.

edit: I have also pulled it from the all inclusive dc list

I wanted to point out that we are still in discussions of projects to add and pull in the Vault. It has already been brought up that PSP is falling short in a few area, but the only rule it is breaking is the members being accepted immediately rule. People should not have to wait days to have their account created. Not on a regular basis. It would be different if the project had servers down or some kind of hardship. This process is just rediculous in today's computing world. So for now, I wouldn't put too much effort into that client until we find out if it is going to still be in the Vault when everything is said and done.

Understood, but I like automating things as much as possible and writing the scripts was fairly simple. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else used them before I submit them upstream. Also, I head back from Citrix on the PSP forum that ltd travels for work and he's commonly offline, etc. It would be nice if someone other than ltd could add people to teams since it's a manual process.

The linux script is good for any prpnet project :). Well, we have our 1M point for the PSP rank increase anyways, once we get assigned to the team. That should give us effectively 666 points since we are trading position with the team ahead of us in overall rank :)

Looks like we finished most of all the easy GIMPS ranks... It looks like we can get 2 more positions over a month or 7 positions over 3 months...

Brilong, are you going to cycle PSP down to get ready for the next primegrid challenge..

Excellent!

I have two more GTX 580's I'm going to bring online, hopefully in the next day or two. Maybe this will increase our takeover speed. :)

I don't follow all the forums very actively except [H], so I rely on you guys prodding me. :D It looks like the May challenge was month-long so I'm 13 days behind the 8-ball. I assume this is what you're talking about:
http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=5661

Looks like all I need to do is edit the master_prpclient.ini, add
Code:
server=ESP:100:1:prpnet.primegrid.com:13005
and comment out the other server entries temporarily. Then I need to restart the clients, let them finish their work on PSP and they'll get work for ESP. Is that right?

And if you are like me it will not be your last, speaking of challanges, the next on is on the 20th it is an 8 day challange :) http://www.primegrid.com/ and we stand a real chance of placing in the top 2 or 3 of the challange series for the year if we win enough of these.

Brilong I believe he is talking about this on which is part of the yearly challenge series :) , There are 11 challenges during the year in the series and they vary from 3 day to 15 day challenges. We are awarded both team and individual points in the challenge series itself and right now we are doing fairly well especially since we missed the first 2 in the series. http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/challenge.php scroll down on the page and you can see the points award scheme for team and individuals.

Hey...I only came in 1,553 in that last challenge.... lol :D

Since eOn was a bust this month, I may hop on this next challenge.

POGS! That's what I'm going for in the challenge. I have only half he hardware I did, but I'm making some progress though. Anyone else hopping on that bandwagon?

I can do that for a few day's until the next primgrid challange since we have pretty much gone through all the easy points at NFS and Enigma.

It looks like Climate Predictions website is completely down.

Grandpa, you could always give YoYo some time. DooKey seems to be doing some good numbers there right now. Depending on what numbers you throw up at that project, you could probably knock out a couple positions in a week.

Added another 250 ghz days per day to Gimps processing :)

What are Seventeen or Bust wu Points like, I see that the runtime on Opteron 6234 are around 28days...(80ms per step)

It appears they updated their client today. I have not looked at the changes yet, but I did know the one they had was older than the one from GIMPS.

http://www.seventeenorbust.com/download/

I average ~ 19-23 M jEMs/sec. I have no idea what that translates to. This is using 2 cores (1 work unit/core for a total of 2 work units) of a Core i5 3470. Work units usually take a couple weeks.

Edit: the client I had downloaded for GIMPS was v27.9 build 1 and the one I am running for SOB (prior version before todays release) was v27.7 build 2

Rusty has declared that he wants our removal and addition requests to be finalized to get a scope of what's going on so we can get it changed up.

My suggestions so far for removal:
ABC because of lack of continuous work.
RNA because of lack of continuous work.
LHC because of lack of continuous work.
The Lattice Project because of lack of continuous work.
Climate Prediction due to stats export issues that have gone on for months. There are other issues that still continue but the stats export is problematic for a competition based on stats. Also, because of how they do their stats, if someone leaves their points do too. That is why when I joined the team we automatically had like 200k points added.
Docking due to it coming to an end this Month.
eOn because it closed down.
PSP because they are just too slow at adding teams and distributing work. They seem to care more abvout PrimeGrid than anyone. Their setup is archaic when it doesn't have to be.

My suggestions for addition:
Constellation
Ibercivis (they gave permission via PM)
PrimaBoinca - only concern is lack of forum response from mods/admins
DistrRTgen
Numberfields (they gave permission via PM) - they also said they have multiple years worth of work left to do.
Distributed Data Mining - users should take note that it requires Java to be installed

I need to know what everyone thinks and if there should be others added or removed. I am trying to represent the teams thoughts and ideas...not just my own.

Edit: he also posted that eOn should be removed within the next 7 days.

I just installed it on my laptop. Guess we'll see how it goes.

App causes computation errors for me. Deleting and going back to stock.

Hmm... possibly posting your results in their forums. It doesn't look like they had much response in there yet. Not sure if anyone was bothering with the optimized app...lol.

I am really not thinking too highly of YoYo at this point. They have very limited English support on there forums, if you do not have an approved e-mail you can not register at there forums anyway so I guess it is kind of irrelevant anyway. And my email service is hotmail which is not accepted. I have always been under the impression that if some one was willing to help me with anything I would bend over backwards to make it easy for them to help me.

I am kind of starting to get the impression that DC Vault does not have very high standards or requirements for being associated with it. Some of choices of projects they have to run are really quite disappointing when it comes to support and ease of setup

But then again I guess I do not have to run those projects, perhaps DC Vault should implement sliding scale on there assignment of points given to a project. If a project has poor support -10% if a project has frequent work shortages server problems -10% etc. etc. etc.

I don't recall having those issues with setting up my account for their forums...I use a Hotmail account for it...maybe they implemented it later to combat spam...

I wish we could change up the Vault with a more complex system Grandpa, but from what I have read and the impression I get, they are not willing to change up its current format. Only adding and subtracting projects seems to be an option. This is why I have been trying to push more strict rules for Vault projects and give the project owners a stream lined procedure for getting stuff done quickly. There just aren't that many requirements.....

I'm running Primegrid Genefer WR on the 780ti. This ought to be fun. Estimated run time is around 66 hours and the current elapsed time is about 9 hours. It crashed once but I blame the Kerbals. :D
I paused the wu to play KSP and I think that might have caused a problem.

Gilthanis - I agree with all your removal suggestions, but the only two additions I'm familiar with are DistrRTgen (which I run) and Constellation (which I haven't yet). All the rest of the projects I've run regularly are already there!

My only other thought for addition would be WUProp - I know it's not a strict "for science" type app, but the data it's compiling is useful to those who know how to use it, and adding it to the Vault might raise awareness of it in the DC community. Plus, we never have to worry about it running out of work with no notice! :) (Feel free to call me crazy on this one, I'll totally understand)

I have considered WUProp and have mixed feelings on it. If the team wants it added though, I will make the suggestion. I do like the project over all, but am not sure it is a good fit.

My issues with it is that...
1. you must run other BOINC work or it doesn't award credit. (this can also be manipulated)
2. It only allows one work unit per pc (or VM)
3. The data is known to not be super accurate. ie. If you run more than one work unit on your GPU, it looks like the apps run slower on that GPU due to the two work units sharing the same resources...

My 2P will be down until I get home today. Not a great way to start a challenge.

I would agree that some work is needed to keep the DCVault fresh. The competition has gotten somewhat stagnant because of no new additions as well as not removing projects that don't have work. When a project doesn't have regular work its pretty hard for teams to advance in the project standings. I would agree with removing projects that do not have regular abundant work, and projects that do not have a responsive admin community.

As far as adding projects I only have experience with DistRTGen and it seems to be a stable project and I would support its addition to the Vault. I would recommend being cautious with the "rules for addition/removal" from the Vault. The minute that adding or removing a project becomes about politics or emotion of some sort and not about the measurement against a certain set of rules/criteria then the Vault will lose the respect of many crunchers IMO. (For instance, DistRTGen probably should have been added a long time ago but people voted not to add it because of the assumed malicious intent of the project's subject matter. Near as I could tell it met the inclusion criteria).

Gil - Thanks for rattling some cages and helping get the Vault competitive again.

I finished up two work units for CPU on GIMPS...man those took forever. If it weren't my work PC, I wouldn't bother. I have the 4 cores split between GIMPS and SOB.

Yeah...removing this many project will certainly shake things up, but adding those new projects would also shake it further. The removals would probably help our position quite a bit, but if they add the project I mentioned, we would have some work to do to make up lost time. We don't have a ton of exposure at those other projects yet. To me this is great because it gives us attainable goals to keep us motivated and move up the ranks. To others, it may seem like a slap in the face to have their hard work ripped out from under neath them. My outlook is that the Vault is always evolving and should always have you making adjustments. Teams who want to claim top dog need to be in fact top dog. :)

I just want people to understand what I mean about Climate Prediction having stats issues. BOINCStats has me listed at having 860,593.84 pts. Climate Prediction's page says that I have 973,784 pts. On top of this being an issue for months and is a low priority on their list, the other huge problem I have with their stats export is also a known issue. That issue is that your points travel with you. Meaning, if I switched teams to say EVGA, all of my points would transfer to their team. This is why when I joined team [H] a couple years back metallicafan saw the 200k+ point increase for the team. This is not standard practice in the BOINC community.

I've got a bunch of cores crunching PSP right now in the hopes they'll add me to our team and our rank will increase. Considering the 300+ point jump that would create, I'm hoping they'll come around, allow more automation for team joining and stay in the Vault.

I assume each project will be contacted before being removed from the Vault with explicit reasons they are being removed. Maybe this would light a fire under certain admins...
