Xbox One Will Fail In China

It sure seems like a lot of people are predicting doom and gloom for the Xbox One in China.

"It's a good thing Microsoft is rolling in cash, because they've just made announcement of a plan that's going to cost them dearly," he explained, listing five reasons Microsoft's console was apparently doomed to failure.

I think both Microsoft and Nintendo should scrap their respective home consoles and release better ones.

I think microsoft is trying to make the smarphone of the home entertainment center.

If they had brains they would have partnered with Denon or Harmon Kardon to license their hardware into their receivers. Let them meet the specs and exceed them with a massive bad ass receiver that is ALREADY the center point of your surround sound entertainment center.

Damn.. even thinking about that is a good idea.

Many people already spend 700+ on a good high end receiver. I would trust Onkyo or Harmon Kardon or another high end manufacturer to make a bad ass receiver/xbone machine that can handle all of my inputs. It isn't THAT huge a stretch to see a console built into one as well.

THEN Microsoft would be out of the hardware business where the loss is leader. (they could still make a stand alone if they chose but actually build some profit into it.) and let the sound/upscaling guys that ahve been doing it all along come out with something that will have a built in attrition based on age.

Wow.. that is such a damn good idea. I hope somebody pays me for this.

Nintendo should just get out of the console business. They went from an N64 to a Wii. Apparently they only make products for 5 and under now.

This goes without question. The Asian market in general is tough for American businesses to get into. Sony has always done better in Japan compared to the X-Box. Wouldn't surprise me the same will happen in China. The types of games the western world likes typically are nowhere close to what the eastern world prefers. Sony has built up a strong presence on both sides which is why it fares better globally. Microsoft is still HEAVILY focused on North America and Europe. The rest of the world is just free money thx 4 watching kinda deal.

China will buy one. Then XBlocks 360, TBoT Circle, ExBox San Liu Ling will all flood the market. "REAL 3-D GAM EXPERIANCE" in stars and comic sans all on the box and everything.

It'll fail because the console will still be too expensive compared to the PS4, and the big selling games on the machine are pro American and fuck everyone else who isn't pro America. Also today we seem to have no problem including a black person into media, but Asian is still missing from all this. Sony has a lot of Japanese developers who haven't forgotten that part of the world. Even though their depiction of an Asian is what looks half white and totally metrosexual.

If developers want to broaden their sales then they need to explore multiculturalism a bit better.

Microsoft will need to advertise it really well. The only reason the iPhone is so popular there is because it's a status symbol. You can't exactly show off a Xbox One in public.

2 queststions: 1) how often do people upgrade their recievers? 2) Recievers put off a lot of heat, so wouldnt adding xbox innards produce way more?.

Nothing wrong with the Xbox One...menu is crap to navigate, compared to the 360, but other than that, works well so far.

hmm... i think part of the issue with one is MS lost the for the gamers hype/feeling they had with xbox original and 360. I love all the consoles, but i really loved what ms wanted to accomplish with xbox original and 360, just dont get the same feeling. Maybe its kinect, but their focus has shifted a bit from what they were.

Problem: 99% of people do not own receivers.

I love high end audio, but I am a minority. That's a fact.

That's a terrible idea. Most people don't own receivers and wouldn't want to pay for such hardware. Besides, for a decent receiver you'd be looking at $500+ not including the integrated xbox hardware pricing it way out of the range of typical console gamers and even those interested in a receiver in the first place. At the same time, such an integration would exclude those with higher end receivers already who wouldn't want to waste the space to run a lower end receiver just to play some videogames every now and then.

If you consider that MS wants the xbox one to be the "center" of the TV viewing experience(or some nonsense) what would have made more sense with the TV integration already included in the xbox would have been to include DVR functionality, which would have been a no-brainer since 90% of the hardware for it is already in the box minus a basic tuner and larger HDD. Such a product would have increased the cost, but not as much as attempting to make it into an actual receiver, and even if a base version of the xbox one didn't include such DVR support a subsidized version of the product for TV service providers to lease to customers would have been a decent idea.

I have a high end receiver in my theater room, but my xbox360 is hooked to my family room TV. It's just more convenient that way.

Having to pay a recurring monthly cost to get free features from an expensive piece of gear is the reason I won't buy an Xbone. I doubt the median Chinese household has more discretionary income than me, so I suspect there won't be a lot of takers there.

Yeah, I don't think that's going to help. Fewer and fewer people even buy receivers these days because you don't need one if all you want is decent audio. Only people who go full out on the audio care enough to have a receiver at all and if I count every person I know who cares about that I think I only get 2 or 3 and I know hundreds of people.

Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft should have just gotten together and created one console that would play all the games and saved a ton of money. The whole idea of locking people in to your ecosystem is dated and irritating.

Knowing China, the Xbox1 will be introduced there, and 9 months later the Chinese will come out with their own "Homegrown" version called CSquare1 or such that they'll say they've been working years on but will look remarkably alot like the XBox. :p

My head...

No thanks. Don't need a Fischer-Price UI on a bad ass receiver. Good lord.

Well there is the problem right there. If you think the 360's UI was good to navigate in... sheesh. I've never been so frustrated by such laggy.. slow... crap! And they honed this UI over many releases.. progressively making it more laggy to use as time went on. Yup.. great UI!

Nintendo should just get out of the console business. They went from an N64 to a Wii. Apparently they only make products for 5 and under now.

Nintendo has always targeted the younger crowd. They've always had a problem with adult oriented games, but most importantly they've always had a problem with third party developers on their consoles.

Nintendo has pretty much been the center of their consoles since the N64. Their titles alone have kept their business ahead.

The Xbox in particular is strongly American. In Europe the PS3 did considerably better. The reason the Xbox 360 did decent overall (just a tad behind the PS3) is because the USA is a large country. And the early issues with the PS3. But the Playstation is still more popular in Europe than the Xbox brand.

If you look back at Nintendo's old retro (NES/SNES) library, I would argue they used to target everyone or they were just trying to make fun games with no demographic at all. Sure they limited blood, gore and other controversial content at the time. But there certainly wasn't a lack of variety either.

I honestly believe when they started slimming down their library and becoming laser focused on quality games for specific audiences, while ditching 3rd parties (especially the ones without child/family friendly titles), is exactly where they went wrong. Going after just kids and casuals made them huge money for a while, but there is very little loyalty there, hence the iPad poaching all those buyers. Hell I asked my daughter if she wanted a 3DS for her birthday because she likes the Pokemon games. She said no because she spends most of her time on her iPad.

Unfortunately, 3rd parties no longer trust Nintendo to properly market or provide enough hardware for the games they want to make.

I really think they need to distance themselves from the Wii name, release a powerful Super Nintendo 2 with games for everyone (including a title for each of their own franchise games on launch) or they will fade away to irrelevance.

Except that it's inferior to their main competitor, and costs more to.

It does more and includes more than their competitors. Games look and play great and really the only way you would be disappointed is if you plugged them both in and compared the exact same game at close range.

When my ps4 died I took it back and they were out so I got my money back and haven't considered another since. Xbox was a better experience overall for my family. If you want to really get down to it the ps3 is still better than the 4 and the xbox 1 for media playback.

I'm not saying that this ultimate demise will happen, but if you say something enough, true or not, people will believe it either way. So basically if it doesn't fail. People will say it did anyways. Looks to me people are running out of things to write about.

1. Most follks that I know of only upgrade receivers when the old one dies or they have a component that can take advantage of a new feature that their current one does not support. They can out last consoles.

2, Yes they do. And they function through the heat output as well. A bit of creative engineering to combine the two is all that is needed.

Why do I get the feeling, that in another life, you were one of the geniuses behind the Philips CD-i. :D :p

Seriously though, the overall market for receivers is too low to recoup the costs of the engineering, licensing, development, support, etc.
If the hardware was too different, it would also cause severe fragmentation of the games/software released.

It is an interesting idea, but too much would have to be given for so little, and risky, return.

^ make games for ps4 and x1 would be a better alternative.

Same could be said for Microsoft. Stop with the consoles and just make games for PCs and/or licensed to other console manufacturers. Or Sony for that matter. Why does Nintendo need to give up and go software but MS and Sony are okay still making hardware?

My comment meant after the N64.. The NES and SNES were before the N64. Most of those adult oriented games for the NES and SNES are from third party developers. Something that I also said Nintendo lacks support for since the N64.

It did have some to do with the lack of hardware (the N64 didn't sell that many units compared to it's rival), but most importantly it's the lack of Nintendo support to third party developers. Also Nintendo titles, since the N64, have out sold nearly all third party titles. Therefore they just stopped developing for Nintendo.

I honestly believe when they started slimming down their library and becoming laser focused on quality games for specific audiences, while ditching 3rd parties (especially the ones without child/family friendly titles), is exactly where they went wrong. This happened around the N64. It was very difficult to not only code for, but the cartridge based system limited the amount of space developers had. I believe the largest N64 cartridge at the time was 512MB and that was towards the end of it's life. At the time the PS1 had a CD based system with 650MB and the ability to span games on multiple discs. The cartridges were a lot more expensive to manufacturer making the PS1 much, much more profitable. Sony also sold an SDK for the PS1 to nearly anyone who had the money. Nintendo, not so much.

Unfortunately, 3rd parties no longer trust Nintendo to properly market or provide enough hardware for the games they want to make.

The Wii out sold the PS3 and 360. That's not the problem. The problem is those adult games just wouldn't sell on the Nintendo console.

I really think they need to distance themselves from the Wii name, release a powerful Super Nintendo 2 with games for everyone (including a title for each of their own franchise games on launch) or they will fade away to irrelevance.

Nintendo isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

That is alright the xbone is failing or losing ever where else.

they forgot how to make good consoles like the 1st xbox and xbox 360 and even those failed everywhere else but the usa.

about xbone: While yes its a bit less powerful then the ps4, its I believe the idea/marketing behind the console and price. For 100 bucks more, xbone honestly doesnt offer anything worth that extra dollars, yet... It needs some killer app that could only be done on the xbox with kinect, for it to prove its higher priced. Microsoft also doesnt have the repertoire sony has in regards to its first party games.

The entire point of consoles is a relatively low entry price, increasing the price and hardware to make it an AVR while consolidated just doesn't go with that model.

If MS wanted to make the Xbone the center of your living room media experience, they SHOULDN'T HAVE PUT ALL THOSE FUNCTIONS BEHIND A PAYWALL!!!
Seriously, I have to PAY to use something I already pay for?
If I want to watch Netflix or use the Time Warner DVR function that's supposed to be coming, I'm going to have to subscribe to Xbox live?
What f$cking idiot came up with that plan?
Hell I'd PAY $500 to own a Xbox One just to use as a DVR with voice activated software, or to make Skype family calls, so long as I wasn't paying MS a monthly fee to use those features.
Sure, keep the online gaming on Xbox live, give the rest for free, and I'd buy it.

Why does Nintendo need to give up and go software but MS and Sony are okay still making hardware?

Because with the exception of the Wii every Nintendo console generation has continuously declined significantly every generation. IIRC this also applies to their handhelds, but the point is Nintendo (unless they completely change their mentality) can't keep profiting off that 2 decade old philosophy.

They sold over 20 million copies of some of their strongest IPs on the Wii and see great sales even on failed platforms (Wii U).

Imagine if that user base was 150+ million every generation with dedicated online support and systems already in place where your sole function was to release games and not worry about getting everything else wrong again.

They would have to pay royalties but they would be able to get back to the only thing they are good at and that's making games. Their hardware, online, achievement/trophy support, etc have been god awful since the N64.

They profit off the consoles true, but with an ever declining base it's only a matter of time.

The reason people say that Nintendo needs to go software is because they are selfish. IE they don't want to buy a Nintendo console because they are low end but they want to play Nintendo games.

The problem with that mentality is if Nintendo wants to do something with hardware and they have abandoned the market it will be difficult to do so. They will not see any chance of another smash hit like the wii. The reality is that no one knows the future and Nintendo could possible strike gold again. For instance they could scrap the wii U and build a good machine 2 year after Sony and MS. This would be more powerful and they could try to get back the big name games.

Really? The Wii got boring fast. The best game came with it (Wii Sports) and once you got tired of it it became a $200 bookend on the shelf.
Mario Galaxy really wasn't that great, Zelda was a wild flailfest, and Donkey Kong wasn't that much better than anything I played on the SNES.
Nintendo is releasing underpowered consoles 3rd party developers have no interest in scaling back their game engines for while making all their money selling us our favorite games from the 8 and 16 bit era.
Its sad really.

What could they possibly do that has not been done better or is not in development (VR)?

They have the Move, Kinect, VR, voice, touch (ps4), etc.

Another tablet won't ever happen, and a particular controller could be licensed out by Sony or MS. I assure you if Nintendo wanted their own type of controller for their games as long as it was 100% functional with their libraries neither Sony nor MS would care.

Don't get me wrong I fully believe that Nintendo will release one more console at least but if the historical precedent keeps up then it'll probably be their last.

They would still have a few billion left to refocus their company as a third party developer letting go of hardware engineers and hiring more talent for more games. They have enough cash for another failure and they are going to do it. Iwata and Nintendo in General is in a complete state of denial.

Nintendo needs to build a machine with lots of power. Thats the only way people will turn their heads and get one.

Who said it cant have been done before. Pretty much all the joke we call innovation is just stealing or recycling an old idea or someone else's idea. Its about way more than just doing something new. It's about the implementation, cost structure, timing in the market, timing in life. Its about a lot. Think about all the kids who played wii, when they start coming of age they will have some nostalgia and that might result in a huge Nintendo win if its timed right and the console is right.

Last gen everyone though the wii was counted out, under powered but it ends up being the right price and time and is a smash hit. Have motion controls not been done before? They have.
