So torn; Keep the One m8 or get the S5 ?

Hello, would like some honest advice and opinions please, on whether to keep my new ATT HTC One M8 or get the ATT Galaxy S5 ?

I am no fanboy, I have owned like 11 or 12 different Android phones over the past four years, HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc... To me the company brand doesn't really matter whatsoever. In this order is my opinion on most important features; #1 = Best battery life, #2 = Best screen, #3 = Pocketable and good feel in hand, and weight in pants / shorts, #4 = Root option, to debloat the phone, and install apps like AdAway, and Greenify, and Xposed Framework, #4 = Smoothness of the OS and UI, no lag, and good looking UI.

Little recent phone history the past year, I have had the ATT S4 since the Fall, and before that the Nexus 4. Got rid of the Nexus due to average battery life, and dropped it and cracked the screen. Got the ATT S4, and liked it, but didn't know about the lock bootloader before I bought it, so Root was my only option, but I was cool with that, root allowed me to all I wanted, like delete apps, install root apps, and also Xposed framework with Wanam, and I turned my S4 into a cool phone, but the S4 screen always seemed too dim for outdoors, and battery life was ok, not bad, not great, and it did lag a little here and there. So...time for an upgrade.

Reading every review out there between the new HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5, made them seem like such a tie, it was more personal features that separated them, but hardware wise, both phones share very similar components, and pretty close battery life.

After owning the One M8 for a week now, only noticeable drawbacks coming form an S4, is the weight of the M8 feels much heavier, especially when in the pockets of my pants or coat, it weighs it down noticeably more than the S4 did, and with gym shorts on the M8 feels like a brick, where the S4 was very feather light in comparison. And turning it on, the S4 with the bottom home button, I was so used to pressing then and then swiping hand to turn on the screen. The M8 has knock on, which is ok, but I don't like it that much, and then the power button on top to turn screen on, is a little pain.

But the M8 has a very beautiful LCD screen, and looks great outdoors. The speed of the M8 is crazy fast. And Sense 6 looks really good, almost like stock Android, but lightly improved or touched up. Where as Touchwiz on my S4 was an ugly mess. The settings on the Galaxy S4 was a cluster**** design, where as the Sense 6 settings menu is smart and clean looking.

But I did see a coworker with a new S5, and I did get a little jealous of it, the screen looked pretty dang sweet and his all black S5 phone in a black case, looked stealth bad ass cool :cool: The M8 in dark gray, doesn't really have an exact color matching case, so with a case on the M8 it really loose the coolness big time, this M8 looks best naked, as soon as a case it put on it, the great design disappears.

Only thing keeping me back from the S5, is ATT, and no Root, and I know for sure no bootloader unlock coming ever, but at least basic Root I need on a phone. How do you use a phone with all that crapwear installed without removing it ? And I can't afford the $700 to buy an off contract S5, plus I think that's outrageous to pay, I'd just wait for the One+ or Nexus 6 for $399.

So bottom line, is the ATT S5 worth it over the M8, if I like the lighter weight, the home button to turn it on, the gorgeous screen, and stealth look of the black design ? But with no Root, not sure I can live with that ? But then I do love Sense 6, and the ROM'ing I can do on the M8, and battery life has been off the charts good on this M8 with my rooted settings, which battery life is extremely important to me.

So ... ?

How in a hurry are you?

Since you're not on a CDMA carrier...I'd wait to see what the OnePlus is like once it goes for sale.

I will say, the M8 feels very premium in the hand, and the screen is extremely crisp, bright, and clear looking, was great outdoors yesterday at a family party in the backyard, could see the M8 screen easily during the day, and I NEVER could see well outdoors with the S4. My old S4 feels like a kids plastic toy, compared to the luxury feel of the M8. And Sense 6 with the Black / White colors, looks very professional and polished, compared to the butt ugly nasty Touchwiz on my S4.

But I haven't really played with an S5 much, so I am comparing my M8 to S4 which isn't fair.

I just miss the lightweight feel of the S4, with the rounded corners, felt very good in the palm of the hand.

But this M8 has amazing battery life, almost near that of my old Note 2. Plus if I want a Nexus feel, I can easily flash the M8 GPE ROM which is great to have that option. But the water resistance and dust proof tech in the S5 is a very useful feature, as is the lighter feel in the hand, even with a case on the S5 will weigh less than the naked M8.

You should see Anand's recent article, clearly states there isn't a real pro our con to get either or, but there are some small things that will sway you.

M8 has the premium feel, unlocked boot loader.

S5 has the water proofing, removable battery and sd card.

You want root,decision is pretty clear IMO. But I agree, wait for One+ although it may be hard to get.

You should have just stayed with the S4, the upgrade you get with the M8 or S5 is minimal (depending on what you use your phone for). The much smaller bezel of the S4 is a lot more attractive than the S5.

I just dumped my Note 3 and am now rocking my N5... The whole KNOX warranty issue is lame, and I would assume it's present on the S5 as well, so on that issue alone I would naturally favor the M8... the pros/cons on each side really balance out so in the end it comes down to what you want to do with the phone. Listen to music? HTC One. Listen to music in the shower? S5.

People praise the camera on the Note 3 (isn't it the same camera as the S5?), but it's actually pretty terrible. Low light is painfully noisy, and the stock app makes a shutter sound, but doesn't actually take the photo for about another second- I have so many blurry photos because of this... so it's part hardware, part software. I previously had a HTC One (M7) and the large sensor + OIS made for awesome low light shots. Unfortunately they dumped OIS in favor of "duo camera" which the Google camera app can mimic simply by snapping a photo and raising the camera (see example shot below) a few inches and shooting another photo. It takes like half a second to go through the motions once you have it down.

Honestly, if I were you I would keep the M8 at this point and check out the Z2 rather than jumping into the S5. That's what I'm waiting for at least...

Keep the M8, as lots of issues with the S5 camera completely breaking and not returning after a full reset. Samsung are not remotely interested in this issue either - and dragging their heels, just like they did with the 4.4 update.

I have the M8 and really like it. Like you, I was unsure I made the right decision. I've been to Best Buy a couple times since getting the M8. Each time I would go check out the GS5. And every time I do, I walk away completely satisfied with my decision. The build quality and comfort of the M8 is second to none. It is a little heavy, but my previous phone was the Note 2, so I'm used to the weight.

I don't shower with my phone, but apparently many people do. As a dude, I guess I can understand why. ;)

I'd definitely keep the M8. No way you could be unhappy with it through your course of ownership. The few advantages that the S5 has over the M8 don't quite outweigh the disadvantages it has (at the moment), IMO. Those disadvantages being no root (on Verizon or AT&T at least), no unlocked bootloader (not really important for me anymore though with Wanam Xposed), mediocre speaker, inconsistent UI in terms of performance and design, and it seems that Samsung has been considerably slower at updating their flagships than HTC lately.

If the One had a SAMOLED display, then it would be no contest for me, as I still love the AMOLED on my current Note 2 (when not out in sunlight anyways). But AMOLED doesn't make up for all that stuff above to me. The M8 supporting SD cards was a surprising and well appreciated feature too, so I can take my 64GB SD card from my Note 2 to the M8 (if I get one.. not sure if it's worth upgrading to yet as I'm still happy with my Note 2).

Samsung's response to the issue:
Samsung is committed to providing the best experience for customers. We have learned that a limited number of Galaxy S 5 devices may have an issue that causes "Camera Failure" pop-up error message. We ask that customers affected call 1-888-987-4357 or visit their carrier for service under Samsung's standard limited warranty.

Vz's response:
Galaxy S5 customers who see "Warning: Camera Failed" please contact @VZWsupport & we'll work to resolve it, including replacing the device.

I don't even have a dog in this fight, but I dislike misinformation/fanboyism/whatever the hell your post is.

OP, since you already have the M8 and like it, I would keep it. If you're still unsure you made the right decision, ask to play with your coworker's S5 for an hour.

I don't even have a dog in this fight, but I dislike misinformation/fanboyism/whatever the hell your post is.

I don't have a horse in this game either, but sending a device in for regular warranty repair when it's clearly a widespread problem is a little lame- they should simply swap out the affected devices with a new device at the point of sale. I personally can't be without a phone for however long it takes for them to fix it and send it back to me.

This is exactly what the carriers are doing. At least I know Verizon is.

From other forums it sounds like if you're outside the 14-day return window Sprint is making customers go through Samsung for a warranty repair.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: to me, the One is just a more exciting device to own.

It does make some trade offs (camera cleverness over resolution, premium materials over lightweight design), but it simply feels special. Like it was built to be one person's dream phone instead of the byproduct of focus group testing. It has a more cohesive (and arguably less intrusive) interface, too. The GS5 is still a good phone, but I wouldn't jump ship from the One just to get it.

I think you've already made a good choice. Another thing you haven't pointed out is that the 32GB version of GS5 isn't available. Not bring about to APP2SD and having to move videos and photos off manually to the SD card would make the 16GB version a hassle for me. The amount of space TouchWiz left us with on the 16GB device is unacceptable.

OnePlus One will have a 64GB version for $349, which very well likely be sold out for a long time.

M8 is the better choice IMO.

My boss has the S5, and it's certainly a nice phone, but it feels like a Fischer price toy.

One minor thing, I like the look of the black colored S5 with a cool flat black case on it, looks very stealth and bad ass, and the phone sits flat on a desk with a case, easy to still use the phone flat. Where as the M8 is curved, and any case on the M8 immediately kills the great looks of the new One. Is funny, the S5 actually looks better with the right case on it, and the M8 only looks awesome naked, but is dangerous to run around with the M8 unprotected. I haven't see any good looking case for the M8 yet, they all destroy the beauty of the phone.

The Spigen M8 case is the poop, IMO

http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Spigen-HTC-One-M8-Slim-Armor-Case-Review_id3662

It's a high quality case and it really fits the phone well.

I will be the lone ranger... I would pick the S5. But this is coming from a person who has owned every galaxy series phone. I also have owned many of the HTC flagship phones starting with the Evo4G.

I actually prefer the light weight feeling of the GS3/4/5. Even with a quality case my phone weighs less than any HTC flagship phone.

That said, I bought a S5, and sold it to stick with my S4. Just not enough difference to make me want to switch. I have used the M8, and it felt clunky. It was heavy, felt hot in my palm, and the buttons were in worse spots compared to my s4.

I do not take the stock UI into consideration, that is almost always able to be changed at some point with different ROM's/tweaks.

Ever thought of using body skins? I have yet to see any proof that phone cases protects more than a skin would. I certainly would like companies like spigen to put money on where their mouths are and offer guaranteed protection akin to surge protector companies. I'm not saying phone cases are like snake oil. Just saying that someone needs to develop a standardized phone impact machine and put cases to the test. I've seen enough cracked screen from otter cases that I'm skeptical on whether they even work.

Okay so let's break this down according to your preferences.

1. Battery life: This is pretty much a push. Both devices have very good battery life. Most benchmarks show the M8 having slightly better life but most of the time it's less than 5%. really not a significant statistical difference.

TIE

2. Screen quality. Last year with the M7 versus the S4, the M7 had the nicer screen. The roles have reversed this year. While the M8 has a very good screen, samsung really knocked it out of the park this year with the S5. My girlfriend got the S5 a couple weeks ago, and I can't tell you how many times I stare at that screen with lust and envy. The screen gets ridiculously bright, ridiculously dim, the colors are fantastic, and if you want color accuracy, you can easily adjust the color pallette to your liking. There is simply no better screen on the market.

Winner: S5

3. Pocketable and good feel in hand, and weight in pants / shorts:

The winner of this category is "it depends". Obviously the M8 has a premium feel due to its materials and build quality (assuming you associate metal with quality). However, the M8 as you know is actually a very tall phone for having only a 5 inch screen. It's taller and thicker than the S5 despite having the smaller screen. It's also very heavy for a phone. I've held it plenty of times and it's a little awkward. Personally I feel the M7 felt better in hand. Going by dimensions and pocketability, the S5 feels better in hand. And if you're like the 95% of people out there who put cases on their phone, the M8 immediately loses it's "premium feel" advantage.

Winner: M8 (if you value build materials and the feeling of metal)
Winner: S5 (if you value a more pocketable and easy to hold phone, and you plan to put a case on it).

4. = Root option, to debloat the phone, and install apps like AdAway, and Greenify, and Xposed Framework

This is an easy win for the M8 as to be honest I'm not sure what the status is of root on the S5. While root is available for the international S5, I don't believe it's available yet for the carrier models. While I presume it will be avaible for the at&t model at some point, the M8 is the far more developer friendly phone at this point.

Personally, I feel that the more time passes and more phones advance, the less important rom'ing becomes. I previously owned the OG evo 4g and then the epic touch 4g and I must have flashed at least a hundred different roms on those phones over the years I owned them. I've now had a Verizon note 2 for the last 16 months and I never even bothered to root it. Why? Well partly because launchers have become so sophisticated that 95% of what was previously only possible on Roms is now available on launchers. Secondly, the #1 need I had for my rooted phone was mobile hotspotting which is now available to me on stock. Sure, there are several paid for root only apps that I wouldn't mind using again, you mentioned a few of them, but to be honest I don't miss them. I just tired of the hassle of dealing with a rooted phone and dealing with the headaches that came whenever there was a carrier update. But obviously, this area is hugely important to you.

Winner: M8

5. = Smoothness of the OS and UI, no lag, and good looking UI.

To answer this next question, allow me to quote you from an earlier thread:

Anyways I went to my local ATT store today to see the new HTC One M8 in person. And the M8 is a beauty, but did not blow me away or anything. The screen looked a bit washed out average, and it had a bit of lag swiping around. Overall I thought the M8 was nice, but nothing to blow me away, and it felt too tall and heavy for just a 5" screen. Then the ATT sales lady said they had the S5 too. Which I wasn't even one bit interested in at all. After seeing the S5 release all over the web, I felt it looked like a ho-hum minor update to the S4, nothing worth my time. Boy was I wrong.

The S5 was GORGEOUS :D They had it in white, and that screen :eek: Best smartphone screen I have ever seen. And the recent display reviews of the S5 also call it the best screen ever made for a smartphone, being the brightest ever manufactured, and deep colors, and more accurate whites finally. My face looked like a cartoon, with my jaw dropping down to the floor, I was that impressed with the screen.

And then Touchwiz, which I am no fan of, and especially the way Samsung hasn't really changed it's style or theme for years now. Well the TW on the S5 is tons better, like much much better looking. The flat look and style of the new S5 TW is so much cooler looking, and the menu and notification widgets just look more modern, and matching current Android. Where as TW on the Note 3 and S4 look super outdated and old fashioned now. And there was zero lag on this S5 test unit, it was warp speed fast.

Overall I left the ATT store, meant to see the HTC One M8, and not even caring to see the S5. But I am drooling for the S5 now.

So the general party line is that Sense 6 is lag free and wonderful whereas Touchwiz is a bloated fat pig of a skin with tons of lag. Well I ask you, are you going to believe what you saw with your own eyes or what you read in a blog somewhere? I'm honestly curious because this is what you yourself wrote. Sometime after that I'm assuming you read enough people telling you that touchwiz is laggy and then you changed your tune and then stated that touchwiz is slower. So tell me, are you the type of person who believes what people tell you to believe or are you the type of person who believes what they see with their own eyes?

Personally, I've played with my girlfriends S5 for hours and I've not noticed a hair of lag. Is it there? Maybe? Perhaps if I had one of those high speed cameras I might be able to detect a difference. But keep in mind, these phones have powerful CPUS which are going to provide good experiences for the vast majority of people. The whole cry of TW lag is way overblown IMO.

As far as the UI is concerned, for the majority of tech enthusiasts like ourselves, most of us will not even keep the stock skin. The second my girlfriend brought home her S5, I put Nova Prime on it. End of story.

Winner: TIE. Both phones are very responsive and secondly, for the OP, he's not going to be running sense or TW so it's immaterial.

In summary, you obviously can't go wrong with either phone. They sit at the top of the smartphone market and you will be happy with either.

If you value your top 3 items most of all, then the S5 probably sneaks out ahead. If you value the last 2 more, then the M8 is probably your best choice.

If you held a gun to my head, I would likely choose the S5 if only because the screen is the #1 thing we interact with and that screen is simply intoxicating. That said, I know that you are a poweruser and love to tweak your phone. Given that, it might be better for you to hang on to your M8.

Anyway, just my thoughts and 2 cents.

Great post Johnny78 :) Thanks.

OS / UI;

My gripe with Touchwiz stems more form my time with my ATT S4 running Touchwiz, and certain things just took too long to load, like the Dialer and Contacts app, seemed to always have to wait for those to load up, and annoyed me. But with the S5 being much faster hardware wise, plus running a newer upgraded Touchwiz, maybe that has gone away. But then again, my time with an S5 was like 5 minutes at the store, and it sure felt faster.

But the M8 with Sense 6 is very refreshing, feels closer to stock Android. Sense 6 feels like a lightly skinned Nexus phone, with the Sense features being nice welcome improvements, not gimmicks or crap. Where as Touchwiz always looked so strange and outdated looking or just a hodgepodge mix match of design, but I think the new TW on the S5 is much improved in that regard ?

Case on phone;

I am a 50% case user, over my years with Android phones, I always have a case brand new, but over the weeks and months with a new phone, that case comes off more often, to the point, after like 6 or 12 months I run the phone naked 75% of the time.

The M8 looks so beautiful naked, and a case just kills the look. But then I am super worried of dropping it too. Where the S5 naked to me looks average, and plane, but a nice case on the S5, can actually make it look better. And a good rubbery grippy case makes the phone feel really good in the hand.

Screen;

I value a good screen very high on my list, and a bright screen is very important. Which screen looks best outdoors ? My S4 sucks outdoors, and I thought the S5 just had a little better screen, but is the S5 screen truly night and day radically better than the S4 screen ?

The M8 looks significantly better outdoors than my S4. The M8 is the first phone I could use outdoors and still see pretty well, where the S4 at it's highest setting was very dim outdoors.

Rooting;

I like Rooting to help remove bloat, and install specific apps, but with launchers like Nova, root is needed less these days. But can we at least disable the crappy ATT apps on the S5 ? A custom Recovery for ROM'ing is a bonus and fun to have, but not a requirement for me.

Bottom line, I want the best screen for outdoor use, I want great battery life, I want a light weight phone in the pocket, that feels and looks good with a case, I want a UI with zero lag and absolute better smooth. Does the S5 or M8 fit those requirements better ?

Good post.

I agree with you heavily on the over blown "TW is laggy" crowd.

What ATT stuff can't be removed without root? I removed it all on my note 3 without root, is the S5 special?

Other "overblown" non-issues are the currently unavailable/vaporware 32GB model and how GS5's 16GB eMMC performance is lackluster. I think you and I have a different definition of "overblown." GS5 is selling like hotcakes and few customers care about those issues.

I don't think it's a coincidence that SamMobile is leaking information about the "GS5 Prime" right now. It could be that 32GB model with eMMC performance up to par among flagships with that killer 1440p screen. I doubt that TouchWiz would be fixed in time though...

Have to admit the battery life is crazy good on this M8 so far. Right now unplugged off charger for 13h with 55% battery left. I have 3h On Screen time, and all on 4G today, no Wi-Fi. This is Amazing battery life on this One.

I bought both and kept the M8 and gave the S5 to my dad. I would not trade him back for the S5 either. You can't really go wrong with either though. Having tried both sense6 and touchwiz I prefer sense6. The primary camera is good on both phones, while the self camera is way better on the HTC. UFocus is a very cool feature on the HTC but it is not perfect. I have also had some problems using the panoramic, although both phones will probably have some issues the way I am using it (like stitching 20 frames together). I will say that it is nice to be able to get usable pictures indoors now on the HTC. Outside the S5 is better due to it's higher resolution, and I think slightly better dynamic range.

Sound on the HTC is amazing, I feel like I will actually bother playing videos to other people now, as well as the ability to fill a room with music in a pinch (it's not a $200 bluetooth speaker, but certainly still impressive in a pinch).

HTC is built more solid.

S5 has a slightly better screen.

HTC probably has a better flashlight too.

HTC has an unlockable bootloader which is huge for me and was the tiebreaker in my case.

here are a couple samples I took with the HTC testing it indoors, ufocus, and panoramic. I didn't take a bunch to get a best shot, just how you can expect things to work when snapping off shots. Note that the panoramic didn't stitch perfectly (though easier to use than the S5's, not sure how the S5 compares here). The Ufocus missed the edge of the center glass, etc.

Was drinking when I snapped this one, had to boost the iso due to lower light levels.

Well, you could test this out pretty easily by dropping an M8 from three to four feet high on a parking lot, then put the phone through the test again with a minimal or bulky case.

I'm not saying you should, mind you, but I have a feeling that would illustrate the benefit of cases as you weep over your beautiful ruined metal finish.

Then again, no case will help you if you:
1. Never drop your phone
2. Drop your phone from an unreasonably high altitude or at a very unfortunate angle.

I've "dropped" my M8 from the top of my car with it falling off at around 22 MPH. Everything still works; no cracks; there is a scratch on the camera lens, but it's not on center where the sensor is. I've been meaning to take a few shots. But I haven't turned on my Nexus 5 for a while. I don't think my drop test could get much better with the number of bounces and spinning that other eyewitnesses perceived. And this happened without a case.

How about you drop your phone and let me if your phone case protected your device more so than without a case? And you're using fear to sell something that there's no evidence for. At least when you buy insurance, you get a guarantee. Has there been a case manufacturer to guarantee drop protection from certain types of drops? I'm glad you feel protected for buying something you can't proof. When there are evidence showing phones in cases still get cracked from 4ft falls, what evidence is there to support cases actually work?

[/B]

Don't forget that a custom recovery like TWRP will let you do full backups very quickly and painlessly. Restoring takes just a few minutes. Nice to have

A thicker case offers more protection than a thinner one. Cases with dual material (soft inner shell + hard outer) offer even more.

Its not up for debate, its a simple matter of physics.

JustIntoxicated, where are you?!? I want to be where you're at! LOL! Let's grab a few brews!

I'm in San Diego but those pictures are from Michigan last week. The lake was still frozen so we could not make it to mackinac island so we did a microbrew tour instead. I was there for my grandfathers memorial service but stayed a few extra days.

I ordered the clear Urban Armor Case, as I thought the Otterbox would be too thick for my needs.

I hate everything about Otter box cases. They cost a lot, too large in size and are terribly difficult to put together/take apart.

In just about every instance of someone using the Otter box case has had an instance of their phone breaking and I attribute that to a false sense of security. They see this big, fluffy case and imagine what ever is inside is infallible to breaking. Next thing you see is a crap ton of cracked screens.

The funniest sight to see is a Note 3 in an Otter Box case and a cracked screen. I work with someone who has this....

Two thin cases that intrigue me for the One M8;

Grey color Incipio Feather case;

Body Glove satin gel case, in Charcoal gray;

The first leaves the bottom exposed, but both of them look like they may make the buttons harder to press?

This is the one I am going to try in clear.

Go with the m8 hands down, but if you need a little push in
the right direction, then do it for less dropped calls?

I used to own an M7, and it was the best damned phone I ever had, with the exception of TWO things (which, unfortunately, were a fairly wide-spread problem with this phone.. Google it): the camera would just "occasionally" focus (most of the time, everything was way out of focus), and the purple haze that would be in all low-light shots. Not sure if the M8 corrects these issues... ??
