Hi guys, my rig is about 3 years old. Curious on maybe upgrading my video card.

I have an Aurora R3 with 875w power supply, it has 2 video slots, currently run one gtx580, it seems to be nearly impossible to find a second gtx 580 to do sli but wondering what would be a good card available to swap out one gtx 580 to have a quite noticable performance jump? also dont want to break the bank too bad on cost.

How much are you willing to spend OP? What's the MAX your budget will allow? Also would you rather stick with Nvidia or are you willing to give AMD try? What are the specs for your system?

I like to stick with nvidia always been a fan..

i guess 500 or less.

wondering if a better option would be to do sli gtx580's or one 770 or something. hmm

but i also worry about too much Heat and power usage with 2 580s.

If you're willing to go up to $500 US you can step into a GTX 780. If you game at 1080p it will be able to push almost every game out there on the highest settings with low to moderate levels of AA. At 1440p you might have to make some compromises somewhere, but nothing too drastic.

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 OC REV2.0 (Windforce Cooler), $499.99 US at NCIXUS (no tax, free shipping available)
EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Superclocked (EVGA ACX Cooler), $499.99 US after $20 MIR at NCIXUS

Looks like the above prices are only good through next Wednesday.

Get a 780. 770 is an overclocked 680, which wasn't a terribly large upgrade from 580 (though quite good from an efficiency and temperature standpoint). Overclock that 780 to get almost the same performance as a 580 SLI, but with a much cooler and quieter experience.

If you only like new, I would go with what armenius is suggesting. If you can go used, get two 680's and sli them. Much better performance than a 780. But this is only if you don't value energy. Best bang for buck is two used 680's.

just replaced my 580 with a 780Ti
as some one said the 780 may be the right card for you is an upgrade all around any thing else wont be as big or only a sidegrade

so its been a year, I didn't buy anything. I'm looking again. Anything new on the market now to consider over the 780ti or 290X?

The price of a good upgrade for you has fallen to around $300, so there is that benefit in waiting :D

GTX 970 is an excellent deal at a little over $300, as is the 290X at a slightly lower price. Get the 970 if power consumption is a problem, otherwise the 290X is good. They trade places in terms of speed depending on the game and resolution, so either one will work. And don't sweat the GTX 970 "3.5GB" issue - the card plays games just fine unless you're intending to drive a 4k monitor maxed-out with SLI, which it sounds like you're not.

Both will give you a massive upgrade for a reasonable price.

The GTX 780 Ti is outdated, and will probably be slightly slower than a 970 in newer games. Don't bother unless you find an incredible deal (~$250 or less).

If you want to play the waiting game you can wait for the new cards due out in June, but I don't expect that to affect prices on the $300 cards much (only the incredibly overpriced GTX 980 will be affected). Expect those new cards to be at least as expensive as the GTX 980.

Did I miss the resolution and games played? For instance I have a gtx 760TI and at 1080p it runs great I swapped it out for a gtx Titan X and can't tell much of a change at 1080p but games I can run at 4k are really awesome. What I am getting at is think about what kind of performance you need to justify the cost of upgrade and do you need new features for some reason. For me I had 1k in petty cash sitting around and I wanted to play with my new 4k TV and needed HDMI 2.0 to do so.

Another side note a friend of mine with 2 gtx 680 in sli with. 30" monitor says a Titan X doubled his FPS in the games he plays and 999.99 + tax was well worth it.

I am selling a gtx 760ti for $120 shipped anywhere in U.S.

970 or 290x. Depending on how much vram you require. 390X amd 980Ti coming soon.

As always it depends on resolution, budget, games you play, etc.

At the very least a GTX 960. As its faster specially in newer games and even more so when overclocked.

Sweetspot would be either a 290X or a GTX970.

you can get a non-ref R9 290 for as little as 230$ new on Newegg, providing at least double the performance of your 580. Otherwise 290X or 970 is the sweet spot and what a lot of people are buying.

980 is not a great deal compared to those with only a modest performance boost over the 970. The AMD 3xx flagship and 980ti will be great performers, but unless AMD decides to completely spit in Nvidia's face both of those will probably cost 700$+

Who is recommending 780 when 970 is available? At least get the latest gen if buying new. And absolutely not 960 that's a 128-bit card.

Noone is recommending a 780. Look at the dates.

Rats. I did note that the thank you post was from OP! They need to color code the posts ... the older they are the more faded the text ...
