I am seeing some low prices on the se3016 Expander systems on ebay one seller is selling for $139 with free shipping, this low price will allow me to invest in a better RAID card
I am looking to get a RAID card that can handle 3TB and 4TB Drives with SFF8088 external ports

any suggestions on what RAID card would work best with this?
any info would be greatly appreciated

Megaraid based.

LSI Logic MegaRAID PCIe 8-Port SAS 9280-4I4E

Gives you internal and external ports. Only need one external port, and this model tends to be the cheapest 9280 series you can find.

thanks for the info

i see on ebay the 9280-4I4E cards are selling for $300ea and the se3016 at $130

Total of $430 for 16 Bay Storage Arrays works out well!

I'm a little inexperienced so please forgive my questions.

I'm very intrigued by this setup. I currently have an IBM m1015 (Flashed to IT mode) in an old desktop (serving as a file server). If I purchased the se3016, it has to be connected via SAS cable in conjunction with a desktop running an OS, correct?

Can the 9280 be flashed to IT Mode (assuming it just shows up in Windows as a drive)?

Yes, the SE3016 is just direct attached storage. It requires an OS. I've used it for FreeNAS, Windows, etc. You could use the M1015 with it if you wanted, only reason I suggest the 9280 is because it's a fast raid card. Just use a dumb HBA (M1015) if you want to do ZFS, if you want regular raid, look into the 9280, or the 9260 series even.

Thanks for the post. If I am running Windows 7 and using the M1015, I can still do a RAID6 or no?

If the M1015 does RAID 6, sure. Or if you mean RAIDZ2, sure.

I will be using a M1015 (in IT mode). Due to only having one server (older computer) at the moment, I need it to stay in a Windows environment.

From what it sounds like, when I connect this to my M1015 it will show up as one large drive or single drives? Can FlexRaid take advantage of all the drives through the se3016?

If it's in IT mode it's my understanding that whatever drives you have plugged in will show up individually.
