HTC One (2014) Watch Thread

Really for me it comes down to better speakers or better display, because I really love the AMOLEDs properties. But I haven't see the One in person, so I can't say really how much different it looks in person. I do listen to a lot of media on my phone though, so I would definitely make use of those speakers. Oh, and I really like the headphone jack on the bottom of the One. It's on the top of my Note 2 and I hate using headphones with it. Kinda makes me miss my Gnex in that regard. ROMing is not so important for me anymore. I was a big ROMer on my Gnex and when I first got my Note 2, but now that I've found Wanam Xposed, all I need is root and I can pretty much customize the stock ROM to my liking and with any additional features that other custom ROMs give me. I don't' have time to be backing up, flashing, restoring, setting up, then troubleshooting any issues associated with a lot of ROMs.

You absolutely have to give it a spin in person. It's not perfect (the texture, at least on the gunmetal grey model, is a bit too smooth), but good grief the One looks and feel good. It has the kind of craftsmanship that luxury manufacturers like Vertu should be using.

For those who have purchased from Best Buy, can you take advantage of the BOGO offer through BB?

Just got mine today for VW with the Dot View case.

The phone is fantastic, build quality and the curvature of the back is spot on to fit in your hand.

The speakers do not seem to be that loud to me, they really seem no louder than any other phone at max volume, but they are crystal clear which (to me) gives a sense of being louder when they really are not.

Everything else is like what the reviews say but I want to talk about the Dot View Case.

GOOD:

The case or what really is a cover is very thin. It is almost the thickness of your standard U.S. Passport for a reference.

The quality is really great, it feels good and should have no problem with lasting a while under good use.

The display really does act like the video reviews and has not failed me at all.

Making a call with it covered was easy as the automated voice tells you what you are doing/calling.

The case covers the entire back and front and seems to hold the phone fine. (more one this)

NOT GOOD:

The case only coveres the front and back and the one side. It does not cover the right side of the phone at all.

The holes where the speakers are are not bigger, and you can tell that it is blocking some sound.

BAD:

If you drop it, this case will NOT protect the phone. It will easily pop out. Since it is not thick at all the level of protection is very small. The phone is held in by the corners only, and barely.

The cover part, while semi-stiff, can bend easy and offers no protection if hit by a blunt object.

If you like using one hand to operate a phone Do NOT buy this case. The cover automatically shuts on its own when released. (The only positive I see about this, is that it will be literally impossible to text while driving.)

The cover does NOT bend all the way back to use with one hand easily. Since the phone has a curved back it does not wrap all the way around without some force and does not lock into place

Even when shut, there is no magnet or anything holding the cover part down, so at first it seems to not sit flush, which after use, seems to be better.

VERDICT:

If you are a one hand user, it is a no go

If you need definite protection, it is a no go

If you want a "cool" case, it is for you

if you are not worried about total protection, it is for you.

All in all, i really like it but from a user standpoint is a fail and almost seems like a gimmick. Even though it has taken some getting used do it does what I need it do but not exactly what I want it to do. It really is a shame you cant use it with one hand comfortably as that is a huge drawback. I didn't want a thick case or cover so I thought this was great at 35 bucks and seems it will do a good job for my needs. I think most will hate it sadly.

1. Can you actually use this phone one-handed without the case unless you have huge NBA hands? It's got the speakers and logo bezel and that 5.0" screen!
2. Aside from cosmetic protection, no case has been proven to protect any phone.
3. No argument from me.
4. Even "totally" protected phones suffers from screen cracks and other problems. Once again, there is no proof that any phone case actually protects phone from damage other than surface damage.

5. Since phone cases don't really protect anyway, all cases are basically gimmicks. Body skins are just as good as cases due to lack of evidence that proves phone cases are any good; and body skin keeps your device thin.

So what makes this case stand out is that it adds additional functions. The most important one is you can keep the screen guard on and still answer the phone and sound good while at it. No ear grease on the screen!

I doubt very many people can one-hand this phone to begin with. So its one-hand comfortability is fail to begin with just like all these 5" flagships. 4.7" probably is the max comfortable one-handed use size.

Would I suggest other with HTC One to get this case? No. I wish there's a Dot View Case with a stand.

Due to quality of the speakers, I wanted to use the One as my USB PC speakers. I've looked into making the HTC One into an audio playback device when connected via USB, but that would overwrite HTC's "Android Phone USB Device" driver. So until HTC makes it happen for us, I cannot reverse engineer it. So the only solution is making a PC playback server app and connect via network.

After just over an hour of coding something on my own, one of my pals found this app SoundWire that does just that! So now, everything is awesome!

Note: To reduce latency, the buffer size need to be set as low as possible. On the One, the lowest possible size is 14k, although you actually do set 8k.

But I was able to do that with a $3 ebay flip case for my GS3. As long as the cover has cutouts for speaker/mic, sound is not affected.

I think flip cases are an awesome idea, and Samsung needs to get credit for them, they were the first to do it, right?

Not even close.

Flip cases have been around forever.

Not even close...

Flip cases have been around forever.
While 3rd party folio cases have been area since the invention of palm pilots, I don't believe you can discount that Samsung did with their first party Flip Covers. This is one of the first cases to buy a first party accessory. (see what I did there? :p)

The Dot View Case also has an advantage of being touch sensitive. The unfortunate part is that HTC isn't using an OLED type screen, so it doesn't actually save any power with "partial" backlighting. But with Samsung not selling any AMOLED screens to their competitors, I don't see how you can blame HTC. Under full backlighting, the SLCD is still more efficient, but AMOLED is advancing at a faster pace while LCD is nearing its end of making any additional improvements.

Why did HTC not make all the color options available across all carriers?! I want to get a silver One M8 on Sprint but they only have Gunmetal and only Verizon has the Silver. While waiting for the silver edition, they run the risk of losing customers like myself to the GS5 or, god forbid I'm still waiting, the LG G3.

The gunmetal looks nicer anyways, having seen them both in person, the silver is more of a flat dull finish where the gunmetal is brushed. Or am I missing something beyond the way they look? The silver might be ever so slightly more grippy or something but it is still smooth.
And you can get two for $149 if you use the code VERIZON30. Each phone has to be with a new contract though.

Crap their website had some sort of bug that kept enabling verizon edge instead of the contract pricing, so I had to use an alternate ordering site. I did not see a place to use the coupon on the alternate site. It was really frustrating since it took several hours to get my order to go through... Trying to cancel my order now.

It can't be said enough but it is amazing they are upping the anty on front facing cameras, I hope more follow through with this.

The fabled Amazon phone supposedly have a 12 MP front and a 13 MP back camera.

Ok so I was able to cancel my order but the retail site is not allowing anyone to purchase the BOGO deal, so you have to use the preorder site and on that site there is no place to enter the promotional code.

Suggestions?

I suppose the HTC One (M8) is mine now... I dropped it, from the top of a moving vehicle, at 20+ mph! When it hit the ground, it rang a loud thud. There were people around thinking I hit something, including one who saw my phone bounce around on the pavement, evidently stopping in a puddle about 10 yards+ from ground zero.

I will take pictures as soon as I get a replacement phone. I didn't bring my bought straight from Google Nexus 5 with me.

Phone clearly landed on bottom, bounced on the right side, and slid across on the bottom. Surprisingly camera still works, usb charged and handphone jack still work despite being submerged in water for about 5 minutes (took me that long to find it - felt like forever), everything works. Oh, the screen, not cracked! The worst I've ever dropped a phone or something on my phone. I've dropped a porcelain cup on my Nexus 5, my previous worst drop ever.

Wanted to bump this thread since I have my Verizon One M8 on the way! Should arrive at my house on Wednesday and I can't wait!

If anyone (Justintoxicated?) has the Verizon One and has rooted/ROM'd the phone already (with S-Off and such) and has any tips/links, it'd be much appreciated! I found this guide on XDA and think I can handle it, but any other input on it would be great. If I can just root the stock ROM and do some light mods on it (unlock native tethering, customize notification shade toggles, etc), that would probably be ideal. I'm used to having my Note 2 on its stock ROM and using Wanam Xposed, so if there's anything similar to that for the One M8, that would be preferable.

It has IR sensors for a 3D interface, it doesn't take 3D photos.

Thank you for correcting a post made almost 2 months ago back when these things were rumor.

Anyone see this? I just found out about this:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8071/htc-launches-the-one-e8

The HTC One E8 (wtf HTC )

Anyways for a decent chunk of cash less ($200 less?) you lose the Metal Unibody, AC and the 4MP doohiky camera. Basically the same phone except they stripped the most expensive parts of the phone and because its plastic its a whopping 10% lighter. If they did this, changed the dimensions to 4.5" 720p screen and called it the Mini they would have a great line up.

Decided to try out one of the new 4.4.3 GPE ROM's, wow I thought I liked Sense 6, but 4.4.3 is great. Sticking with this for sure. This phone + 4.4.3 GPE is the best :D

I tried several 4.4.2 GPE ROM's earlier, didn't like them, but 4.4.3 just feels so much better, and nice tweaks to the Dialer , Contacts, and Messaging, and the extra polish Google did to Kit Kat shines in 4.4.3.

This ROM is what I am running;

The new GPE 4.4.3 ROM's are great for battery life so far. After my first day on this ROM, below is my battery life, 21h 55m and still 27% left. With 4-1/2 hours Screen Time On, looks like I can get a total of 6+ hours screen time on and more :)

And this was mainly on the 4G network, only like an hour or two on WiFi, with 20 hours on mobile network.

Do you still have the double tap/swipe to wake feature on the GPE ROMs? If so, I may try one out on my Verizon One M8. Though I'm more concerned about GPE ROMs on a Verizon phone since it seems there's some more intense modding of the ROM in order to get it to work properly on a CDMA phone somehow. I would think the OS wouldn't have much to do with the baseband/radio configuration and firmware. But reading through one of the GPE ROM threads for the Verizon M8 kinda scarred me away from it with all the bugs people were experiencing on it. Not sure if that's still the case right now on 4.4.3.

Yes the double tap to wake works on GPE, it has built-in ' Motion launch ' features standard. But if you are a Verizon customer, it seems any Nexus phone, or even GPE phones isn't meant for CDMA carriers. Yeah GPE ROM's will work somewhat on CMDA phones, but they all seem to have issues, and are never direct port, and never designed 100% for a Verizon phone, like they are for ATT or T-Mobile.

I am running this ROM;

Just got an ota update on my Sprint HTC One M8. Network connectivity bug fixes supposedly. I wonder if it's that network optimizer that only works like 60% of the time.

What optimizer is that? One of the few oddities of this phone that I've had; very sporadic handoffs between 4G/3G/1x. My Note 2 would normally keep 1-2 bars of LTE at my desk at work, where my M8 will constantly switch between 4G/3G and sometimes drop down to 1x. I'm on my 3rd M8 (1st had blown top speaker, 2nd had bad glass separation issue at the top of the display), so I'd rather not try to change this one out again. :(

Seems like something that could be fixed in software though, because otherwise my phone gets about the same reception as my wife's GS4.

I just noticed that my speaker grills have some ear cheese (dead skin) clogged in them and am wondering what the best method would be to clean them out. I'm thinking the crevice tool on my vacuum cleaner..? Somehow doubt that'll work.. don't think I want to poke anything into it and push all the dead skin into the phone, hah.

Also, does anyone's M8 do a notification tone whenever your data network changes (like from 4G to 3G)? Mine is annoying me because I think I got a real notification, but it just dropped down to 3G at my desk. Not sure if it's something I have configured in Sense Tools or Gravity Box or something.

That's nasty. Scrub your ears everyday with a towel to prevent that. A vacuum should get it out but start out at a safe distance and bring slowly closer until it dislodges but be careful too much suction might tear something like speaker diaphragm.

It's normal. I clean and Q-Tip my ears every morning when I get out of the shower. Everyone's phone that I look at has the same dead skin all in and around the earpiece. It's rarely excessive (as mine isn't either), just noticeable if you look closely at the crevices around the earpiece of the phone. On my Note 2, I could just dig it out with my fingernail to clean it up, but the small holes on the M8 don't allow me to do this.

The battery life on this One M8 is just amazing

Unplugged off the charger for 20 hours now, and with 19% battery left, I am at 5h 48m Screen On time. This phone easily gets well over 6h On Screen time, sometimes I can get 7h :D

I'd say this One M8 rivals the beastly Note 2 battery life, which IMO was one of the best Android phones ever for battery life.

Sprint just rolled out another OTA (2.16.651.4). This time it includes Wi-Fi calling (that also works internationally).

Rumors suggests Android 4.4.4 update is coming next month.

I have had this HTC One M8 for five months now, and it still impresses me :D

I just installed a fresh 'GPE' ROM on Monday, and look at these battery life results, this compares to my old Galaxy Note 2, which was a beast on battery.

I unplugged my phone yesterday off the charger at 6:00am, and didn't charge again until bedtime at 11:00pm. I got 6h On Screen time, and total usage of 17 hours. And it was a workday, so major use nonstop for work, two hours of phone calls, hundred texts, GPS Navigation, plenty of web use looking up Vendor sites, etc... And most of this was on the 4G LTE network, only a couple hours of this on WiFi.

Careful now, before the alleged Samsung shills, you know who they are, accuse you of being a HTC shill

Oh, beep, you created another thread too! Ha ha ha

No, the cyanogen did not give you twice the battery life from a GPe. Totally different usage. His screen is on twice as much, and he uses a beta version of Chrome (most likely battery draining), and maps. Where as you hardly did anything...

But I'm glad you like it. As you most likely wouldn't be going to an iPhone.
