I have just received 3 MD1000's full of 1tb Drives.
I am debating to use it at home as storage connected to a 1950 or 2950.

I have been searching on-line but unable to find anything. Looking to see if there is a way like within a standard PC to spin down drives when not being used for a certain amount of time. Thus saving power.

Does anyone have any experience with this for the Dell power vault MD1000?

I imagine as long as your raid card supports it, it should be fine.

You could send one to me, lol.

Get a sas hba, a older server with at least 16gb memory and explore zfs. Dont think that it'll help you with saving power but itll be a really fast nas. Haha.

Opensolaris can spin down drives in a zfs array.

issue with older servers is power draw. im looking to replace the 2950 with an R710 maybe as a controller. just the cost is a bit high for my justification.

also Phog. I have been unable to find out where in a Perc6 it can power down drives not in use. maybe as JBOD. though haven't tested that yet.

Yeah, not sure on that, and I wonder if you'd have 3TB+ capacity issues on the Perc6, not positive where it stands, could just be an easy firmware update. I use the H700 with 3TB+ and it spins down correctly. It should be able to spin down external storage as well. Only thing I would be wary of is the speed of the drives in the MD1000, not sure if it supports 3GB/s SATA or not.
