Isn't it supposed to be out today?
Follow along with the video below to see how to install our site as a web app on your home screen.

The "Update 1" is not being promoted by MS as some new version. It's simply an update, not unlike other updates delivered through WU, except it's many times the typical update size. It's not even a new build number, still 9600.I don't get that. Windows 8.1 is Store. Windows 8.1 Update 1 is WU. That's where they lost a lot of people with Windows 8 - consistency.
My question is, where is the start menu after installing?????? I thought after the install, a click, and poof it would be there. But it is the same old interface, and I cannot find the proper toggle for it to be the new start menu.
Re-watch the announcement at BUILD. You missed a key distinction. My question is, where is the start menu after installing?????? I thought after the install, a click, and poof it would be there. But it is the same old interface, and I cannot find the proper toggle for it to be the new start menu.
Re-watch the announcement at BUILD. You missed a key distinction.
- They announced Update 1, which you just installed and are using now, with a pile of new desktop enhancements.
- They also announced a FUTURE update that would add a new type of Start menu + windowed modern applications.
There is a known issue which causes some PCs updated with the Windows 8.1 Update to stop scanning against Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 (WSUS 3.0 SP2 or WSUS 3.2) servers which are configured to use SSL and have not enabled TLS 1.2.
Get the ISO. Plan to to do a clean install with the 8.1.1 ISO.
Is there a way to get the ISO, without being an TechNet/MSDN member? I'm looking for the Windows 8.1 with Update 1 and all the updates included , not regular 8.1
Thanks
It is just an update. Not like 8.1 where it was a literal OS replacement.
The ISO for 8.1u1 is not even on VLSC yet.
Desktop apps are now the defaults for all file types except PDFs.
My disk footprint dropped 5 GB after update.. plus the OS sits on a 1tb drive... so I don't care. lol
I could see on a space limited SSD.
What is a reputable ISO to USB burning software? I found an ISO with all the updates, I just need to know what you enthusiasts are using to burn the ISO onto a USB stick?
Thanks
What's not in this 8.1 Update:
- Start Menu
- Windowed modern apps
What's in this 8.1 Update:
- Both desktop and modern apps can now display and be pinned on the taskbar and the taskbar is always available even in full screen modern apps by dragging the mouse past the edge of the screen where the taskbar is docked. It behaves similarly to having the taskbar set to autohide on the desktop.
- Modern apps now have overlay chrome when used with a mouse that provide a program icon on the upper left and close and minimize buttons on the upper right
- The Start Screen now uses a desktop context menu when tiles are manipulated with a mouse
- Desktop apps are now the defaults for all file types except PDFs.
Though the Start Menu isn't in this release this update without question makes things more familiar for keyboard and mouse users without changing the touch experience. Most all Windows users are familiar with switching programs via mouse using the taskbar and closing and minimizing programs with the upper right control box.
Yay, USB ports on my Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 after update...and under device manager they are listed as unknown devices.
Yes you get the close X on apps now but the app still goes to standby mode which still uses mem.
Suspend mode doesn't use memory, or uses an extremely minimal amount, depending on the type of suspend.
You have 16 GB of RAM. Use it.

This works fine. Until you're looking at a taskbar with 15 'suspended' apps for that single one... (I suspend my apps for the most part).
