Looking to mount my SE3016's in my rack. They came with rack ears on the front but no rails, and I'm not finding any mention of rails online. Am I just screwing the rack ears to the front rack posts and moving on with my day or are there rails that work with these?

To confirm are you talking about a linksys SE3016 network switch? or something else?

Afaict network switches are light enough that bolting them to just the front rails is perfectly fine.

On the other hand if you are talking about the oministor SE3016 (just noticed this in a second look at the google results) there is no way i'd want to support that merely by front rack ears. I'd at the very least want some kind of shelf benearth it.

No, he's talking about the rackable systems jbods by the name model number. I personally wouldn't be comfortable hanging them just off the ears especially when filled with drives.

It should be perfectly fine.

The drives are in the front, there is no weight in the back, they are only half depth units.
They are 4u heigh, it's not like the lack of weight in the back, is going get any leverage on it.

For what it's worth in the data center I use there's a cabinet full of these that are mounted via just the ears. They've been like that for at least a couple of years.

I have mine just by the ears, but then again it's on the bottom of the rack.

Yep, sorry, I'm talking about the popular rackable/SGI/omnistor 3U 16 drive SAS disk shelves, I had forgotten about the Linksys switches with the same model number.

I'm perfectly fine with mounting them by the ears, (yes almost all of the weight is right at the front), I was just wondering if there were other alternatives available as it's nice to be able to slide them out instead of fully unrack in the unlikely event you need to get inside to replace a power supply, expander, cable, etc...

Mounting by the heavily built ears especially with the heavier M6 rack/cage nuts won't be a problem, just not as nice.

You can buy generic "shelf" rails that span a four post rack. You basically just lay the unit on them. $30 on Amazon or something.
