A new study found that violent video games lead to aggression... if you are an incompetent boob. Thanks to Jereme P. for the heads up.

Feelings of aggression after playing video games are more likely to be linked to gameplay mechanics rather than violent content, a study suggests. Researchers carried out a range of tests, including making a non-violent version of popular game Half-Life 2. Games modified to have counter-intuitive, frustrating controls - leading to feelings of incompetence - produced more aggressive reactions.

This is why I only play Goat Simulator now. No point in raging when nobody is really sure how it is supposed to work.

I must be incompetent then... because when I'm in first place and that damn blue turtle shell comes and blasts me ruining my victory I can rage a bit. Although strangely when I'm playing with others not so much, just when the incompetent computer is playing me :D

Follow up study, which generates greater feelings of aggression in a team setting:
Being the incompetent noob OR Being competent and having to play with incompetent noobs on your team?

Bonus question:
Does a competent player feel more aggression towards an opposing team or their own incompetent teammates?

My takeaway: Game makers with terrible UI/controls should be charged with inciting murder.

This isnt anything new. This is why so many games are play to win. Hard games frustrate a lot of people, and it isnt great for sales either. It's a growing problem that a lot of people expect to win, despite their short comings. They dont want to improve or believe they need to. This is why some people resort to cheating, or why some people grind based games.

Some of us enjoy a challenge, and some of us dont want to believe they're lesser skilled.

Meta Question: Does the inward or outward perception of competence influence the outcomes of the follow up and bonus study?

Propose we use League of Legends or other MOBA for these studies

I can't speak for others but I stopped playing BF3/4 (and MP in general) partly because I was constantly frustrated and angry at how stupid and incompetent my team mates generally were.

(And I know I wasn't the boob because I was usually the (only) one PTFO).

Take sports, board games (monopoly rage?) or anything with some competitive element or frustrating mechanics and you would have the same result under the same circumstances. Basically there's nothing unique to video games here.

The real reason the creator of Flappy Bird pulled it... he couldn't handle being responsible for all those murders around the world.

um, duh.

frustration -> anger -> violence

We have a society that is more and more pushing the idea that success beyond other people is evil because of socialist ideals. It's pushed ever harder in the schools. So, people have less to strive for unless they just disregard what society says. For people who both care what society thinks of them and want to work hard to succeed, this leads to a very frustrating life. Some people wind up getting too frustrated and they lash out as society as a whole. How? mass murder and suicide.

It has nothing to do with video games, and everything to do with frustration.

Nobody has issue at success beyond others...
Success at the expense of others is a different story.

There's a big time push to punish "the rich" in general, no matter where or how they got their money. That's making success over others evil.

There will always be people who are jealous of others doing well, but the socialist viewpoint that is being pushed at schools (my nieces and nephews being in school recently have taught me this) is what is breeding this point of view.

These are my biggest problems with games today. I don't mind being challenged, or even having my ass handed to me. My biggest frustration always comes with having to fight with the interface. I also do not understand the reasoning behind locking down control schemes.

We focused on the motives of people who play electronic games and found players have a psychological need to come out on top when playing,
Are you saying people have propensity to win? Stop the frakking press, this is hot news!

I was constantly frustrated and angry at how stupid and incompetent my team mates generally were.

I've had this experience playing Quake 3 CTF. You can't score if the other team has your flag all the time, so I'd get stuck playing defense forever because nobody else either would or could, but then we never scored points because nobody could play offense either.

I can't say my team ever sucked playing Rocket Arena 2 though. We were all about equally skilled. Those were good times.

I'm sure that you are one of the "rich" and are speaking from experience /sarcasm. Sounds more like what Fox wants you to believe, this mythical perception that everyone is out to get those who are successful.

I come from a family that is well to do and no one is complaining. Inherently that also means I know a number of people with the same status. The only people that have your sentiment are those that have bought into the insanity of the Teaparty.

Tax code is still written for citizens with wealth. It's far easier to generate more assets when wealthy. No one in that class is looking around corner's for boogymen out to get them - unless its an ideological fallacy.

Just couldn't resist the urge to rant about a lot of irrelevant, stupid bullshit?

I'm white, single, no kids, and making a bit more than average income. I'm certainly not part of the 1%. However, I want to move forward in my career, but there are fewer and fewer positions open each month, and there is a downward pressure on pay for people in my position.

Computer support is a valuable talent, and people keep pushing for entry level computer support positions to get down to minimum wage jobs. Computer support is certainly far more valuable than flipping burgers or stocking shelves, or even assembling a car. (I got an email today for a recruiter asking for techs with 5 years of experience, and offering $16/hour with no benefits. With a minimum of 5 years of experience! It is a State government job, too! That was flat out insulting to all techs in the field. Unfortunately, offers like this are becoming more frequent.) It's a tough job, has a lot of stress, and takes a lot of brain power compared to the average person. It's deserving of far more than minimum wage to start.

Much of this pressure is coming from people who want to push the minimum wage up to what they call "living wage." They say things like "I know a guy who makes $18/hr on computer support, why can we get that?" as if their burger flipping was worth that much. Minimum wage jobs are for learning how to work, for teenagers who don't work full time and haven't entered the regular workforce. Adults taking and keeping jobs like this is a horrible sign for this country. They should be enhancing their skills and moving out of those jobs, even building their own businesses!

The movement in this country to hand over more and more power to the government is not only at the federal level, but also at state and local levels. The costs of getting a small business started were already pretty high back in the 90s, and back then, at least in Denver, the government side costs were less than $100. Now, the cost to get a small business started in Denver is over $6000, when figuring in permits and tax documents, and now this idiotic state requirement of having to pass a certain accounting knowledge certification. It takes months to even schedule the cert, and even more months to get the permits and licenses. That doesn't include the additional costs if your business requires health department inspections (restaurants, hair salons, nail salons, pet shops, and an ever expanding etc) or safety inspections (once hardly even known and now includes furniture building, anything with a delivery or transport car or truck, martial arts or yoga studio, and an ever expanding etc.) Most of the suburbs have followed suit to one extent or another. Even in one of the most conservative suburbs, Parker, the costs to open a computer support business is over $3000, mostly from state requirements, but also from two city permits totaling over $600. My dad found out the hard way that even repairing and flipping houses now constitutes an official business, and requires five state permits. This was unheard of in the 90s, and it's all been in the name of "regulation."

It used to be that if someone couldn't find a job, they could at least get some small business started to make ends meet, and if it became successful, well, great. Now, if one can't find a job, they certainly wouldn't have the money to even get past the government to get it started. So, the only choice is unemployment or welfare. After that, people are stuck in a hole, unable to get a job and unable to start their own business, forever a slave to voting Democrat and having their whole miserable, poor life paid for by the government. Succeeding is quickly becoming a pipe dream for many people, and government help is a dreadful trap.

How is this affecting me? More and more people are staying where they are, not moving forward, because the government is stifling business and the media and educational system is practically criminalizing succeeding in any level. So, I can't move forward. The system admin jobs that are out there are being held by people who could become managers, but are too afraid to do so because they don't want to pass that dreaded six figure pay rate and actually pay more in taxes and end of taking home less.

As for the Tea Party, I have certainly bought into that. Do you really think it's a good idea to spend our way into a debt that would take centuries to repay or a massive currency devaluation to clear? I'd rather not have inflation suddenly to reach into the 100%+ range. It has happened in history in many countries, many successful countries. It came close to happening here in the early 80s because of Carter. The massive inflation we saw there was entirely due to his policies. It is now likely to happen here within the next decade, thanks to people not listening to the Tea Party. This idiot in the White House has already run us past the point to cause this, and it'll all be blamed on whoever follows him because it won't hit for another few years. In ten years, it'll cost us $50 to get a fast food lunch, and that's only if we're able to stop his plans of totally plundering the country. If the Democrats win the House in the next election, nothing will stop their spending, and this country will fall into hyperinflation and we'll have food riots in the streets before 2020.

Politics in this thread? Seriously, isn't there a CNN article or something you can text wall with government this and party that?

This kind of post should be bannable.

So if the game sucks (Adventures of Lolo) and the controls suck, im incompetant. Ah Ok:rolleyes:

Completely false. Tax brackets are marginal and high rates are only paid on income above each threshold, which you might know if you didn't get your information from compulsive liars/drug addicts/kiddie diddlers on AM radio. Rush and a McDonalds burger flipper pay the same rate on their first taxable dollar. Rush pays effectively less, because he can get bullshit deductions that a burger flipper can't, like mortgage interest.

They should have another study: Aggression on message boards linked to off-topic political thread crapping.

This doesn't apply to just video games, I've been involved with some serious monopoly players who raged when someone else was able to obtain a whole side of properties before they could.

Same for scrabble, same for gambling, same for a lot of things. Oh look I just un generalised this study.

I'd argue that most aggression is linked to incompetence. Or at the very least ignorance and immaturity.

What the article is actually saying is that not doing well in a game due to illogical/uncomfortable controls makes a person feel incompetent, which in turn increases frustration and aggression. Title of the post was a clickbait. I think Steve likes watching discussions devolve into the kind of thing we see here when he posts news articles :p.

Guess I am not an incompetent boob... I mean, I do rage at games some times but it doesn't effect my social behavior outside of video games lol. Some people talk virtual lives way too seriously.
