April Fool's Day joke or not, I can see some company actually trying to make something like this.

I and I am sure many others thought of this idea many years ago. The tech exists today to make it happen.
I race cars as an amateur and thought about having a drone constantly point its camera toward me as I go around the track, occasionally moving to different regions of the track while still maintaining camera focus on my car... Shouldn't be impossible to do...today. It could be used in all sort of events in the same fashion. No manual guidance needed except for getting even better in frame shots, but even that could be addressed with the right hardware and software e.g. a gyro-stabilized gimbal system makes sure the camera is constantly focused on a specific target regardless of the speed, motions, pitch angle etc of the drone... Using some image recognition software it could even get perfectly framed shots...
