new DDR2 memory not working

So I bought some ram to put in a rather old laptop that I gave to a friend of mine. The laptop came with a gig of ram which you can find the details for here http://support.toshiba.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=1340417&isFromTOCLink=false
which states the laptop comes with
256MB(min)/2048MB (max), 2 memory slots using 256MB, 512MB,
1024MB or 2048MBPC4200 DDR2 533MHz SDRAM, dual-
channel support requires two memory
modules of same capacity
and clockspeed

The new ram I bought can be found here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004LT8LPC/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When I plug in the ram the computer and fire it up it goes into a reboot cycle which is the same thing it does without ram. I should also mention that I have tried to put one stick in a slot while starting the computer and have confirmed neither works.

To me there can only be 2 things wrong.
1. Both sticks of ram are faulty
2. I bought ram that isn't compatible with my laptop's motherboard
and the latter seems more likely but I would like your opinion as to what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks

Next time stick to named brands you get what you pay for Toshiba uses Samsung ram in most of their laptops there was a corsair set priced close to the set you got.

heard Toshiba is famous for these types of incompatibilities, find it funny in this regard if you are the lines
While at first glance, it may be in your best interest to shop around. Know that when you purchase RAM from Komputerbay, you're getting Grade-A brand name computer memory. Cheap computer memory, while possibly being compatible, can cause system crashes, error codes in your computer, and even damage to your motherboard! Other sellers may offer you similar looking products for a few cents or a dollar less, but here's the scoop on why: they sell cheap-grade memory and they don't test the modules before shipping! This ends up costing you time and money. Trust when you buy from Komputerbay, you are getting top of the line product from a top of the line company.
We test every module before it leaves the building, and back all of our purchases up with a LIFETIME WARRANTY!

1.8v is standard voltage for ddr2 memory. maybe the memory is using timings that need to be adjusted through BIOS if you can for it to function which can be the case, maybe just need to reset CMOS or something as it sounds like either it is truly incompatible or it is using the timings/voltage for other memory and not the new installed one, take the information from the memory that was in there and run the SKU# so you can see the timings/voltages and such that it had.

I do not see anywhere that it says anything about single sided or dual sided memory, some motherboards this was an issue.

So I reset the CMOS when I upgraded the bios and there is no way to change the timings within the bios. The computer still won't boot with the new ram. So basically I'm boned. Do you work for Komputerbay? Can you get me a refund?

No I do not, try contacting seller or something, hope you luck out, and if you REALLY want to make sure ram works, look deeply into it, as Toshiba as I stated is very specific with what works or does not for their different models, and I do know the generic memory like this komputerbay makes memory specifically made/tested for various models of dell, Toshiba, Vaio and so forth laptops.
