a shitty ad infested windows marketplace version if they ever do

don't be thinking it will be anything like what you are used to. They will still want to make money from you, and they will do it by locking down the OS and controlling what you can install

Just go buy a key off someone at /r/softwareswap or something if you're feeling cheap

edit: which is certainly against the TOS, so keep that in mind, for what it's worth.

windows 8? probably not... I'm sure they are messing with a viable business model.

The OP is probably just a post to get to the 50 post count needed for FS/FT, seeing that it's in the wrong forum and all.

MS would have to pay me to use Windows 8. I'll wait for the version that removes the phablet ui.

will they make win8 free?

No, but they should. In order to avoid the people referring it to Vista 2.0 for the last 2 years being proved accurate 1 1/2 years from now with similar market share, they need to do everything possible.

There could be an advantage of having a free or very cheap consumer version if it served as a platform for selling their other software and services. They could even partner with software companies to sell Windows only exclusives.

Nah he just enjoys posting weird biased posts that generate way too much traffic. He rarely actually contributes to said threads again.

Even though I'm not fond of platform exclusives, I'm glad to see that this is a thing that's actually phrased >that< way. It used to just be a given that if you made software for a personal computer it would be a windows only exclusive (because what alternative would you target if you actually wanted a cost effective return on your effort.) Competition is finally starting to happen, even if a large part of it is being enabled by Microsoft making a chain of bad decisions.

Competition on the desktop is really in no better position than it has been for decades. The negative PR around 8 makes it seem that way, and of course things like SteamOS the SteamBox are providing platforms for choices other than desktop Windows. But desktop Windows has had a couple of decades of complete dominance, the world is moving away solely from the desktop and it takes but a single Windows release to not only cause dissatisfaction but right most of the wrongs, think of Vista to 7. We're on the cusp of Windows 9 which is pretty much guaranteed to address the major issues of 8 on the desktop and extended the capabilities of Windows on tablets. And probably as usual, the competition will underestimate Microsoft's prowess when it comes to Windows, 9 will be an extremely good OS and we're right back in the same desktop cycle we've been a long time.

That's what he always does in the OS subforum. One line post to try and spark a flame war, then sit back and watch the battle. He's been doing this consistently for the past few months, all about Windows 8, I don't know why he hasn't been banned from creating threads here yet.

I think a lot of us like a good, if not beaten to death, Windows 8 debate. A lot of folks claimed to have gone on with Windows 8.x using the default UI with no problems once they got used to the UI and some claim to have nothing but problems, even to the extent where it's obvious that they don't use 8 much or never bothered to spend some time learning about it.

At any rate, we better enjoy it, or not, while we can. Windows 9 is on the way and the arguments used against 8 will probably not apply. There's a natural tendency by many tech guys to rail against Windows, like any popular technology. It's easy to pound on 8. 7 on the other had is much harder to call a POS while still being taking seriously. No doubt there will be those that rail against 9 assuming that the modern UI and apps are still there but it will much harder to do so with windowed modern apps and something equivalent to the Start Menu.

Microsoft could send me a free version of Windows 8 packed with a ham sandwich and I still wouldn't use it.

Wasn't Microsoft planning an ad-supported Windows 8 that was mentioned in the [H] news forum a month or two ago?

If so, can wait for that, but something tells me it'll be for OEMs only when they make Win 8.1 tablets and ultrabooks. Like I said in [H] news when it was last posted, Windows is priced too high especially when compared to the bulk and volume pricing OEMs benefit from. In my opinion, Windows needs to be priced below $100 for upgrade, OEM, and retail copies. If they're trying to sell more Win 8.1 tablets, I can understand them for lowering the price on Win 8.1 for OEMs. However, for consumers, like you and I, they really should lower it. A good chunk of the price of hand-built computers that use Windows operating systems goes for the OS when you consider that they cost between $99 to $180, and that's without student discount.

I'd really like to see Windows operating system drop below $100 and stay there. It'd make building your computer and budgeting it out less of a headache without having to resort to waiting for a sale on computer parts or rebates and discounts, or swapping out parts for lower performing parts just to fit a Windows OS into the budget.

Out of curiosity I just had to look...and you weren't kidding. When it's not flame bait, it's a rather lame question:

Are you using windows 8.1?

for what purpose does "cloud" exist?

have you guys seen this? (win8.2)

what will they call it?
Windows 8.2 or windows 9? I hope they call the next version, windows 9! Windows 8.2 is just too confusing to me.

when is win8.1 out?

what do people from other coutries think of windows 8?

Post here if you are from another country besides the us
If you are from another country please post comments here. How do you like windows 8? Do you like what Microsoft done with windows 8?

We'll find out on April 4th or 5th what the new version of Windows will be called. I cannot imagine in any reality that they call it Windows 8.2. After the complete dismissal of the entire team and leadership responsible for 8, I'm pretty sure they want to distance them self from 8 as quickly as possible. The core OS team has had almost two years now to fix 8 and offer us a better product. I'm quite excited to see the new minimalist start menu and hopefully some functionality that allows modern apps to run in Windowed mode. I will be upgrading to 9 as soon as it launches.
