Titanfall - Respawn Entertainment's first game

I've been loving Titanfall. I didn't think I would like it because my interest has faded over the years. But I haven't had this much fun playing a shooter since Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament.

So far the maps are relatively small to the 6v6 really doesn't feel that bad.

This is coming from some one that plays Call of duty for the single player campaign.

Welp this comment right here makes me want to stay away even more.

i HATE MW and CoD and i like this
play is MUCH faster but slower then say Tribes and hardpoint and CTF feel a lot like Tribes

it only feels like CoD if your noob it up and dont make use of the vertical game

I tried it on friends PC, I haven't played CoD since Black Ops (1), its got a few fun elements to it, worth buying? Not for $60. But YMMV.

The one thing I noticed I was seeing every match is the grunts frozen in animation until you triggered them. I think it usually happened in Attrition, but it could have been in hardpoint also.

I kept entering buildings only to see two grunts from opposing sides frozen until I walked past an invisible line to trigger them. Then one would eventually win once I got close enough otherwise they would just stay frozen in place.

Bought this on a whim...and I'd say it actually reminds me a lot of BRINK, but obviously better. It has the same sort of parkour movement, lack of single player options, and random pseudo plot.
I'm not sure it's going to keep my attention for long, but it's a mindless distraction.
After playing the demo I figured there would be some sort of plot or SP mode...but it's literally just more of the same.

that screen tearing man.. ugh. i tried enabling adaptive vsync in nvidia control panel and it eliminates the tearing for the most part but then i get some weird studders as if my framerate is tanking. shouldn't happen with a gtx780
I have a GTX 780 hooked up to a 144 Hz monitor. I enable Adaptive Vsync in the control panel and double buffered Vsync in-game. Game is running 100+ FPS with AA turned off, Insane textures, everything else on high... with no screen tearing. If I turn up to 4x MSAA framerate will drop to 60-80 FPS on most maps. If I run with 8x CSAA as GeForce Experience recommends it will tank into the 30's , at which point the tearing and studder rears its ugly head.

For tearing/stuttering - there's a pretty easy fix for some setups.
Run the game in a window (with the internal vsync on).
Under the game properties section of Origin add "-noborder" to the command line. That will make the game run in a borderless full-screen window. Some folks also add "-novid" as that fixes some issues with maximum fps, but I haven't needed it.

I think it's a super fun game, and I've had no technical issues at all so far, other than the stupid 60fps cap with vsync off. Network/matchmaking has been flawless.

My only real beef with the game lies in the content. There's next to nothing to unlock as far as weapon attachments, customizations, skins, etc. Previous CoD games and the BF series has Titanfall LICKED as far as that stuff goes.

Again, super fun game, but glad I didn't pay $60 for it.

Awww, you mad I don't like your precious game you overpaid for? Baaahahahaa

What are you talking about? I was just suggesting another shooter for you to try. I thought you were looking for something more tactical and cerebral. Not mad at all. How did I overpay for Titanfall? I'm having so much fun I already reset my character to level it again. :)

Maybe this is more your speed?

This weeks PC Gamer podcast was pretty down on the game, but agreed with most of those who didn't like the game.

it also screams console port, so you might wanna pass on this one

how so? SO far I find it works great on the pc, my only real gripe is the loss of hud in eyefinity. The matchmaking system, works great for me. Its quick and I haven't lagged in a single game yet, the game itself runs fantastically on my older 6950 and looks fairly nice. A lot of people gripe about the 6v6 but I think they designed the maps pretty well for it, always seems to be plenty of action going on but not so much you die instantly, Ive spent a lot more time running around not shooting at anything in battlefield games with way more players

Like the game or not I wouldn't write it off as a console port, ive been having nothing but fun with it since it launched with my only technical issue being I couldn't play the night it launched as servers wouldn't connect me but that's always an expected thing nowadays

What have you been playing that Titanfall seems fast paced? LMAO.

If you play Titanfall like call of duty or counterstrike it is a slow paced experience ...if you learn the routes and movement and chain together wall jumps and skim jumping it can be fast paced. If you're playing slow you're doing it wrong, there's plenty of potential to play at a fast pace and it's advantageous to do so.

Works great for me, as well. The control fidelity and library of customizable options says to me that the PC version at least had extra development time, if not being the base with the XBONE version actually being a PC port (which I think we'll see more of going forward this console generation). I think the Vsync issue and framerate cap was more a problem of code bases getting mixed up, but other than that the PC version actually "screams" PC game to me. Now if we're talking "consolized" gameplay, that is a totally different discussion I won't get pulled into...

I just want to know what shooter out there I've missed that is so awesome that all of these pessimists that bash all of the shooters that are currently available are playing instead. Surely I've missed a game somewhere, because it surely isn't Titanfall, BF4, or CoD according to some of these people.

I feel the same, and this is coming from someone who despises any COD game. This is breath of fresh air IMO.

is anyone playing on surround or eyefinitiy?
can you tell me if the hud is still broken or is it optimized for surround?
beta ran like shit for me.

I think it could have been a great FPS title if they didn't implanted so much stupid features.
The Smartgun, the possibility to have legit Map hack/wall hack and so on.

Getting killed by a guy with a smartgun that saw you threw the walls is really boring, and it frequently happens.

Also, I'm quite used to FPS games with my friends, and when we team up to play together, there aren't enough tickets or opponents to really enjoy the game.

I hope we get private lobby to customize the parameters ...

Hawken.

I played Titanfall for 6 hours yesterday on XBONE and then proceeded to get on my PC and play some Hawken. If you want to play a game with mechs and have a PC try out Hawken, its free to play. It is very well done and runs flawlessly. Not only that but the new maps with lush jungle are beautiful.

I'm surprised it's flying under the radar actually, though it might be due to the high level of competitiveness. It reminds me of CS in a sense but with much more depth (items, upgrades, customization, shields.)

I run in portrait surround and it looks just fine to me.

I'm running eyefinitiy at 5760x1200 with no problems, so far.

Titanfall isn't really a mech game, it's different.

Hawken got screwed by MWO. Hawken doesn't really play like a mech game, neither does Titanfall honestly. MWO pulled all the "I want to shoot mechs" people into it before it gradually imploded due to developer/publisher stupidity and idiocy.

I disagree, I,don't find the smart gun all that great. I can kill much quicker with the starter assault rifle. Only thing smart gun is,good,at is killing grunts

I received the game as a birthday gift. So far, I'm having a lot of fun with it. I love the map designs even though they seem small. It's a fast run-and-gun game that I can pick up and play without investing a lot of time.

A couple of gripes:
I'm only level 17, but it seems the only weapon I use is the starter rifle with some mods.
Same with the Titans. I use 1 custom loadout for 98% of the games I play.
I want to use the sniper rifle, but with the size of the maps, I never find any use for it.

The second thing is the player cap. Face it, the AI Grunts aren't even an obstacle.

Titan fights is just a slugfest. I have more fun avoiding Titans as a pilot than actually piloting a titan.

How's the "acrobatics" aspect of the game playing out? I watched a couple video reviews and it seemed like it isn't being made use of to the extent the devs probably wished.

The game has some weapon balance issues. Not that some guns are vastly over powered or vastly under powered, but that some options are slightly better and easier to use.

For your main gun, the shotgun, smg, and starting rifle are just all around better than the other options. Stuff like the sniper rifle for the special forces rifle are really situational weapons that depend entirely on the map and game type to be viable.... and even then just take more effort that the prior three options.

You'll notice the same with grenades, satchel charges are just outright better than everything else. For the anti titan weapons the arc grenades (or whatever it's called) is also better at the job.

Not saying you can't use anything else, it's just that outside of "oh it's CTF and it's this particular map" type situations there's no reason to and even then it takes more effort.

Titan weapons are nearly as bad. The 40mm cannon has higher DPS than anything out there and is stupidly easy to use against Titans and pilots. All the other weapons have lower DPS and significant draw backs in using them. While stuff like the Plasma Railgun or Tripple threat can be effective once souped up, they still aren't as good as the standard 40mm cannon outside of specific situations.

The only real variety out there is in burn cards, and tactical/Titan abilities. But even then some combinations are just outright better than others.

As for the grunts, they aren't supposed to be a challenge. They're there for you to farm up to get Titans and XP, nothing more.

Hawken plays like an FPS in giant mechs where MWO is more of a 'Sim' (a shitty one IMO).

This is why Hawken reminds me of counter strike. It's all about fast-paced twitch shooting and team tactics... which is exactly why I love it. Play is not as linear as CS though which makes it more fun.

definitely useful in Hard Point

speed helps with getting to hard points faster. wall hanging helps with allowing more creative positions when guarding a hard point. opens up more ways to attack a hard point than just plain running there.

assume it's also useful in CTF but I haven't played that

don't think the parkour is as useful in Attrition / Pilots Only mode once Titans start falling

The rail gun on the titan is amazing,if you get good at avoidance. I can kill lots of titans but charging, jumping out,and shooting then going back again. So many players just stand and shoot, trick is to always be weaving around so they can't hit you then hitting them with a charged rail blast. may be cheap but it kills well and I take little damage. So far my top is 5 titan kills with 1 titan

For someone who is just starting out - what are some things I should know?
I understand the mechanics of "kill everything" - but what else is there to it? Sometimes I kill 3-4 people in a row (bots I assume) and it doesn't seem to even count at all. For that matter, sometimes my Titan kills don't either.
What's the best way to learn the game other than just continuing to play and handicapping the game for people that DO seem to know what they're doing ? :D

It's still less damage than the 40mm cannon. The 40mm cannon kills Titans and Pilots better, faster, and easier than the railgun. And that's even against the railgun that does not require charge time.

I think the railgun is fun, but it does less damage, takes longer to kill Titans and Pilots, and takes more effort. Outside of very specific situations, it's flat out inferior in every way.

Well I'm,gonna have to try,it out again tonight. I've gotten to use to railgun I haven't tested 40mm in a while

I normally advocate to use whats fun for you. I prefer the arc cannon because it's fun and I have fun. But the 40mm is just the better all around. The triple threat is good for spamming on maps with control points, but again specific situation.

I'm not saying it's OP vs under P. Just more "these things are better in almost every situation, these other weapons are very situational".

I find that the really good players use it a lot, especially in Hard Point, but also in fire fights to confuse and get the drop on people.
