Dark Souls is on Steam

Did they ever say they were converting this to Steamworks or do you guys think they're depending on people completely abandoning this for DS2 so that they don't have to convert this?

Yay.

created a new Dex character and am having fun invading at lower levels with my Great Scythe +15...yesterday I received 900,000+ souls after a win...new record for me

I hope you're not level 3...

lol

What is the number souls you get for invading based off of? My best return was about 800,000. After I got killed trying to invade, I ended up invading the same guy and exacted my revenge. He was pretty good and my guess was that he had a really high kill streak or something.

I think they have to convert since GFWL will simply cease to function, and it would be silly not to since this thing is still selling, and will continue to sell even after DS2. And based on everything ive read about DS2 and the things they've flat out made worse or gotten wrong, I get the sense that DS1 will live on as the classic and definitive Dark Souls experience and title. So they'd be sacrificing a profit center by leaving it to die on GFWL.

Ive got my Steam copy just sitting there waiting to be patched, never played it and not going to install GFWL under any circumstances. Happily played DS1 on 360 until now. Hopefully the conversion to Steamworks won't kill mods and the nice things DSFix brought.

Based on rumors ive read at neogaf claiming "namco employees" as sources, there could be an announcement next week.

I wouldn't be surprised if they held back the PC release just to push console sales. Either way I'm still gonna wait for the PC release.

Ding ding ding this is exactly why they delayed the PC version. Same as Rockstar.

And based on everything ive read about DS2 and the things they've flat out made worse or gotten wrong...

I've been steering clear of any Dark Souls 2 spoilers etc...I haven't even read any reviews of the game yet...but all scores seem to indicate the game is better then or on par with DS1...what have you heard is worse?

Maybe "worse" was the wrong word, but different. And in fairness I myself haven't played it, only read about it. You're right that reviews are glowing across the board. I do read a lot about the "dwindling health bar" where your max health keeps degenerating every time you die - that's a fairly common grumble.

One review will say for example "Dark Souls 2 is really more like Demon Souls and Dark Souls had a baby, than a straight successor to Dark Souls". Another review took the glass half full approach with "Everything you love about Demon Souls and Dark Souls are in Dark Souls 2".

So I suppose its all a matter of perspective and ultimately comes down to individual expectations. And gripes are subjective. Anyway I'll leave it at that, if you've steered clear of reviews and spoilers, no reason to ruin that now.

The dwindling health bar is not as big issue as you think it is. I've said it before, but it was much more punishing in Demon's Souls. Human Effigies are pretty common and early in the game you'll find a ring that hard-caps the maximum amount you lose to 25% rather than 50%.

I'm almost done with the game, and for all intents and purposes it's just as good as Dark Souls (and Demon's Souls for that matter). There are some things it does better, some things that it does worse, but overall it isn't in any way disappointing.

So unless you're super fussy about certain gameplay mechanics (which I imagine those that put in 500+ hours into Dark Souls might be), then you'll be more than content with DS2.

Anyone having trouble finding signs last night/today?
I played yesterday morning, signs everywhere, I'm getting summoned left and right, somewhere around afternoon it all just stops. Nothing for the rest of the night. Steam said there was 7k playing at the time, SL27 waiting for the gargolyes and the depths bonfire, and you know its always easy there...

There was a GFWL update yesterday, but that was way before any of this started happening... :-/

I played a lot yesterday with my buddy, we didn't have any trouble with seeing each others signs. Saw lots of others too. I did notice that sometimes the online shit bugs out and my white soapstone was constantly grayed out. Had to quit and reload my character then it was fine.

Just for shits and giggles I tried to kill the red drake on the bridge a few times. Nothin but chain fire attacks. Once I did get him to stop breathing fire and try to melee me, but that didn't last long. I doubt there is enough fire resist to take his damage, what are you supposed to do?

I have a PS3 and PC. I want to get the PC version, but I want to use one of my DS3/PS3 controllers not keyboard+mouse. Will that work/is it as good as PS3 control from someone who has played it/both ways?

You come up to the top of the stairs, but not onto the bridge proper and wait a bit (i forget how long, 10-20 sec) which baits him to fly down to the bridge. It's prob best to just judge where he lands and run back down the stairs a few times to get a feel for the timings and placement. Once you are comfortable with where he will land, run out onto the bridge proper to where his head will be (it will be there by the time you run out) and two hand your best weapon hitting him once and retreat down the stairs and wait for him to fly back up. Then repeat until he's dead. I've seen some people that can bait him into walking around and then melee his feet, but I've never been able to do this consistently.

There are also a bunch of videos on youtube showing how to do it.

I've beat both PS3 and PC versions and the PS3 controller works just as well on the PC version, though getting it to work wirelessly can sometimes be problematic.. I've used M/KB but greatly prefer using the controller.

Ironically I did this with another build yesterday.
I'm really not sure if you have to be a certain level, or at a certain point in the game, to get him to actually fly on-to the bridge so you can fight him, but I spent a good 20 minutes hiding behind the wall at the top of the bridge, making him shoot his fire over and over again, but he just would not fly on-to the bridge to fight me.

I remember doing this with another build that was at the end of the game(only final boss left), and it only took like 3 tries before he jumped on the bridge and we could fight.

Anyway, this time, with my faith build, I got past him by just running balls to the wall at him, taking the first flame right in the face and getting up and running past him before he could blow fire again. It did take around 3-4 tries though, so be prepared to die once or twice. That was with the stock cleric set, btw. SL 20 or so at that point. (BTW, do not roll INTO the flame. It will insta kill you )

Cool thx, yeah I just hate clicking M1 1,000's of times a day it's arthritic imho.

you will need an unoficial driver and/or an XID/Xinput wrapper. DS3 don't have official windows drivers and Dark Souls doesn't natively recognize the DS3. You have to trick it into thinking you are using a 360 controller.

I've taken him out on ng+ and ng++ and what I did was to arrow him from the rat entrance until he's about half health. If u go pass that he will regenerate. Then go to the stairway up to the top and get him to fly over. As he flew over, I unleashed as many crystal soul arrows as I could into him. At some point he knocks you over. Go down and heal, then go back up to finish the job.

Helps that I had both the crown and ring that boosts mail damage 20% each. Also used logans staff and had fifty int. I suppose u can use the tin crystallization staff if u have enough attunement slots.

A better way to fight the Hellkite dragon is to first bait him to come down by standing in front of the stairs that lead back to the Parish bonfire. If you're quick enough you'll get into cover just before the fire reaches you. It'll take about a minute standing there. The second you see his animation signaling that he's coming down, run toward the bonfire underneath his perch. Before going through the gate, though, turn right onto the outcropping of the bridge. If you stand here the fire cannot reach you, and he goes into a pattern that allows you to melee. There are videos on Youtube that illustrate this approach, and in my opinion it is far faster and more enjoyable than the constant baiting by the stairs. A lot of people believe that this is the way the developers intended players to fight the Hellkite dragon.

Anyone having trouble finding signs last night/today?

There was a GFWL update yesterday, but that was way before any of this started happening...

I almost never pvp using soapstone signs...I always use the Red Eye Orb for invasions...very easy to invade with almost no wait 98% of the time...I wouldn't like waiting around for someone to summon me or to be invaded

I was also wondering what that GFWL update patched...I was hoping it was something to do with DS transitioning over to Steamworks

Me and you both, man. Sadly, we are still on GFWL :(

It just seemed out of the ordinary. It makes me wonder if your summon sign is actually seen when you have defeated the area boss in YOUR game...... That was the only common thing I can point out during the day. I progressed through the game, summoned players for Quelaag, did not level up, placed my sign at the bonfire in the swamp. Nothing for like 15 minutes, when the night before was just about instant.

I have a few saves from previous boss battles, I'm going to use those to test later. If it's a SL thing or something else.........

I'm not trying to invade with this build. It's my 50-FAI build and I'm a Sunbro. I want to be summoned!

It's a combination of a SL calculation and how large your IP pool is. I'm not sure if this is still accurate, but it helped a friend and I dial in our summons: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2959611

To maximize your summon chances, you'll want to ensure you're in an area that you're appropriately leveled for. E.g. you shouldn't be SL60 in the the Undead Parish hoping to get summoned for PvE, but it's a legitimate spot for a wide range of PvP.

But if you have a friend you're trying to coop with, you'll want to allow your IP pools to build up. There are now work-arounds available that make this easier, but "back in the day" this used to take quite a bit of time. Basically when we started off a session of DS, we'd go straight to the Blighttown shortcut and just chill out at the top of the laddered scaffolding. One would lay down a summon sign, then the two of us just hang out. This allowed us time to be added to each other's IP pools while remaining relatively safe from invasions. Invasions were actually a good thing, because it meant our IP pool was building. It usually took anywhere between 5-30 minutes before we'd see each other's summon signs, but once we did, it was guaranteed summoning from that point on.

It seems all the sites tell you to put your summon sign down and just wait, but my buddy and I actually had more luck removing and replacing them. We'd wait for like 5 minutes and nothing would appear. Then he'd cancel it and the second he laid it down again it'd show up.

Were both running dscfix.

Yeah I know the avg SL for each area, like I said, it was working just fine, it just...stopped. It's like it rebuild the pool all over again if you beat a boss in your game, not leveling up afterwards, and laying down your sign in the same area. I did that in the Depths. Was SL~27, got quickly summoned to another game, beat Gaping Drag, go back; quickly summoned players to my game, beat Gap Drag, go back, lay down sign.... Not a thing for 15 minutes...... I was getting summoned left and right with another build, SL107 at the Kiln a few days ago... But this is a new build, Sunbro...

I'm just pubbing, not teaming up with anyone in particular.

I created a new DEX character last week and have been having fun invading at lower levels...I capped myself at Level 50 (Vit= 28 End= 26 Dex= 25) and am having more fun then invading at souls levels above 90...I beat all the bosses pretty easily except for Manus who is crazy hard at this level...even with my Great Scythe +15 he is hard as hell...I can handle his melee moves but once he busts out the magic I'm done...he unleashes those magic moves way too quick with hardly any time to react (and yes I have the pendent)

I can beat him with my normal builds but at low levels he is brutal

Is all your armor +15 too?

No wonder i get raped in pvp. Does anyone pvp without twinking? I haven't upgraded any of my armor and my weapon is only at +10. SL 45

Technically one could play through the entire game as an SL1 to get all the equipment and required materials, then go back to any "low-level" area to PVP. Can't really twink in this game in the traditional sense without save or memory hacking.

And armour only goes to +10. You can upgrade your armour all the way to +10 if you have the materials. No blacksmith upgrades necessary.

I've definitely been owned by a low level twink before. I was SL 3 at the time. The dude had to have maxed out weapons and armor because when I did land a hit it barely hurt him, then he proceeded to kill me with one strike.

I haven't upgraded any armor yet because then I won't be able to tell the difference between items. If I had a helm +1, I'd have to compare it to another helm +1 to really see how they differ.

I appreciate the purity of your play style. But the full stats an all armors are in the wikis. So you don't have to waste a lot of time and pain by limiting your playing just so you can see some number variances. I mean, if you are that worried about min-maxing, you may as well peek at the stat sheets. Otherwise, Dark Souls is a pretty open experience and you can make effective use of just about any gear. In other words, don't worry about it so much and just have fun with the game!

You'd be surprised how weak you are at SL3.
Eitherway, it depends on what happened in your game. At SL3, If you have sin, someone as high as SL66 can invade you. Forest Hunters can be up to SL14, but Red Eye users will only be SL3.

Then of course, there is the always possible hacker... which I think are rare. After 330+ hrs I've yet to come across one...

Oh, really?? I'll bet i was fighting a really high level dude then. I was bored on this low character waiting for my buddy to beat the tutorial so i killed some NPC's. That would explain WTF that was all about lol

Now i can stop QQing about twinks

I upgrade/max out all my main weapons and my 2 main shields (Silver Knight Shield +5 and Crest Shield +5 for magic resistance)...I like fast movement so I prefer not to wear armor...depending on the pvp opponent I sometimes wear parts of Smough's Armor (which can't be upgraded)...I also wear Mask of the Child/Father for more Health/Endurance...and also Cloranthy Ring + another one depending

the better way is probably to finish the game once with max weapons/armor/kindle all bonfires etc and then start NG+ at very low soul levels for invasion...getting through an entire game at soul level 1 would be a grind without the right gear and even then the limited health/endurance would be brutal against certain opponents (Manus!)

I'm an advocate of choosing armour that you like the looks of on your character in this game. When it comes down to it, mobility is a better defensive attribute than defense. Generally if you're being hit by bosses, you're either going to die or waste time by leaving yourself open to attack when you have to stop and heal. The same general principle can be applied to PvP as well.

I think that is one of the beauties of this game. You really don't have to be a numbers-cruncher to get the most out of it. Just get your stats to the level where you can use your chosen equipment and then aim toward the known growth ceilings to maximize your effectiveness.

  • Dex to 45 for max casting speed if using Miracles/Sorceries/Pyromancy
  • End to 40 for max stamina
  • Fth/Int high enough to use chosen Miracles/Sorceries
  • Vit to 50 for peak HP based on growth curve
  • Then increase the above to your needs to make a quality build (Str/Dex for weapon/dark Sorcery/dark Pyromancy damage, Fth/Int for Miracle/Sorcery damage, End for carrying capacity, Vit for more HP)

I took your advice and went ahead and upgraded my armor as much as i could. I mean, I've been wearing these pieces for awhile now, so why not? Titanite should be pretty easy to come by. I now have a +4 Boar's Helm, and +2 Elite Knight's set for the rest. I definitely notice me taking less damage. Also, last night I finally got all the way to the end of the catacombs (i think). I reached the Fog gate at the bottom of the ravine with those rolly-polly skeletons. Unfortunately I used all my flasks and spells on killing the Lightening Demon guarding the Eyes of Death (what are these for exactly? What does luring phantoms mean?) and then the pyromancer group and knight before the rolling skeletons. With only one flask left I was too afraid of going through that fog gate

They are covenant items for the Gravelord Covenant. In NG+ and above, using one of these items in an area where the boss has not yet been defeated in your world will cause a lot of powerful black phantom versions of enemies to appear in another person's world. To rid their world of the "curses" the other person has to search for your black summon sign located where you used the Eye of Death, and either defeat you in battle or die.
There is a NPC that you can summon for help. To reach his sign you have to make a drop of faith from the area before the lurking Titanite Demon above.
In all truth, the Catacombs Boss isn't all that hard ;).

you may have noticed a broken casket in front of the titanite demon. you may want to try going into it. And waiting for a while. afterwards there is someone.... you can pray to. you need to have eyes of death to have the option

also... there is a hidden bonfire near the bottom of catacombs. you may want to find it before exploring more. :)

Is this the one behind the illusory wall? I actually found this one on my own!

if you want a solid all around armor in terms of protection/mobility look for the Black Iron set
