Offline Scanning on SAS drives

I have a Seagate Constellation ES.2 drive I'm using in my desktop for mass storage. There's a feature with the enterprise class drives that auto scans the hard drives for problems when the drive is idle. Since the drive is idle most of the time, the constant hard drive seeking noise is driving me nuts. I tried googling an answer and I got this cryptic forum post.

Can any one shed more light on how to turn this off?

What OS are you using? You can usually adjust the parameters of the drive with an applicable utility.

Windows 7. I'm using the SAS ports on my Asus P6T Deluxe motherboard if that helps. The Seagate Tools software works with the drive OK but doesn't appear to have the ability to change parameters. Probably because turning off offline scanning would void the warranty but I don't care about that.

I was hoping for an easy utility that could modify parameters of the drive but after further research, I think it's more involved than that. It looks like I need a 232 to TTL adapter and connect it up to the extra pins next to the data cable on the drive. Seems doable if I get the adapter but I'm not sure I want to risk bricking my drive. If anyone has a solution that doesn't need the adapter, I'm all ears.
