Razer Develops Own Mechanical Switch (Guru3d)

These are Kailh switches; Chinese clones of Cherry MXs. They do not have a very good reputation due to a high breakage and fail rate. I find it somewhat humorous that we have here an association of iOne, Razer and Kailh — three brands which are regarded as being the worst offenders in the QC department.

Their marketing sure does try to convince the reader that these are indeed a superior switch developed by the brilliant minds of Razer. Interesting that they make a point to mention QC procedures. I agree though, all my previous Razer gear has been very poorly made.

I'm almost tempted to try them out though, just to give them a fair shake. The initial batches are usually the worst made, so they scream for a review!

So this means that the switches with start to "double-click" after about 6 months, right?

Probably 3 months...

so... razer doesn't want to pay for actual cherry switches so get Chinese clones with razer branding..

yay?

So much fail, Razer.

And how I used to love your mice (still like my Naga)

Don't get me wrong, I think Razer makes some very nice looking and comfortable gear, but I can't bring myself to buy another Razer mouse after the last two started double-clicking less than a year after buying them brand new.

And that's the problem, no matter how comfortable and great looking their products are, they still suck. I've been eying the Orbweaver gamepad, but can't bring myself to pull the trigger because of the QC issues of late. Although it does use Cherry MX switches though.

Well, I have been using the Blackwidow non backlight keyboard with blue switches since it came out about two or so years ago. Still works, knock on wood! I don't know about these switches though.

I'm waiting for all the rage complaints from the first gen. production of boards with these "new" switches :D

i was going to buy a blackwidow but it turned out to be the green backlight version and then i read how terrible the qc was ordered a rosewill.

Early damage control.

I laughed much harder than I should have. Oh Razer, you so silly.

wow... to hear that they are just using a chinese knock off after watching that video that so clearly states that they "rallied their engineers" to create a new switch specifically for them. interesting.

sounds like Razer, buy knockoff parts for a quarter of the price, then jack up the marketing like it's better than the original parts, all while jacking up the price and profits /puke

So in other words...they're acting like every single other company out there.

Most companies offering clones/cheaper knockoffs would sell said products at lower prices than the original. Razer is either keeping prices the same or jacking it up in all likelihood.

No...most companies would charge whatever they think they could get away with plus a bit more.

RAM, HDDs, Pink Slime as it is known, fake fashion accessories and clothes....anything.

I had the original Blackwidow Ultimate for 2 years without issue and just recently go the 2013 green backlight version in December and I haven't had any problems so far. I'm also on my 3rd Deathadder although this time I got the 2013 version as well.

I think Razer is a little overpriced but I've had pretty good luck with their products.

Well yes and no...

Most companies don't blatantly lie about 'creating something' that they bought overseas as a knockoff of a well known item.
Usually they admit to using cheaper parts and use that as a hook to get customers who don't give a shit about quality, and just want CHEAP.
BUT when you lie about using quality, and charge out the ass like it is quality, and you still end up using cheap s#it then the customers have a right to be mad.

It's like tryign to sell a Datson for 100k when you can get a porsche instead, sure they kinda look alike, but the cheap ass datson will break down because it's cheap ass parts.
The thing is that they didn't do that, and they kept the price down relative to the cost of the parts.

My problem with Razer here is the misinformation and potential lies they are spreading through their marketing. I find their promotional material insulting to anyone with adequate cognitive abilities.

Also, generally speaking the implementation of Kailh switches are a problem. While I am all for competition, the similarities with Cherry switches are far too many (even the color coding is the same) and will cause a lot of confusion for the neophytes. Razer changing Kailh Blues to Razer Greens is no help, even though I understand green is Razer's trademark.

And for those who do not know, Noppoo are also developing a Cherry MX clone switch:

This is going to be fun...

I think Noppoo is turning to Kailh as well, someone on Geekhack posted a picture of all the companies that Kailh is working with currently and I'm pretty sure Noppoo was in there along with Razer and a nice number of other large peripheral companies.

List of known boards using Kailh switches.

More info about "Razor's new switches".

This wouldn't be as big of an issue as it is if Kailh's clones weren't such poor quality compared to real Cherry Corp.'s switches.

I am in contact with someone who is involved in development for Noppoo and Vortex (he usually takes care of ISO adaptations) and also distributes for them in Europe. He has confirmed with me the Noppoo switches are not Kailhs.

Call them out on it on social media. Helping Chinese companies skirt patents with cheap knockoffs. Bullshit.

I can't be the only person that thought "Not poo" when I saw Noppoo.

One thing I cannot get my head around is that Razer, according to the price listed on their eStore, are asking for €140 for the Blackwidow 2014. For €10 more one can buy a Filco or a Ducky.

Now, while I acknowledge it is the market that dictates the prices, I find it outrageous that they are selling an iOne x Kailh x Razer keyboard for nearly the same price as the top of the line Cherry MX SKUs. I am out of words as to how to describe how crazy this is...

I can't be the only person that thought "Not poo" when I saw Noppoo.
You are not. It is a popular pun/joke amongst the keyboard enthusiasts :D

This isn't a surprise really. They want to fatten their profit margins and keep selling keyboards to the uneducated masses because they look cool and say "gaming" on them. Quality has never been Razer's forte and that doesn't seem like it will ever change.

To be fair though, Razer needed a solution to be able to move the required quantities of keyboards to their costumers. Cherry Corp. is notorious for being unable to meet demands in terms of supply volume. My issue lies with Razer's execution.

If one good thing came out of this, it would be that Razer just freed up a large allocation of Cherry switches to the other Cherry partners.

I understand their need to move units, but their units are pretty horrible. As you said the problem lies with their execution. Their designs are cheap and plagued with problems that shouldn't exist on something as simple as a keyboard.

It's not really a surprise Razer made this move, but.... I highly doubt it will come close to Cherry switches, at least in regards to quality. Knowing Razer, chinese knockoffs sounds closer.

Their quality is fine and they've made some great products. The Deathadder especially has always been one of, if not the, best mouse for FPS since it was originally released. As for "gaming" you can throw that at logitech, microsoft, steelseries, madcatz (who are very much known for shitty quality), corsair, and just about everyone else in the market.

Outside of the oroborus (which isn't even as doofy looking as some of the madcatz or corsair products) most of their stuff isn't that blingy in the looks department. It's understated black with some green highlights. The visual style of their products has been reigned in a lot from the old diamondback days.

Mechanical keyboards are mechanical keyboards with everybody using switches from the same small pool of vendors. I got the black widow ultimate because I use a Deathadder and wanted to deal with the same driver suite rather than multiple. No complaints about it at all.
