Press Release

This finally puts the system ahead of the Wii U in LTD sales.

TOKYO, March 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that the PlayStation 4 (PS4™) computer entertainment system has cumulatively sold through more than 6.0 million units*1 globally as of March 2, 2014 (JST). This also includes the 370,000 units sold through in Japan since its launch on February 22.

PS4 software sales also remain strong with more than 13.7 million copies sold in retail stores worldwide and through digital downloads on PlayStation®Store as of March 2, 2014 (JST).

This is a pretty significant number in that amount of time, they are 1 million units ahead of their forcasted FY estimates. 370,000 in Japan makes it the 3'rd highest selling system over there in history. 70k more than my estimates originally, bundling Knack for free probably helped move some consoles. The launch lineup there was fairly poor, they are likely waiting on MGS and FF.

Killzone selling 2.1 million units was a surprise, I was not expecting it to be that high considering Ghosts and BF4.

I wish people would stop harassing other users already, Kyle needs to start banning people. I can't read anything in the console sub forum without seeing this kind of stuff in almost every thread.

Then I would suggest you stop going in and reading those types of console threads. The real problem is people are just too sensitive. This is a hardware enthusiast web site at it's very core. For the first time in console history, we have two new next generation consoles, the Xbox One along with the PS4 that are basically personal computers. No one can argue that. That is why you have a lot of interest and with it, many many different opinions and comments. Over time this will die down. Until then, just follow the rules and if you're a fan of one console or the other, try and not be too over-bearing.

With what MS stated at their launch event, what did you expect¿ less power, pay for everything, draconian DRM, etc...

Lol that was not harassment man, just fun and games. He called it right, he was posting it while I was reading the press release :p

Proving that Tablets are not what home console gamers want at the top of their list.

Fax that to Nintendo please.

When is Microsoft releasing their sales numbers?

Yawn. Jin trashing the Wii U again...

More and more this looks like a repeat of 6th generation consoles, where the PS2 completely dominated. Xbone weekly sales have fallen down almost to WiiU levels.

I sure hope it sold that many; I see advertisements non-stop for the thing. Their Marketing/Advertising costs have to be through the roof.

Unless Titanfall pushes the Xbone over 6 million they will probably only release a percentage figure or combine 360/one sales for one larger number.

I doubt they release PR statements anymore on sales figures.

Not really trashing the Wii U, we all knew this was going to happen prior to May at the latest. That was actually said months before the new consoles launched.

I love the *idea* of nintendo's tablet+controller. The price, the lacking graphics fidelity of the system itself, and nintendo's archaic online-ecosystem are what turn me off.

I will be buying a PS4 at some point. I am just waiting on the game library to mature a little bit before jumping in, as well as waiting to see if they include any technical upgrades in a next iteration of their console.

I didn't buy a PS3 until 2 years after it's launch and had a pretty good gaming library from the get go there.

Oh and btw, on topic, yes, 6 million is pretty impressive, I am definitely impressed by those numbers. It remains to be seen if it will outpace the PS2 or PS3 numbers over the long haul, but that's definitely a good start.

I'd be far more inclined to early adopt the PS4 if it was backwards compatible with the PS3. As is I am not considering buying one until I am thoroughly done with the PS3.

I've went back to mine to catch up on some PS+ titles, the last 3 months or so they have been releases a nice amount of stuff.

Another thing besides backwards compatibility that may have hooked me was having Dark Souls 2 developed for the PS4. Sony blew it there too. Personally, they are not giving me much reason to rush out and buy one. I'd love to upgrade my PS3, but they got to give me a good reason.

This is up to the Developer not Sony. They most likely didnt want to put in the man hours to port it to PS4/Xbone.

Also lots of great games are coming to the PS4 this year. Anyone who early adopts a console should expect this, i dont get why many are surprised

Yea but Sony could have leaned on them, after it's their console. Just saying I think it was a mistake bringing out DS2 on the PS3.

Dark Souls only sold 1.73 million copies on the ps3. That is not that much for an 82.54 million installed base. It's simply not popular enough of a game to Sony to invest money into getting the dev to do a port. If the PS4 had a similar attach rate it would only mean about 120k copies sold on the ps4. Not exactly an endorsement to put the effort in.

Why would it be a mistake? More people in the world own PS3s than they do PS4s at the moment. Follow the money and install base!

As far as the install base, yea there are a ton more PS3s out there, but maybe they could have sold some PS4s if Dark Souls 2 were a showcase PS4 title. It would have sold me anyway. Probably thought it was too hard core/niche of a game for that role. Oh well, nothing to be done but play it on PS3. Next time around it will be a current gen title

Or they were so far in development that having to rewrite alot of code to support the newer consoles wasnt worth it. Plus they would have many more devices to support/update
