DC Vault 2

That would imply that they are fine with it as long as they are valid results. The only reason I mention running it by them is because teams have gotten bad names at other projects in the past for having an unfair advantage running optimized apps or modified apps. I just didn't want to see backlash if that were the case. I will have to see how it works on one of my hosts. Thanks for posting. :)

Are you also using an app_info file to keep it from re-downloading the projects version?

Nope, I just overwrote it in the boinc projects directory, If they update the app for some reason, it would be time to recompile it I guess...

Yeah..after I copied it to the project folder and started BOINC, POGS downloaded the server copy again...

I didn't restart boinc, The next new wu that started copied it from the project directory to the slot...
Guess I have to look at app_info before I restart...

Hows this for an app_info file...

Based it on the version from the raspberry pi - OpenCL conversion...

Try it out and let me know. lol I'm not siting at my 64bit PC at the moment to try it myself.

Just attached to Leiden Classical this morning to hopefully make a small push there with smaller systems I've got.

Kai - Did you join the [H]ard|OCP team? I don't see you on the team roster. :)

Guys, for a AMD GPU-supported BOINC project, where do we need the most help? I prefer the Medical field, but I might consider Math or another field. I don't really want to help search for aliens though. ;)

Until POEM gets up and running with the new GPU app I'll join you on some milkyway or primegrid. I've got a GPU that needs some work while its COLD!

I didn't restart boinc, The next new wu that started copied it from the project directory to the slot...

NickOfTime, I noticed Dagorath replied to you in the POGS forums. Be careful with him. He can be very knowledgeable but more commonly a complete jerk. Just don't feed his Troll side. Also, are you seeing 75% speed increase now? Also, did your app_info work?

I most certainly did! I'll be at the bottom with only one or two units finished. It looks like it took my username as my actual username for that pc, I updated it to Jeffy to reflect my other projects.

It's the best way to heat the house!

I'm just going to lurk at skynet_pogs forum for a more official response, but since the opencl stuff was done by a volunteer modorater there, I'm not too worried. Since the compiler is only on a 30day trial, I'm not sure about exe distribution, or if it will continue to work after the trial end. The PGI compiler get 2 week warning everywhere, but the intel compiler was silent.

Speed increase is consistent. I haven't restarted boinc yet, pogs doesn't really write checkpoints but just processes multiple galaxies per wu, defined in the xml.

You can test the exe by making a copy of one of the slots (excluding boinc_lock) and run the new exe there with "fit_sed.exe 1 filters.dat observations.dat" with the 1 being one of the jobs galaxies... That will confirm that intel compiler didn't add any odd dll requirements...

27th place at POGS and we moved up a position in the Physical Sciences category as well.

Well, I found links to the github source in the forums since he was Ok with people compiling it for alternate platforms back in 2012... Looks like they are converting the program to run opencl...

I found one of the links that I was talking about in regards to some projects requesting to not using custom binaries. Though I think POGS is fine with it.

Collatz has released updated applications today that should resolve several issues.

Prime Grid has found a new largest prime ever at 1,074,155 digits long.

Well, I have a few good responses to my suggestion for revising the Vault rules. Rusty even thanked me via PM and sounded like he was all for some big changes. I encourage everyone to take a moment and give their $.02 because it is that input that may reflect the future of the Vault.

http://www.team-ninja.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=54436

If you have a problem registering an account as I did, let me know and I will twist Rusty's ear to see if we can get it resolved. Worst case scenario, shoot me a message or post here so that I could refer your thoughts over.

So we're up to four thoroughbreds running POGS now are we Grandpa? I take it back. Not ponies.

There must be a stud in with those ponies, they seem to be multiplying some how. :D

Soething tells me we are going to hit the 1,000,000 mark or close to it today.

NickOfTime, did you ever get a response from the admins? Also, have you restarted BOINC to see if the project redownloaded the default apps?

No response from Admins, I am getting a wu invalid rate of around 1% so 2 hour processing lost after saving 157hours... I haven't restart boinc yet.

That's an excellent rate considering. And they should be happy that your applications are saving that much compute time. That means more WU's can actually be calculated per day!

Any ideas for next months push? I believe docking and rosetta are our best candidates. POEM is still having compiler problems with the new OpenCL app, so that should be out until that works properly.

I'm all over the board with my home upgrades getting moved around and tweaked. I had considered trying to push a hand full of projects that have lack of work in hopes that all of them together might keep my systems fed. However, I'm not set on anything.

Docking and Rosetta are good options. But I would have to ask the team if they are wanting to stay focused on points at the Vault or possibly just build up our presence in some of the other lower point projects for a month or so. If points are the focus, then continuing with POGS would probably bring us the most points...

I had previously discussed Lieden Classical with a few of you, but the admin really doesn't feel it is important for the user to actually know what they crunch. I'm not going to ask anyone to crunch blindly.

I would also like to point out that once DooKey and Grandpa switch their project focus, we will probably drop in positioning at POGS due to the high interest of some of the larger teams right now. So, whatever we focus on outside of POGS will most likely not offset what is still to come...

Ah, touche. Then it may be best to continue with POGS until a certain position, and then perhaps transition to another project. Also, while crunching CPU only projects, we could position our GPU's onto something that has a high point ratio for those GPU apps. Right now I'm concentrating my GPU horsepower onto Einstein while doing POGS. Thoughts?

Well, some good news. After the recent challenge is over, POGS may slow down a bit. I wasn't aware that we picked POGS at the same time as a challenge.

Hey Guys,
The current POGS challenge is flying along with SETI.USA way out in the lead. Pushing theSkyNet POGS up to a total of 62.76 TFLOPS! Amazing!

I've finally got a prototype of theSkyNet challenge system up and running. Incorporating the feedback I received from users in December. This week and next week I’ll be trialling it alongside the 2 running and upcoming challenges on BOINC Stats. Then after that I will open it up for everyone to create and join challenges.

I’m testing out too new challenge type, Peak RAC and total credit handicapped by number of users.
You can see the new challenges feature at http://www.theskynet.org/challenges

Main features:

Challenges for both teams and individuals
Challenges on a variety of stats including, Total Credit, RAC, change in leader board position and more.
Handicap systems to give the little guys a better shot, including handicap by * RAC and number of members.
Graphing and stats tracking of all challenges.

Planned but not yet implemented features:

Choose which project a challenge runs on.
More options for challenge type and handicap.

It is important that this new feature is actually useful to our members so I will appreciate any and all feedback you guys have.

Cheers
Alex

Well....the real question to decide on is whether or not to be all inclusive or to limit the GPU options.

2.67 VP's/ positionMilkyway supports nVidia & AMD, but no Intel and must have dual precision (currently 59th place)
.17 VP's/position SETI supports all as far as I can tell(currently 217th place)
3.69 VP's/position PrimeGrid supports nVidia & AMD (currently 56th place)
6.85 VP's/position Collatz supports all (currently 53rd place)
.92 VP's/position Einstein supports all (currently 138th place)
12.7 VP's/position Asteroids only supports nVidia (currently 28th place)
8.1 VP's/position GPUGrid only supports nVidia (currently 29th place)

Going by the point list, it would seem that Astrroids would be a good idea for us then. It'll utilize all the hardware we have available (assuming mostly nVidia GPUs here from us) and it gives a good return. CPU workunits are also relatively quick yeah? So with the ions of cores Grandpa, DooKey and the like have, we could potentially do some great damage.

I haven't looked at the amount of work it would take to get to each position, so I'm not sure which would be best. Going over 7 projects and looking at our position, potential position, and the RAC differences to get there while watching what is coming up from behind is a lot of information to digest.

That is why I was asking whether people wanted to focus on points or take a month to work on defense or just work on some other goal...

Ummm Grandpa is already working on some damage on another project, I switched a couple over when I read that the other day we may just see a 300+ point day in the vault in a few days :D

Hey guys, life has gotten really crazy here, so I may lurk a bit to see what next month's push is, and will definitely be crunching along, but right now I'm taking over for a coworker who was in a serious motorcycle accident and will be out until August, AND taking over a non-profit group of about 60 volunteers... Oh, and starting installing the 2,000 SF flooring my wife bought...

So keep crunching, and hopefully I'll be back regularly in about 3 weeks!

Beyond has proposed dropping PSP Proth

The venerable PSP Proth project has been around for a long time but is no longer being used to any extent. It's function was taken over long ago by PrimeGrid and the Vault project link points to a thread that was locked almost nine years ago:

http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=2665

It's large point spread per place makes it very difficult for younger teams to move up in the Vault.

The instructions on the 2nd (and last) post:

"A short and simple guide to using various softwares is available here:-"

points to a dead link.

What's even more telling is that there has been exactly 1 user who has posted results in the last 2 weeks and only 2 users in the last 4 weeks.

Vote anyone? (Rusty likes votes)

Anyone with an opinion on this should post in their forums or if you are unable to, feel free to shoot me a message and I will relay the concerns.

Edit: I will add that PSP is our lowest scoring DC Project, so removal probably won't hurt us and since very few are active there, I doubt we would see additional resources hitting us elsewhere.

Seven days to decide guys. What projects would you like the team to focus on?

I am planning on working on projects that tend to run out of work often and then one project as a backup that has regular work as a way to keep busy. So, I will let you guys decide on the team's focus for March.

Projects I plan on attaching to (I already hit my ABC goal):
Leiden Classical
RNA (this has very tough requirements for RAM and also needs virtualbox)
LHC

As for the backup project, that has yet to be decided. It will always be shared with WCG since I never detach or pause that project.

Ok, updated the fortran version with some optimization found while I was playing with the opencl version...
a step takes about 4m instead of 6m of the prev version, vs 10.5m of the original.

Also included the opencl version, 1m steps vs 4m of original cl version... runs on the first gpu device and you can run 4 or more at a time based on memory bandwidth...

app_info works (current exe names do not match atm) but you can only one client type at a time otherwise it keeps aborting a random project, i tried attaching by using the ip instead of url...

300+ point day? Wow. Its been a while since we have seen those! The first few months of the Vault we would get a few hundred points in a single day once in a while! Go Grandpa!
